@BeerGeekNation Where in PA can you get the Alesmith? I picked up a bottle of the Union and Double Jack in Hunt Valley, MD last Friday. Once I try the Double Jack...I want to try the Heady Topper and Alesmith.
Have not had Pliny, but just drank this tonight, and by the gods it was delicious, so well balanced, a new favorite for sure, wish I bought a few more bottles :p
@BeerGeekNation I will agree. I get my Pliney at the same place I get my Double Jack, and I have to say Double Jack is just as good if not better and always available with no purchase limits. I think Pliney is good, but it has been surpassed by other brewers. The exclusiveness though keeps it so desirable.
@BeerGeekNation +1 I never thought I'd find a better IPA than Pliny, but then my buddy was talking this stuff up once and I was able to get a bottle last Friday in Hunt Valley, MD. Im drinking it right now and think Pliny met its match. This stuff is insane. In a perfect world, I could drink this every day for the rest of my life.
@BeerGeekNation Agreed. My other buddy said that this stuff was comparable to Hopslam, but this stuff blew Hopslam away IMO. I still love Hopslam, but my favorite doubles now go....FW DJ, PTE, Hopslam, and Ruination. However, that might change as I am making my way out in a few minutes to get a bottle of Avery the Maharaja.
How can I train my palate? I drank the double Jack along side your review, and my first sip (before your review) I thought "I like this beer, it tastes good". Then, while drinking it along with your tasting notes, I could really find all of the exotic flavors which you described. After hearing you describe them I could easily pick them out. I would like to come up with those great descriptors on my own.
@Dactat Their is a great book I recommend called The Brewmasters Table by Garret Oliver. He is actually the brewmaster for Brooklyn Brewing. It really gives a great detail on each variety of hop, beer style and what should be there. I would also reccomend looking at the BJCP guidelines. just Google BJCP and it will come up. Hope that helps!
Firestone Walker just started distributing to the Philly area and i couldn't be happier. Got a few of these along with their abacus and reserve porter. So far i've only tried the Double Jack and it's friggin awesome!!!
Nice review! Just tried this beer last night. This is a really amazing IIPA. I agree with you this is one of those beers that can be top tier of the IIPA's. Great smell even better taste.
@BeerGeekNation wow this is a first time run? Yea really good stuff. I was not expecting it to be this good. Was bummed i only got one bottle after i was done yesterday lol. Hey my buddy milo714sa on youtube and milohop on BA says he has some Bootlegger's knuckle sandwhich for you. Telling you this beer will be the next PTY . Prediction .
I had this on tap over the weekend (not available yet bottled -or any other Firestone Walker beer for that matter - in my neck of the woods) not knowing anything about it or the brewery. I was blown away by it, probably my second favorite double IPA after Hopslam. I wish I could buy this at the store.
By the way, I got to try the HopSlam last weekend in a mini keg like the one you have behind you. So awesome. I definitely like it better than last year's.
Good review, dead on. Best IPA in my opinion although I have not had Alesmith..

Just really well brewed DIPA. So smooth and drinkable for almost 10% and a great balance of ingredients.

WHaaaaaaaat, you got this already!? Damn, boy. I just got it yesterday to review, lol.
I didn't want to watch this before drinking it, but I couldn't help to find out what it's like, haha.
If it's that grapefruity, how does it compared to Pliny?
BeerichiTuba 1 year ago
Great review, a little too sweet for my taste. Still a damn good beer I gave it an A-
it really did have a ton of fresh hop character.
Tantrum777 1 year ago
@Tantrum777 I didnt think it was nearly as sweet as Hopslam, thought it had a really nice balance.
