Man, Steve Augeri is a trouper for singing through that song with a bad throat, but I feel really bad for him for having to do so. Neal Schon pushed him way too hard by making him sing night after night even after they found out he was having throat problems (which was about three years before this).

Cool how the drummer covered for him (2:55) then he probably lips "thank you" (3:05) or something as the drummers nods as to say "you're welcome!" That's great onstage chemistry.

He had a lot of self esteem issues regarding being the first to replace Steve Perry. So much angst that he actually lip synced on two songs every show "Separate Ways" and "Don't Stop Believing". Journey used Steve Perry's vocals from the original demos of the songs so it would sound the same but different
I saw Journey twice with Augeri...he was pretty damn good, especially the first time. Sounded just like Perry live. I was very impressed. Not so good here, his voice was going...but at one time he was pretty damn good.

Steve Augeri had a singing "teacher" and did all the things he had to do to keep his pipes as fresh as possible. Let's face it, Steve Perry's vocals are virtually impossible to duplicate over the long haul. I can guarantee you that Steve Perry himself could not duplicate his own songs from the 70s and 80s. Journey's songs are works of art, both musically and lyrically. Why that band is not in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame is beyond comprehension. Augeri brought Journey back from the dead.
yes it does....when schon schedules shows back to back for a solid month. he will never understand what it means to be a singer since he's only a guitar player.
Any one with ears can tell this gentleman has put his voice through a blender singing so loud and high every night. It would have helped if the key could have been lowered down a lot, and if he had an experienced voice teacher to help him save his talented voice. Let me tell you to get up in front of people like that and continue to fight it when the voice has had it is very brave. It was taking so much out of him to sing like that. Wow, the drummer has a voice that don't quit.
Augeri actually did substantially more live shows than Perry. Most were great. His voice just wore out. Perry is still my favorite singer of all time, but I've seen him have bad nights too.
@ElScOtChMan Perry was prepping for the Trial By Fire tour and found out he needed a hip replacement, he needed time to weigh up the options but Neal and Jon were having none of it so he walked away.
This was probably at the end of the tour where ANY lead singer's voice has about had it. I liked Augeri alot, but he didn't have the fullness in his voice of Perry or Arnel.

Ok...wow what a thread....my 2 cents: Journey ROCKS. Journey with Steve Perry = best. Best song vocally Perry = Winds of March. 2nd place = Journey with Arnel. Best vocal = After All These Years. 3rd place = Journey with Augeri. Could have been great. Best vocal = Higher Place (One of my all time Journey fave songs from a guy I put in 3rd place...go figure!) Last place = Journey and Jeff Scott Soto. Best vocal = ooooooooh couldn't find one. Honorable mention = Deen Best Perry impersonator. IMHO

Augeri was a good singer but there is a point in which you cannot hold those notes.. especially if you are singer over your range. Pineda sings more on his range which is similar to Perry's,but Augeri was kind of going over but...he did a good job overall when he was there.
augeris a nice guy and 'was' a great singer at one point......at least in this vid he graciously points to DC who takes the high notes for him and doesnt pretend/mime.....he's cool augeri
Don't get me wrong i like Steve but for some reason todays journey runs theirs singers into the ground! I fact i am getting Steve's new CD! I would take that over any ARNEL songs anyday!
Steve has since recovered and is working on a solo CD and expects to tour in 2010. While he won't get the publicity he got with Journey, he'll be able to do it his way and take care of his voice.
@marc176 Augeri released an album with his old group Tall Stories in late 2009 called: "Skyscraper"...pretty good....don't think it will chart in anyway but a couple of the songs rock and don't sound "Perryesque" at all...
But he was sweet an great with the tempo, latest Perry's concerts they became accelerate, with Augery they were better using the original tempo of the songs, i like Perry but Augery was great too.
Arnel REALLY needs to take care of his voice. Get a good coach to teach him how to use as little effort as necessary and breathe right. He can also sing lower harmonies in some high parts, cut notes shorter. SP wisely did a lot of these things.
These songs would wreck anyone's voice! Even Perry sounded different after 20 years of singing!! But they were ALL good in their day!! Let's appreciate that!! Rock on guys!!!

It amazes me how NS tossed him aside after 10 years like a used tissue. He was so gracious in concert toward the audience and the other band members. I haven't bought a Journey album since Steve was ousted.

Steve Augeri had a singing "teacher" and did all the things he had to do to keep his pipes as fresh as possible. Let's face it, Steve Perry's vocals are virtually impossible to duplicate over the long haul. I can guarantee you that Steve Perry himself could not duplicate his own songs from the 70s and 80s. Journey's songs are works of art, both musically and lyrically. Why that band is not in the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame is beyond comprehension. Augeri brought Journey back from the dead.

Any one with ears can tell this gentleman has put his voice through a blender singing so loud and high every night. It would have helped if the key could have been lowered down a lot, and if he had an experienced voice teacher to help him save his talented voice. Let me tell you to get up in front of people like that and continue to fight it when the voice has had it is very brave. It was taking so much out of him to sing like that. Wow, the drummer has a voice that don't quit.

Augeri actually did substantially more live shows than Perry. Most were great. His voice just wore out. Perry is still my favorite singer of all time, but I've seen him have bad nights too.

This was probably at the end of the tour where ANY lead singer's voice has about had it. I liked Augeri alot, but he didn't have the fullness in his voice of Perry or Arnel.

You can hear Augeri's voice is shot. Sad, he had a chronic throat infection. When he didn't have that, he was amazing. Notice how Deen handled the high note "night". This is sad to listen to, but still better than Arnel anyday. And no, I'm not a racist.

I feel so bad for Steve Augeri! To be able to sing with one of THE greatest bands & then wreck his voice is awful! I'm a die-hard fan, but I really liked "Arrival" & thought he was really good! Hope he's recovered & continues to sing! He's really good!!

Ok...wow what a thread....my 2 cents: Journey ROCKS. Journey with Steve Perry = best. Best song vocally Perry = Winds of March. 2nd place = Journey with Arnel. Best vocal = After All These Years. 3rd place = Journey with Augeri. Could have been great. Best vocal = Higher Place (One of my all time Journey fave songs from a guy I put in 3rd place...go figure!) Last place = Journey and Jeff Scott Soto. Best vocal = ooooooooh couldn't find one. Honorable mention = Deen Best Perry impersonator. IMHO

I think Steve Augeri is the best Steve Perry Journey ever had, better than Steve Perry, Jeff Scott Steve Perry, or Asian Steve Perry. HOWEVER, this is PAINFUL and they made the right decision canning him and getting a fresh voice. Obviously his voice was thrashed.

Augeri was a good singer but there is a point in which you cannot hold those notes.. especially if you are singer over your range. Pineda sings more on his range which is similar to Perry's,but Augeri was kind of going over but...he did a good job overall when he was there.

Steve has since recovered and is working on a solo CD and expects to tour in 2010. While he won't get the publicity he got with Journey, he'll be able to do it his way and take care of his voice.

Arnel REALLY needs to take care of his voice. Get a good coach to teach him how to use as little effort as necessary and breathe right. He can also sing lower harmonies in some high parts, cut notes shorter. SP wisely did a lot of these things.

he didnt always sound like this, he sang to high for his voice, sang when he had bronchitus once, and then had a very bad throat infectionn, and in my opinion he had the greatest voice at one out of any of the journey signers, U should respect him as he sacrificed his career and voice for journey. Luckily his voice is recovering
