  • Movement is ok. But keep your glove up.

  • Nice video! I highly doubt there are too many 38 year old goaltenders that can move as well as you.

  • Your hip rotation is good recovering from butterfly just a little more speed, you dont have much wasted movement but i think from the sound of your skate your hollow is to too deep, you are big guy try cutting your skates at 1 inch or 3/4 that will help with lattetal movement and you can still grab a edge while down. Maybe work on stick gap while down or try shorter paddel and glove a little more tilted up not so much face down. You look alot better than adults I've coached. Keep it up good job!

  • @cesarruiz38 I've thought about trying a shorter stick, but I don't have too many righties around to borrow one from. I used to have a 1" hollow on my skates. After a lot of experimentation, I eventually settled on a 3/8" cut. Seemed to work best for pushing off. Then I got the new Bauer's with the thinner stainless and went to a 5/16. I think most of the noise you hear is the stainless. I really don't like the steel as much as my old Grafs.

  • pads are strapped wayyy too tight around the top

  • You need to work with your speed. Your moving seems like really really slow, and your butterfly is weird somehow. Also, your glove is wrong. But good video, keep it up.

  • @Sabatek11 Yeah, agreed. This video certainly isn't my best, either. The weird butterfly is from poor flexibility. It's the #1 thing that's keeping me from getting better. And it takes sooooo long to improve that when you're 38.

  • @goaliejoewi actually, maybe just loosen up your pads a bit and they will be more flush with the ice

  • Please respond to this. I wanna get all white vaughns too. but i see there is a difference in the whites in your pads. does that always happen?

  • @iTZzShaDyy Those I belive are White Jenpro (leather) with White Weave. The weave is that shiny brighter white. The Jenpro with time and puck marks gets a little more off white with time.

  • @cesarruiz38 Thanks, Im just gonna get the vintage. No problems there

  • @iTZzShaDyy There are two different whites by design. The pattern/stripes are "white weave" according to Vaughn. Just something to make them not quite so all-white.

  • Hey Joe do you remember where youy got your pads? they are sick. i have the new Bauer Reflex RX6 LE's. but would love to know where did you buy yours

  • @leftfield4 I ordered them from my local shop. First piece of equipment with my name sewn in them. It took FOREVER to get them, but I'm pretty happy. Of course, they don't look anywhere near as good now. :)

  • @goaliejoewi o wow thats sweet im jealous bro. learned alot from your videos man keep em comin

  • Your skating is really good! I just started playing goalie about 6 months ago and i find i am having trouble with the butterfly slides how do you do them so well and nice pads!

  • @DarkusCollectoroid Thanks man! I had the pads for about a week when this was shot. They're much more beat up now. :) I don't think my skating's all that, but it's getting better. Best thing I figured out was wearing my pads at open skate. Find someplace and just start working on slides and t-pushes and all the rest till your legs fall off. Then lather, rinse, repeat!

  • @goaliejoewi Great im going out to play soon so i will try my best! I have vaughn epics which are really beat up to :D

  • Only issue is the glove, should be pushed out more and not facing the ice

  • dont lift ur foot while moving and loosen ur pads higher up on the pad ur getting a terrible v in the butterfly

  • I have the same stick and im 12

  • @goaliejoewi force them on the ice be the boss!!! :)

  • I'm a '74. So that makes me 38 as of now. I started ice skating when I was 34, and picked up goaltending about six months after that. Filming is a double edged sword. On the one hand, you really get to see the things you should work on. But it also demonstrated the gap between what I imagined I was doing and what I actually am. Doh!

  • random question how old are you? cuz i watched that video from like march 2010 and then your new ones in September and your good..ive thought about filming my coaching sessions too and see my mistakes

  • it takes guts to go out and practice as beginning goalie. Its pretty hard not to look like a fool, so many technicalities it is impossible to look anything near a pro, even after months of practice, Whenever a new goalie goes out to a rink whether it be on their own, stick time, pick up, etc. I give mad props to dudes like this who go out, not afraid of what anyone thinks, and work on their game, because they love it. Props bro.

  • @regginnolemretaw Thanks man! I appreciate it. There's a lot of learning left to do! :)

  • dont pick ur foot off the ice when t-pushing

  • @lolwolves19 Agreed! Now to convince my legs of this...

  • @goaliejoewi Muscle memory, you do enough times it becomes second nature so its important that you dont cheat and learn to do it correctly. Perfect practice makes perfect. It takes many thousands of repititons to train a muscle stay committed buddy!

  • @cesarruiz38 Thanks for the kind words. I've got a long ways to go, but I'm having a lot of fun getting there.

  • try loosing the thigh guard at the top, also helps with a good butterfly.

  • ya get that glove facing out and higher

  • U need 2 work on ur butterfly.

  • why are you lifting your leg on the t push? absolute no need for it

  • Joe you rock !!!

  • LOL :DD

  • Keep in mind when I shot this video, my pads were still pretty new. They didn't move quite the way I wanted. The bigger issue here, besides my glove, is my hips keep moving up and/or back when they're not supposed to. Ah well, that's why I'm out practicing with a camera facing me. :)

  • Yes you can move better with looser pads. Just not too loose or too tight you have to find what works for you.

  • glove is wrong..out more..and should be facing outward not on the ice

  • I think your pads are too tight because they dont go into a perfect butterfly. Are they really tight at the top?
