@holybrolydood I say that the Sog is the best knive i have brought or held in my hand with-out a doubt easily i can say that. My 3 Para-Military 2 arrived yesterday and that's just one other knive if you wont to compare i still say the SOG Vulcan VL-01 is better. Deployment is so easy its not funny. Closing this this when it gets almost closed the indent closes its self. Its like a magic trick to watch. The last little bit of closing it really pulls itself closed nicely. Lovely knive all round.
@reefification The Sog VL-01 IS THE STRAIGHT EDGE VG-10 STEEL IN THE BLADE STEEL.
THE SOG VL-03 IS THE TANTO BLADE AND IT HAS 3 DIFFERENT STEEL IN IT WHICH CONSIST OF san mai (VG-10 Core lamenated with 420J2). That's the difference between the two nothing else. The Straight edge is more practical for EDC especially when it comes to cutting most thing. More belly more practical. But the Tanto is not like most Tanto blades its more of a Tactical blade.
Respond to this video.. Read above to see the difference between the two.
To get this knive to open with-out moving or flicking the wrist. Your SOG has to be very loose almost to loose. I will not operate a knive to loose. Because if your knive is to loose and you forget to tighten it and your in a defense situation and all of a sudden the knive blade has something happen to it because its to loose. Your going to be f _ cked. Unless you can handle yourself. You might be in trouble. .
The SOG Vulcan is not an assisted opening knife. It is essentially the equivalent of the Kershaw flipper design in which you start the blade open with the extended tang (protrusion in the back of the knife) then with a little flick of the wrist it comes the rest of the way open. In this case you can just use the thumb stud to open it.
??????????????????no springs exist in most modern assist knives???????its a torsion bar system??????? because spring assisted knives are illegal pretty much everywhere????????? you shouldn't own any knife.............
Supra Tuned nice response but your are wrong. Kershaw uses a torsion bar. Most assisted opening knives use a spring just like a majority of modern automatic knives. The spring in the automatic knives is stronger. And spring assisted kinves are legal to own and carry in any state that allows you to carry a knife. Once again we have someone repeating something they heard and took it as fact. Do a little research before you post. And automatic knives are legal in a lot of states if you have a CCW.
I 've got the VL04 tanto, but why it is not smooth open and close like this. Is it the defect of the knife. Relly hard to open and close with one hand.
Hmm, I think I can remember mine not being all that smooth when I first got it. I'm pretty sure all I did was loosen the pivot screw just a little bit, not too loose, but it will really improve the deployment speed of the blade. You may also want to try putting a little oil on the pivot>
I had this knife a month ago. The handles as you mentioned were disappointing. I ended up trading it for the Tomcat 3.0. The blade was awesome though. The Tomcat has better balance and ergos IMHO. No comparison between the two. If SOG would improve the handles I might consider buying another. It's a beast. I'm really happy with the Tomcat, it's just way easier to handle. Your vids on the Tomcat are cool by the way . Thanks for the vid.
Yeah I would say it's worth it. Its got a really nice and really nice blade steel. The only thing I don't really like about the knife are the Zytel handle scales, they just don't suit the knife. I wish SOG would have used kraton or G10.
Actually I find it slices real well, I've only really sliced mostly cardboard, maybe a few clamshells, but I find with this knife, and with my Tomcat, SOG has done an amazing job with the grind. They've managed to put a really nice hollow grind on it that really is just amazing, especially for a blade this thick. The blade on this knife is definitely the highlight.
Is this knife spring loaded?
Or is it just easy to open and smooth to open?

I prefer non assisted knives because you wouldn't have to worry about springs breaking, etc. :) nice choice. I'm thinking of getting one myself

Thanks! And I agree, the Tomcat has better ergonomics and is just a better knife all around. It just feels a lot nicer

How's the quality of the zytel? I like the Spyderco stuff, but some synthetics are crap.
LordSpyderco 4 years ago
It's pretty good as far as Zytel and FRN go
mrskillz001 4 years ago
How well does it "slice"? I cut a lot of cardboard, plastic clamshell packages, and a bit a food now and then.
