Seriously, could you imagine how hard it would be "returned" to your "real" life, after many years, and try to " pick up where u left off"? Like being 70 and returned to high school, and trying to remember everything, in detail
My favorite episode of Star Trek, any series. It sings to my soul. There were almost no special effects. Just a beautiful, timeless story of home, family, and remembrance. This one could have been made into a full length film.
Agreed it should of been 2 part episode..still so many juicy stories left untold. Like the Enterprise visiting this now 1000yr old dead planet. Maybe finding some relics of Picards past life, that to him he had just a short time ago. Or a ship getting Picards 'message' he transmitted out the first few days he was there. Total recall meets Titanic meets TNG... Amazing episode ..why can't there be t.v. writing like this anymore.??
@bfooter902 Well, he was experiencing the memories of someone else, but he was still himself, so while he sent that message in his mind the person who's memories he was simply reliving, didn't.
Every time I see the scene where Picard clasps the flute to his chest and grips it tightly, I cry. While this isn't my favorite episode (Data's Day) it's certainly one of the best the series ever saw. Thanks for this.
Kirk is Kirk. That in itself is great, it fits his Crew and the mold of legendary characters; Arthur and His Knights come to mind. Picard and Crew are, in contrast, more of the modern vision of heroes- frail, humanisitic, and, most important, affected and changed by their experiences. From Farpoint to the Borg to "Darmok" to HERE... Picard is always growing as a cpatain and as a man- as did TNG grow as a series.
TOS is an epic poem or legend; TNG is a symphony or opera- masterpieces both
Yes, this episode and the sequal in season 6 were among the best in that entire series, and yes, I teared up as well. I guess it got to me how those people from that planet long gone did not want to be totally forgotten and were able to make that happen in some small way, and the music was awesome! If anyone wants this song, send me a private note w/ your email and I'll hand over a copy. Anyway, a very powerful show, and no, there's nothing even close to this on TV anymore, or movies as well.
I resent that! TNG revived the trek series - without it Trek would have died with the TOS and the new Trek vids and movies never would have happened! A lot of STNG stories were good
Its damn true - everyone praises the new Star Trek movie but it NEVER would have happened without Voyager, Deep Space Nine or The Next Generation. I agree that Enterprise killed the series but the other three series revived it and kept it alive
And a lot of them DEFINED the genre and series in ways that are reflected even in the new movie! No TNG bashing - it deserves respect
Agreed. I love TOS, it is my favorite, but TNG was the gem of it all, the best polished and the best developed. True, it took a downturn when Rick Berman took command of the franchise, but it still is perhaps one of the best embodiments of the Star Trek spirit.
fantastic and very moving episode thanks to get directorship and a great actor. Patrick Stewart is one of the very few things that makes me proud to be english
@matrix128500 Dood, you guys put Darwin on your money...you guys are pretty awesome in my book. We get dead presidents and 'in god we trust'. Us americans suck
No, I won't cry, I wont... Wow, this song is amazing. It very well written, and it makes me tear up every time I hear it. The clips were matched wonderfully to the music, great job.
No, no, I refuse to cry damn you! This song and the entire episode got a ton of Emmys. Also can you believe that none of it was shot on location. It was all shot in studio. Richard D. James, the Production Designer at the time is a master of studio lighting.
If you guys wanna hear this further, it's done AGAIN in an episode from season 6 called "Lessons". Where the woman he could fall in love with and he are doing a musical improv.
What an amazing and beautiful tune, I always loved the tune from when I first saw this episode, but I've never heard this full version so thank you for posting it. Hope you don't mind but I've downloaded this to my phone :)
Well, how much I got it, I think the probe just tap into his mind sending "images" into his head like somekind of telepathy, because his body stayed the whole time on the Enterprise and in his 24. century...
No problem.. but I'm not sure if that's 100% true... because it was a long time when I watched this episode, but I'm sure that all Picard's life which he lived on that planet, was in fact memories of the real man named Kamin who lived by that time.
This was a wonderful episode. Based on my understanding Kamin was a real person who lived on that planet..Thats why they left the flute in the probe..they knew whoever the probe found..would learn to play and appreciate Kamins flute. It makes it all the more emotional and deep that all he is left with is the flute he learned to play.
That's why he was so sad when the probe finished scanning him. He lives a lifetime in the span of one episode and all he has left of the life was the flute he learned to play.
My sis expects me to play this song at her wedding but I only have a penny whistle which doesn't even come close to that sound. I've got 3 months or so to learn it but I gotta find that type of flute first. Anyone know what might be the closest?
The closest instrument is a Sopranino Recorder, in my experience...tho, the ressikan (sp?) flute Picard has in his hands is apparantly straight bored like a tin whistle!...And, I've played it on both the recorder and the whistle to good effect...Best of Luck!
It is a tin whistle. In the special features for this season of the Next Generation, the musical director or the show speaks about their difficulty in finding an appropriate instrument and finally deciding on the Tin Whistle.
Oh, and fun fact: Patrick Stewart did actually learn how to play the tin flute for this episode (and the later episode "Lessons"). All performances you see/hear he is playing :D
my favorite episode. to live a life seperated from yours in moments and to have to keep those memories when you return to your own life. a hard thing.
It was one of the best episodes. Really showed Patrick Stewart's skill. Such an amazing and convincing actor. He made TNG what it was. (And yea, I give credit to the rest of the bridge crew too, but c'mon! Jean-Luc was the man!)
The best episode of TNG and rightly so. Picard should've been more determined after this episode to have a family of his own or connect more deeply with his crew (which, sadly, didn't happen until the last episode).
And instead of making 3 of the 4 films involve big budget explosions and other worthless crap they should've explored the relationships between this remarkable group of people, so much was wasted it brings a tear to my eye.
You missed the episode with Q. Picard can't be a father and a captain at the same time. This episode was the closest he'd ever be to that. That means something and was very special to him.
Where did you get the soundtrack from? I don't recall seeing the full length song in the episode nor do I ever see any original sound track CD on sale. heh Please tell me where you got it!!!!!!! It's such a beautiful song.
must find the bastard you unliked, and let worf have his way.

This episode struck a chord in my soul, to this day... i was lost in that episode, when it was over, its like i came out of a coma!
I dont see how anyone, fan of the show or not...couldnt be put in a state of awe from viewing this episode.
It was brilliant, it still is...and to think one could capture an audience like that, WITH commercials.
