@InitialDirt That's one unfounded opinion, if a gearbox isn't used right or maintained, it'll fail. The Hoku Racing Factory demo car (that started all this off) ran over 400ps on the stock gearbox and that never failed

You're completely missing the point and each post you make shows this...put the stig in the R34 and then in the EP82, the EP would win every time. My track EP82 torque steers a lot, but it's all part of the FF fun. Power to weight is what gives these cars the edge when you up the power. Mine with just 203atw leaves a good friends 380hp R32 GTR from a standing start ;)
If you check my other videos (Project EP82) you'll see I'm building a similar machine from an EP82 base. More track focused though. My EP (I chose it because it's cheap to tune and run...I could have bought any car in reality, within reason) weighs 750kg and currently puts out 203hp atw, all at 1.2 bar. I had to call it a day as the 410cc injectors were running at 98%, need a set of 550cc to continue ;)

I have this video with english subtitles and english commentary. The reason the starlet looses the drag race is because it broke the transmission. They also say that it cost 20k dollars to modify the starlet that way. On the long straight away it reached 180mph too.

Fi, we are talking street cars which you've been driving what, 2 or 3 years? I've been building and racing machines before you were conceived; I'm 45. What are you going to teach me about a car that when it was in production, you still couldn't drive! Have you ever driven either, stock or modified? 1st. if the R-34 was such a piece of work then it would still be in production making Nissan money. The car industry is a business and the R-34 was basically losing money. Hence, it's quick demise.
At 19 the project that you are undertaking will be a good stepping stone for greater things 10 years from now when you will start to really be good at it. Nobody is good at this sort of thing at the beginning, even though we all thought that we were good at 20. Only now that my friends and I are in our 40's do we NOW realize how uninformed, narrow-minded and just flat ignorant to engine building & racing we were. And when we have a beer and reminisce about the old days, we laugh, we laugh alot.
Many sports cars do not make money. They are halo cars that bring prestige to the company. Nissan must think there is something to it as they are bringing back the GT-R next year, and to America no less.
The R34 certainly was a piece of work, it set a new record for the Nürburgring Nordschleife (7:54), and continues to hold 50th place 8 years later.
I've heard the hype, but I don't believe it yet. Because a Japanese version always comes out before it gets exported. I haven't seen it here in Japan. The 2008 models will be hitting the floor in about 2 months, but there isn't any type of advertizing at all here for the GTR. Nissan is just dong too good at this time, The CEO (a new one from Brazil) just pulled the company out of a $1Billion per year slide into read ink (losing money).
Last year, Only the CEO's third (or second). Nissan made a billion. I don't see this CEO that stupid to take a good business strategy and go back to a bad one. The Z is doing real well making Nissan big bucks.... Why go back to a loser (in money)
Lastly, and very importantly, The Skyline is not a great car stock. It's bad in every way, except styling, and it's ability to be easily modified to a much greater performance standard. Once modified, it can be a great car. But once again.... That's not what's on the showroom floor.
Like I said, I'll believe it when it hits the showroom floor. Not tht I don't want competition. I'd love it. The the GTR, once imported, will be 100k (in the R-34 form). And a stock r-34 is absolutely no competition for a 911TT which is the same price range. So Nissan will either have to (make a better car) up the cost on the car, which will up the price by a lot, or (tune down the car, Like the Z) lower the cost on the car, which will bring the price down alot.
Nissan can't win a product war against BMW, Porsche, or Mercedes. Because what most young people don't understand is when you start to make enough money to be able to afford these cars FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR, the car is rarely bought for performance. It's bought for the moniker (prestige). It boils down to when I just picked up a fine lady and I tell her to wait at the door, I'll be driving up the car in a minute. I'd rather impress her with the porsche 911 than the Nissan Anything.
It's the reason the RX-7, Supra, 300ZX all failed. At the end, they were $40k cars (that's about $50k in today's standards). Too much for the youngster that wants them, & wrong monikers for the people that can afford them. Those Japanese Sports cars were in the wrong price range. What did Japanese automakers do, they tuned down the cars. rx-8 and Z are under $30K (the Z is about the same power rating, but without turbo. They are doing it the American way, more cubes). Makers R now cleaning up.
what they did not fail the 300zx was sold around the world and made huge sales in the us the supra was beaten by the mr2 and the rx7 was a hit in japan. A new z is around 40k iut the door and the rx is 35k the new rx7( yes a new rx7) supra and skyline will cost well over the old 300zx price and they will sell like hotcakes
Look at the sales figures. 300's, 7's, supra, MR2's were not going out the door back in the early nineties. I sold for Toyota back then. 1 Supra left our dealership in a year (and we had a big dealership)! They were not going out the door.
Here in Japan the Z starts at about $25K up to about $35K depending on the type. The RX-8 starts at $20k and goes to a high $2somethingK. And I'm still right. $40k almost years ago is = to 50 somethingK now. And very few would spend that much cash on a car with that little performance. Lastly when the 7, GTR, and supra hit the showroom floor, then type... Until then, IT'S ALL TALK.
There are so many lessons here I don't know which one to start on. However, now everybody sees the truth about tuning here in Japan. $DOLLARS (yen actually)$. Ol' boy drops 10 grand into a four banger. For maybe 250 total horses. 10 grand in a real engine and you get way over a 1000 horses.That's lesson #1
Lesson #2, when you put too many horses into a car that wasn't mean for it or it wasn't upgraded. Sh!T breaks, and yes 250 is way too much for that cars stock tranny. It comes stock with probably less than 100. Lesson #3 - Being light is more important than horses almost always. 250 horses at 2000 pounds is way better than 350 horses at 3500 pounds (which that skyline weighs all day long). Notice the centrifical force pull the skyline out of the turn and the light scarlet go right underneath it.
Part B concerning that fat a$s Skyline. In a drag, unless they are highly modified (over 650HP), they are just too damn heavy. I eat them for lunch almost always in my RX-7. Why? Cause I'm 2700 pounds and skylines (especially 33's) are at least 3500 (except the 32's, they are the best one to drag). Lesson - weight is a drag.
Lesson #3, All or 4 wheel drive is nice for beginners or a car that has a fairly stock suspension, but it's extra weight for a pro with a well set up car (you need both, pro and well set up car). The extra weight that it takes to give the skyline AWD adds alot of heavy extra weight that hurts performance as explained in my previous lessons. If AWD was so great all serious race cars would have it, but only the rally cars do (For obvious reasons).
Lastly, Skylines aren't all that. I've owned one ('74 Skyline Ken-mary). Wish I still had it for collectors purposes. If they were/are such a great car, they'd be exported worldwide. They aren't/weren't, and will never be. Now the fact is that all Japanese car are starting to go N/A like American cars. Except for the evo and sti, there is no more extra easy 100-200 horses; better get'em quick. If you want to buy a turbine kit $ $ $, it's better to put it on a 7 or 8 liter than a 3 or 3.5 liter.
i guess thats why the skyline got banned from a lot of different classes...you know, from its lacking ability to be a race car with 4wd. even though it dominated.
Well, as anybody who races knows...... what's on the track is NOTHING like what we drive on the road. The only thing that is the same is the moniker. It's a lousy car for street action unless it's been highly modified. BTW, they banned rotorys engines as well. Especially after the Mazda cleaned house at 24 hours at LeMans, embarrassing the Porsches, BM's, and all of Europe's best.
But just because the racing rotory was great on the track doesn't mean that it would be ok for the road. In fact, that particular engine wouldn't last but a few days (maybe) as a daily driver. The engine would never pass emissions and the car itself would fail all kinds of regulations. Not to mention that the sheetmetal interior with only 1 bucket seat, steering wheel, and a few guages as amenities would suck.
was embarrassing for the R34. but the EP82 had to be seriously modified to keep up. but on the track it gained a large lead. but overall, the GTR rules. the point was well-made though, about tuning.

Lastly, and very importantly, The Skyline is not a great car stock. It's bad in every way, except styling, and it's ability to be easily modified to a much greater performance standard. Once modified, it can be a great car. But once again.... That's not what's on the showroom floor.

Like I said, I'll believe it when it hits the showroom floor. Not tht I don't want competition. I'd love it. The the GTR, once imported, will be 100k (in the R-34 form). And a stock r-34 is absolutely no competition for a 911TT which is the same price range. So Nissan will either have to (make a better car) up the cost on the car, which will up the price by a lot, or (tune down the car, Like the Z) lower the cost on the car, which will bring the price down alot.

Nissan can't win a product war against BMW, Porsche, or Mercedes. Because what most young people don't understand is when you start to make enough money to be able to afford these cars FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR, the car is rarely bought for performance. It's bought for the moniker (prestige). It boils down to when I just picked up a fine lady and I tell her to wait at the door, I'll be driving up the car in a minute. I'd rather impress her with the porsche 911 than the Nissan Anything.

It's the reason the RX-7, Supra, 300ZX all failed. At the end, they were $40k cars (that's about $50k in today's standards). Too much for the youngster that wants them, & wrong monikers for the people that can afford them. Those Japanese Sports cars were in the wrong price range. What did Japanese automakers do, they tuned down the cars. rx-8 and Z are under $30K (the Z is about the same power rating, but without turbo. They are doing it the American way, more cubes). Makers R now cleaning up.

what they did not fail the 300zx was sold around the world and made huge sales in the us the supra was beaten by the mr2 and the rx7 was a hit in japan. A new z is around 40k iut the door and the rx is 35k the new rx7( yes a new rx7) supra and skyline will cost well over the old 300zx price and they will sell like hotcakes

Look at the sales figures. 300's, 7's, supra, MR2's were not going out the door back in the early nineties. I sold for Toyota back then. 1 Supra left our dealership in a year (and we had a big dealership)! They were not going out the door.

Here in Japan the Z starts at about $25K up to about $35K depending on the type. The RX-8 starts at $20k and goes to a high $2somethingK. And I'm still right. $40k almost years ago is = to 50 somethingK now. And very few would spend that much cash on a car with that little performance. Lastly when the 7, GTR, and supra hit the showroom floor, then type... Until then, IT'S ALL TALK.

There are so many lessons here I don't know which one to start on. However, now everybody sees the truth about tuning here in Japan. $DOLLARS (yen actually)$. Ol' boy drops 10 grand into a four banger. For maybe 250 total horses. 10 grand in a real engine and you get way over a 1000 horses.That's lesson #1

Lesson #2, when you put too many horses into a car that wasn't mean for it or it wasn't upgraded. Sh!T breaks, and yes 250 is way too much for that cars stock tranny. It comes stock with probably less than 100. Lesson #3 - Being light is more important than horses almost always. 250 horses at 2000 pounds is way better than 350 horses at 3500 pounds (which that skyline weighs all day long). Notice the centrifical force pull the skyline out of the turn and the light scarlet go right underneath it.

Part B concerning that fat a$s Skyline. In a drag, unless they are highly modified (over 650HP), they are just too damn heavy. I eat them for lunch almost always in my RX-7. Why? Cause I'm 2700 pounds and skylines (especially 33's) are at least 3500 (except the 32's, they are the best one to drag). Lesson - weight is a drag.

Lesson #3, All or 4 wheel drive is nice for beginners or a car that has a fairly stock suspension, but it's extra weight for a pro with a well set up car (you need both, pro and well set up car). The extra weight that it takes to give the skyline AWD adds alot of heavy extra weight that hurts performance as explained in my previous lessons. If AWD was so great all serious race cars would have it, but only the rally cars do (For obvious reasons).

Lastly, Skylines aren't all that. I've owned one ('74 Skyline Ken-mary). Wish I still had it for collectors purposes. If they were/are such a great car, they'd be exported worldwide. They aren't/weren't, and will never be. Now the fact is that all Japanese car are starting to go N/A like American cars. Except for the evo and sti, there is no more extra easy 100-200 horses; better get'em quick. If you want to buy a turbine kit $ $ $, it's better to put it on a 7 or 8 liter than a 3 or 3.5 liter.

Well, as anybody who races knows...... what's on the track is NOTHING like what we drive on the road. The only thing that is the same is the moniker. It's a lousy car for street action unless it's been highly modified. BTW, they banned rotorys engines as well. Especially after the Mazda cleaned house at 24 hours at LeMans, embarrassing the Porsches, BM's, and all of Europe's best.

But just because the racing rotory was great on the track doesn't mean that it would be ok for the road. In fact, that particular engine wouldn't last but a few days (maybe) as a daily driver. The engine would never pass emissions and the car itself would fail all kinds of regulations. Not to mention that the sheetmetal interior with only 1 bucket seat, steering wheel, and a few guages as amenities would suck.
