Western Antarctic ice sheets have thickened a lot recently. The climate is always changing. The c02 levels follow warming by hundreds of years according to every chart I can find. This is natural. Just like the Chinese reporting little ice in the Arctic Sea in the early 1000's.
Thanks for your analysis of the CO2/temp relationship but you miss much. For example: In the geologic record it does appear that CO2 increases follow temp increases. What you miss is that fact that humans weren't in the equation. Now we are and have become a driver of temps by increasing the GHG levels. As we "unnaturally" increase temps natural CO2 levels will increase. This aggravates the problem.

(CNN) -- Climate-driven environmental changes could drastically affect the distribution of more than 1,000 species of commercial fish and shellfish around the world, scientists say.
For the first time, researchers using computer models have been able to predict the effect that warming oceans, fed by greenhouse-gas emissions, could have on marine biodiversity on a global scale. A new study predicts that by 2050, large numbers of marine species will migrate from tropical seas toward cooler waters at an average rate of t 25 to 28 miles per decade.
These migrations could lead to "numerous extinctions" of marine species outside the Arctic and Antarctic, especially in tropical waters, according to the study's projections.
"These are major impacts that we are going to see within our lifetime and our children's lifetime," said William Cheung, lead author of the study, set to be published this week in the journal Fish and Fisheries.
"Next month, NASA will launch the first satellite designed exclusively to answer questions about the distribution and source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which is largely responsible for global warming. "

2 years ago I went on a cruise through Glacier Bay in Alaska. Most of the travelers, including myself, were saddened by watching the glaciers pop and break off into the ocean. However, I did see a cute video about rubber duckies being used to research global warming. It's saved in my 'favorites' - look for the rubber ducky.

Have a look at the graph at this EPA web site. It shows the temp increase projections with different emission growth scenerios. It looks like a 1.5 to 3.5 degree Celsius increase ON TOP of what has already occurred!
It would certainly be better to be on the lower range of that scale. Too bad we didn't pay attention to what Gore was saying over 30 years ago.

Up here in Alaska millions acres of white spruce forest on the Kenai have been killed by an explosion of spruce bark beetles since '87. Because of climate change, it has spread to about 38 million spruce. Scientists attribute the beetle infestation to rising average temperatures in South-Central Alaska in both winter and summer. More beetle larvae can survive, and higher summer temperatures allow the insects to mature faster and complete a 2yr life cyle in 1yr. Forests have become moonscapes.

WASHINGTON - Carbon dioxide, the chief cause of global warming, cannot be regulated as a pollutant, the Environmental Protection Agency ruled Thursday.
The decision reverses a 1998 Clinton administration position. It means that the Bush administration won't be able to use the Clean Air Act to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from cars.
Had the Bush administration decided that carbon dioxide is a pollutant and harmful, it could have required expensive new pollution controls on new cars and perhaps on power plants, which together are the main sources of so-called greenhouse gases."

There is plenty of Arctic ice left for the polar bears to survive. Polar bears have to travel to thinner ice in order to catch their prey. Unfortunately, many of them die because thin ice is, and always will be, unsafe.
The $2 million is also to be used for a national public relations campaign to promote the findings of the conference.
Critics say it's a waste of state money because all the hard scientific research points in the other direction.
"This truly is the conference to nowhere," said University of Alaska researcher Rick Steiner, who has pressed the Palin administration unsuccessfully for five months to release any scientific backup for its position opposing the federal polar bear listing.
WASHINGTON — "They aren't the normal calamari. But the jumbo squid now lurking off the Pacific Northwest coast could threaten salmon runs and signal yet another change in the oceans brought on by global warming.

Polar bears are dying because of global warming. The U.S. must decide whether to put them on the Endangered Species List by May 15. Google and sign the Center for Biological Diversity's polar bear petition in support of this decision.

That will make it more difficult to stabilise carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere and to reduce the risks of extreme forms of global warming.
OTTAWA - A scientific committee that advises Canada's government on endangered species said Friday that climate change is a threat to the survival of the polar bear, but the species does not face extinction.
The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada determined that the polar bear was a "special concern species" because evidence wasn't strong enough to recommend elevating the polar bear's status to threatened or endangered.
Check out the article written by Stephen Schneider (of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO) in NAture (Vol. 270 22/29 Dec 1977) titled "AGAINST INSTANT BOOKS" where he explains why "instant" books often do more to confuse than elucidate the scientific controversies they discuss... Bryson's work predicting an eminent ice age 30 years ago, which became his end-of-career bellyflop, is discussed.
For a short time during the 1970s, a number of climatologists theorized that the Earth was heading towards an ice-age. Leading this group was Reid Bryson, whose work was the primary inspiration for a number of CIA reports and the book The Weather Conspiracy. At one point, Mr. Bryson wrote that:
"There is very important climatic change going on right now, and it's not
merely something of academic interest." Bryson warned, "It is something that, if it continues, will affect the whole human occupation of the earth -- like a billion people starving. The effects are already showing up in a rather drastic way."
However, this theory was soon abandoned. Bryson recanted his earlier warnings and eventually retired (in 1986, by my calculations). Meanwhile, the above quote became fodder for a million GW Denier websites, evidence that scientists "can't decide whether we face an ice age or warming".
And then, j[in 2007], 87 year old Reid Bryson pops up in the "Wisconsin Energy Cooperative News" , the magazine of the Wisconsin Energy Cooperative, an association of Wisconsin energy producers. In "The Faithful Heretic", he spends a several pages trash-talking the science behind anthropogenic Global Warming, employing most of the standard skeptical talking points.

Western Antarctic ice sheets have thickened a lot recently. The climate is always changing. The c02 levels follow warming by hundreds of years according to every chart I can find. This is natural. Just like the Chinese reporting little ice in the Arctic Sea in the early 1000's.

Thanks for your analysis of the CO2/temp relationship but you miss much. For example: In the geologic record it does appear that CO2 increases follow temp increases. What you miss is that fact that humans weren't in the equation. Now we are and have become a driver of temps by increasing the GHG levels. As we "unnaturally" increase temps natural CO2 levels will increase. This aggravates the problem.

Well, the swiss glaciers are turning into lakes, but CO2 is probably not the main man-made cause. They don't get enough snow anymore. The winters are becoming dryer. I suspect: not enough natural vegetation anymore, just like the Sahara for 2000 years: most of it was still green!

Global warming is indeed a fact. The planet can do one of three things {climate-wise}: warm up; cool down; remain steady. Recently it has become warmer, though not much warmer as we continue to break records in the record cold dept. Warmer weather means more food and a decrease in fuel- demand to heat our buildings.

2 years ago I went on a cruise through Glacier Bay in Alaska. Most of the travelers, including myself, were saddened by watching the glaciers pop and break off into the ocean. However, I did see a cute video about rubber duckies being used to research global warming. It's saved in my 'favorites' - look for the rubber ducky.

Center scientist Mark Serreze said: "Five years ago, to think that we'd even be talking about the possibility of the North Pole melting out in the summer, I would have never thought it".

Absolutely gorgeous film. The warming evident on the glaciers is also occurring in Northwest Alaska. In places like Shishmaref, the whole village is condemned because of loss of permafrost - and rising ocean levels.

Have a look at the graph at this EPA web site. It shows the temp increase projections with different emission growth scenerios. It looks like a 1.5 to 3.5 degree Celsius increase ON TOP of what has already occurred!
It would certainly be better to be on the lower range of that scale. Too bad we didn't pay attention to what Gore was saying over 30 years ago.
We'll have to play the cards we have.

Up here in Alaska millions acres of white spruce forest on the Kenai have been killed by an explosion of spruce bark beetles since '87. Because of climate change, it has spread to about 38 million spruce. Scientists attribute the beetle infestation to rising average temperatures in South-Central Alaska in both winter and summer. More beetle larvae can survive, and higher summer temperatures allow the insects to mature faster and complete a 2yr life cyle in 1yr. Forests have become moonscapes.

City hasn't broken the Fed carbon monoxide limit for almost 15 years due mostly to cleaner cars being on the roads. Can't even stay the course on doing the minimum...

For a short time during the 1970s, a number of climatologists theorized that the Earth was heading towards an ice-age. Leading this group was Reid Bryson, whose work was the primary inspiration for a number of CIA reports and the book The Weather Conspiracy. At one point, Mr. Bryson wrote that:

merely something of academic interest." Bryson warned, "It is something that, if it continues, will affect the whole human occupation of the earth -- like a billion people starving. The effects are already showing up in a rather drastic way."

However, this theory was soon abandoned. Bryson recanted his earlier warnings and eventually retired (in 1986, by my calculations). Meanwhile, the above quote became fodder for a million GW Denier websites, evidence that scientists "can't decide whether we face an ice age or warming".

And then, j[in 2007], 87 year old Reid Bryson pops up in the "Wisconsin Energy Cooperative News" , the magazine of the Wisconsin Energy Cooperative, an association of Wisconsin energy producers. In "The Faithful Heretic", he spends a several pages trash-talking the science behind anthropogenic Global Warming, employing most of the standard skeptical talking points.
And suddenly, the guy once ridiculed for being wrong about Global Cooling has become a prophet for GW Deniers everywhere!

I remember this, Ot is Why the EPA was formed and Emmsion Standard and CFC reduction efforts were done.
Back in the 70's the Suar palnts here would spure black smoke and debrie now they only give off a little ater vapor steam. In the 70's a brown haze covered cities like Hollywood often, last year they had no "smog days".

Pigdemons: You are right about this winter's snowfall around the world. It is going to happen more and more as the planet tries to absorb/dissipate the extra atmospheric energy. Some of these atmospheric models are predicting such weird things as snow in August in the lower 48 states, 90 degree days in central North America in November and December, more tornados, and mega hurricanes/typhoons. It's going to happen even if all the air pollution stops now because of a decades-long-delayed-reaction
