Barry is the greates college player ever.. period. probaley the best in th nfl too. in 1988 barry ran for 2,628 yards and 38 touchdowns.. thats not counting the bowl game cuz they didnt count them back then. he had five td's in the bowl game and another 200+ yards. none will ever beat him
Just imagine if Barry played for as long as Emmitt did, on a good team or not, NOONE would ever touch the NFL Career Rushing yards record. It took Emmitt over 3 seasons after Barry stopped playing to pass Barry on the All-Time Rushing list, and another few seasons to claim the title.
Anyone notice all the extravagant showboating and overzealous celebrating in the end zone? It makes you want to say to him just give the ball to the ref and make room for the extra point team already dude.
Sanders had 39 touchdowns in his heisman season of 1988, he then had 5 touchdowns in his bowl game you are right...but they didn't count bowl game touchdowns back then. I'm saying Ball needs 2 more touchdowns to tie and 3 to break, i guess i was wrong. But he is technically beating his record. Im not making a statement that Ball is better than Sanders. There is no way in hell. Sanders is the greatest running back of all time. Im just saying ball will break the record.
@MrGoowon "There is no way in hell Sanders is the greatest running back of all time"???? Really? Tell that to every highlight reel ever made involving all running backs and tell that to ESPN who loves to list him as #1. And again, NO, Ball will not be breaking a record. I don't care what people want to count or not. Barry scored more TD's than Ball in the reg season and soon to be bowl season—that is just factual data, you can't argue it.
@MrGoowon You really think there's no way in hell Sanders is the greatest RB of all time? I can't say he for sure is, but I can't really imagine saying he for sure isn't. It's certainly up for debate between him, Payton, and Brown, right?
@MrGoowon If Montee Ball breaks Barry's TD record, it will be in 14 games vs Barry's 11 games. They don't count Barry's bowl game where he scored 5 TD's in 3 quarters, so its not really "legit" in my opinion.
@g6iii Montee Ball only needs 1 touchdown to tie his record and 2 touchdowns to break it. Hes averaging over 4 touchdowns a game. And with Oregon's defense, I think he will get it.
@MrGoowon Barry had 44 TD that season—Montee breaking his record is based on a new rule allegedly designed to "break records". Common sense tells us that no record is being broken at all. (Unless Montee of course scores six TD's on Oregon and sits out the 4th quarter like Barry did, haha).
Scores a touchdown...hands the ball to the ref...goes over to the sidelines.

Sanders led the nation by averaging 7.6 yards per carry and over 200 yards per game, including rushing for over 300 yards in four games. He set college football season records with 2,628 yards rushing, 3,248 total yards, 234 points, 39 touchdowns, of which 37 were rushing (also a record), 5 consecutive 200 yard games, scored at least 2 touchdowns in 11 consecutive games, and 9 times he scored at least 3 touchdowns. That's what happens when Barry gets a good O-line.

Greatest running back i've had the pleasure of watching, hands down! if jerk off bobby ross would have given him the ball in the first two games he would have had the most rushing yards in colege and pro, sorry eric dickerson.
I coached pee wee football with a guy that played back up saftey with Barry Sanders. lol He said that the hardest hit he ever laid on a guy was Barry Sanders and when he got up Barry was still running. lol But he also said that Barry would drive around in brand new cars.
Look. My favorite running with out a shadow of a doubt is Walter Payton. I cried like a little baby when he died . He IS the reason I played HS football. That being said, I think we all know that if Mr. Sanders had not retired when he did, that he would be the NFL's all time leading rusher and NO ONE would ever, ever, ever, ever beat his mark. Period. Just think if he had Emmit Smith's line..... enough said.
say what you want... barry sanders was a great back dont get me wrong, but emmitt smith was still the #1 prospect at the time... i agree barry was better but again... emmitt is the one with the ALL TIME NFL RUSHING RECORD. bold...
They should have had Barry play the part as Forrest Gump " I just kept running and running and running" This guy was a Beast on the field! He damn sure didnt have a defense when he played for Detroit... but still managed to do what he did.. AMAZING!
And on top of all the AMAZING things he did on the field, the thing I admire the most is he wasn't a shit-talking punk-ass ni99er. He played ball and didn't have to talk shit.

@longview1987 And He was 3rd over all. If the Cowboys got him then he would win a super bowl and retires as an all-time leading rusher. But then Emmitt wouldn't be in Dallas, which means Lions get Troy and Emmitt (to make up for Barry) and possibly have a great offense and maybe win a super bowl. But for Dallas to win a super bowl that would mean that they would need a good QB, and Barry wouldn't get as many carries because he's not the only weapon in Big D, but then.......... MY HEAD HURTS NOW!
@longview1987 I will never forgive the Detroit Lions for ruining his NFL career. Yeah Barry made a Hall of Fame career anyway, and cemented himself as the GOAT RB in a lot of people's minds.....but still, he should have received a better team than the freaking pathetic Lions.
He would have smashed every record imaginable.....he ALMOST did it anyway with the pathetic Lions teams he had, but retired early cause he was tried of losing and the Lions owner refused to trade him.
His 1988 stats are something that you can have from video game. just set the difficulty level at freshman and make the character with all 99.. then you can have his 1988 stats.
the thing that set barry apart from anyone else was how humble he was on and off the field. He never celebrated after a touchdown, or mouthed off to coaches or players, he was just one of the humblest guys you could ever meet, and i respect him for that.
Most Tebow fanatics are just blind.. UF is their only world and savior... Tebow was a good college player, as were tons of other players who never made it in the NFL (Blair Thomas???), and was overhyped by all his face time on TV with his boy scout attitude... personally he seems like a good guy and means well, but I guarantee u all non UF people dont like him one bit.. Barry was special... Tebow is NOT SPECIAL... oh YEA!!!
@puffybutrbiscts excellent point, I never thought of that. Also, back then the bowl games didnt count towards his stats. He would've had like 2,900 yards had the yards in the bowl game counted.
@chreesjumbo .. you mean if he didnt quit in his prime or maybe you meant if he played for 15 years like emmit instead of 10.. but you are right if he ran behind that cowboys O line back then they would have had to change the rules or something cause it would be not fair...... he would still be running
@puffybutrbiscts I cant say i disagree with you at all man, but I dont think we will ever see a player accomplish 23 rushing TD's and 32 passing TD's in a single season again....its pretty remarkable.
@puffybutrbiscts hahahahahaha you my friend are the ignorant fool, I am a fan of THE Ohio State University and am in no way a Gator fan, however I am not an idiot, Keven Smith had a fantastic year but also played in a weak Conference-USA (although UCF gave Texas a scare that year lol) Tim Tebow did what he did week in and week out in a strong SEC, if anyone would of won the Heisman that year it would of been Dennis Dixon if he had stayed healthy, btw Tebows 55 total Tds that year stump Smiths 30
I was @ the Iowa State vs. OSU game in 88 when Barry Sanders crushed my beloved Cyclones. I was 11 years old and that man dominated. To even mention Tim Teblow in the same sentence is the stupidist thing I have ever heard. Go back to you Florida trailer park and actually graduate from college...
how can Experts say Tim Tebow is better. when you say the greatest NCAA player, your talking about individual skill not NC's im sorry for gator fans. Tebow was great but he doesn't even deserve to be in the same sentence as Barry in terms of individual talent. Maybe O.J, Herschel walker, Bo Jackson and Earl can.
When Sanders actually had an offensive line to run behind, immagine if he was drafted by a good NFL team with a line that actually could open up some lanes for him, he would probably have had a season with over 3000 yards rushing.
Open up two browser pages and watch Barry Sr and Barry Jr side by side you tube videos. The kid is exactly like his dad! I just hope he decide to go to the Pokes.
Im going to be as good as barry sanders. Watch me in highschool nxt year freshman at ashwaubenon jaguars a guy said if i keep my work up he will get me a scholarship
for barry sanders 1988 was the best individual performace for one year for any running back in the history of college football. unbelieveable what he accomplished. he even ran a couple special teams kickoffs for td's. without a shadow of a doubt, he is the most elusive running back in the history of mankind including high school college and nfl. no one even comes close.
wow i knew he was fast but damn. this just shows u how much he had to adjust to the well u know. it hurts to say the lions cause i laugh every time i hear them. he was the best thing the lions ever had. The organization especially the (COACH and OWNED) treated him like garbage.
Over 2600 yards rushing. Over 3200 total yards. 39 TDs (37 rushing). 7.6 ypc. Over 200 yards avg per game. 5 consecutive 200+ yrd games. 2 TDs in 11 consecutive. Ran for 222 yrds and 5 TDs in the Holiday Bowl....in 3 quarters bcuz he sat the bench in the 4th quarter. It was the Best Season in college football history and will never be matched. Tim Tebow is faaaaar from as good as Barry.

imagine if barry sanders went to a better team of his era. maybe the steelers, who's offense was good but left room for improvement in the running game. every finger that team had would have a ring on it.
@dallas5sb Emmitt's best season at Florida was 1,599 yds rushing and he scored 36 rushing TDs in 3 seasons. In 1988 alone Sanders set 34 NCAA records while rushing for 37 TDs (39 in total) and 2,628 yds in just 11 games - plus 222 yds and 5TDs in his bowl game. ESPN ranked it as the greatest single season in NCAA history and ranked Barry #2 all-time behind Red Grange in their list of the Top 25 College Players Ever. Emmitt had nice numbers for the Gators but Barry's were on a different planet.
@av8or757 While I agree with you, I think it comes down to more of the fact of longevity. Tebow was part of 2 NC wins with florida and had 2 solid years, and a halfway decent one as backup to Leak. Sanders only got to really shine in 1 year. It's a shame OSU just didn't bench Thurman Thomas (benching an all-american would be insane though). Valid arguments to both sides here.
@av8or757 Tim Tebow also surpassed his college hype, the jury is still out on his NFL career but he can only be a surprise if he is a sucessfull QB, the fact is Tebow rushed for 20 TD's in one season...and he's a QB, he also passed for 32 i believe the year he won the heisman, there is no way you look at Tebows stats that year and not say he had one of the greatest seasons ever, Barry is also very much in this discussion and he is still considered by most as the best RB to ever cradle a football
@MrHORSEtheMAN Tebow was good, but I don't even think he was the best QB of the decade. Vince Young was a better individual player, and Matt Leinart was more accomplished. Both Leinart and Young also had historic NC performances, while Tebow was better than average against OU.
@jrsam25 thats a whole other conversation / debate, but I do believe he did have the single greatest season of any player ever 2007, that is of course my own personal opinion, i think he is up there as greatest player of all time with players like Archie Griffin, Tommie Frazier and Charles Woodson.
@av8or757 im a huge Tim Tebow supporter and i definitely know that Tebow is one of the greatest ever. the stats and awards prove that, so the haters really annoy me. but i have to admit that he is over-hyped at times. especially when people say he is hands down #1!!! that has to go to Sanders, and it really should be more obvious. Barry should be remembered as the greatest to ever play. the stats r waaay tooo amazing. and the film is just wow o.o
@av8or757 sorry to disagree slightly but there ain't ANY FOOTBALL PLAYERS in berry's zip code. Once in a lifetime player.
Saying barry sanders name and tim tebow's name together is kind of funny, kinda like talking about Michael Jordan and Shawn Bradley in the same breath. One guy just doesn't belong
@av8or757 Barry's college career is underated because he only played 1 season, just like his NFL career is often underatted becuase he only played 10. IMO his junior year was the single greatest season in college football history. The numbers are just RIDICULOUS, he completely DEMOLISHED the single season records for most yards AND touchdwon's in a single season. If he came back for his senior year and put up similar numbers to his junior year, EVERYONE would him the GOAT of college football.
@av8or757 i like barry as much as anybody, but the fact that barry did well in the nfl has nothing to do with his college productivity. if u dont think that tebow was as a good a college athlete as barry then u are excercising your God given free will to accumulate your own personal opinions, of which we all have a plethora. but how many national championships did barry get? i'll take the championships every day of the week. God bless u
can u say 14 straight games of a 100 yards or more......or can you say 5 yards+ average everytime he touched the ball.....with the worst offensive line in NFL Barry Sanders was a humble beast in football!!!
Barry had Pro bowlers as well (Lomas Brown, Kevin Glover)
Every year Dallas won a superbowl Emmitt let the league in rush yards and tds
Barry FOLDED in the playoffs 386 yards and ONE td in six games....Emmitt on the other hand had his YPC go UP and has more yards AND tds than anyone in the playoffs
The lions without Barry went 4-3...The cowboys without Emmitt went 1-6
Emmitt is a better Rb than Barry....Barry is just flashier
Emmitt couldn't carry Barry's luggage dude for elusiveness and breakaway speed if he had Emmitts OL he would probably avg'ed over 2000+ yard a season. If Barry had played longer Emmitt wouldn't even be an afterthought.
@dawhiteguy622 No sane person would say emmitt is a better RB than barry. Emmitt had one of the all-time best o-lines, A Hall of Fame receiver, A Hall of Fame QB, and the best blocking fullback in the league. If emmitt played for detroit he would have had a solid career with maybe a pro bowl or two. Emmitt had good balance and run instincts but was slow, injury prone, and undersized. I can't believe someone would compare the most overrated rb in NFL history to the best rb in nfl history.
@bull864 -I have to disagree with you about emmitt smith being the most overrated Rb in nfl history. WOW! I'm a cowboys fan, emmitt fan & a die hard barry sanders fan. I played rb in college so i have a little knowledge about that position. You don't run for 16,000 plus yds in the pro's regardless of what type of line you have and be classified as overrated. You have to have other intangibles. Brah any body who played will tell you that. barry is in my top 5 pro & college rb's of all time.
@str8outtatexas1 Not saying Emmitt wasn't a very good back. He was. He had very good short area quickness and balance, not to mention his vision. I'm just saying if he played for Detroit, he wouldn't have put up near the numbers Barry did. He would have had a Rodney Hampton kind of career. Good, but nowhere near great. You have to acknowledge Emmitt had a superior supporting cast than any other top RB in NFL history.
@bull864 -We both have good points, but alot of that is the media who raises those questions & then everybody jumps on. Do you think jerry Rice would have all the yds. & td's he did if he played with the tampa bay bucs? How about dan marion? Would he had thrown for 200 td's & 50,000 yds. if he played with the bengals his entire career? NO to each question. They all had really good o-line play. It shows today & yesterday, without an o-line your team at any level will struggle.
@Imastuducksfan21 lol...yeah exceptint every stat category and most important...SUPERBOWL WINS! Oh..and Dallas went 1-6 without him in the lineup over his career.
@dawhiteguy622 Barry and Emmitt were both great, but personally I don't see Emmitt producing the same type of stats or even as much as Barry did with the talent on the Detroit Lion's team. The line wasn't exactly the best either, the only thing that even made them sound good was Barry's abilities to leave the players off balance and have them setup. More of something you would have to watch his actual games for yourself. Not a knock on Smith though, he is still one of the greatest.
one man cant win a championship. especially in the era of the BCS..its more about VOTES than PLAY nowadays. nc's dont mean anything when speaking about a individuals talent..it just means the team boils with talent
its funny because he didn't even use all his moves in college because the defenses were weak. you don't see his true greatness til the nfl when he was running for his life against big fast defenses and not many ever caught him from behind, if any.
didnt even play running back til the 4th game his senior year. still managed a D1 scholarship. didnt even start a football game til his junior year. set the single season rush record and won the heisman. then he just demolished the nfl.

1. His college games look no different from his NFL games lol. Other than the fact that Lions Offensive line sucked HARD.
2. He makes it look like I'm playing Madden on Rookie. hahaha.

Period. Just think if he had Emmit Smith's line..... enough said.
diamondbreaker23 11 months ago

And on top of all the AMAZING things he did on the field, the thing I admire the most is he wasn't a shit-talking punk-ass ni99er. He played ball and didn't have to talk shit.

found this on wikipedia:
Sanders led the nation by averaging 7.6 yards per carry and over 200 yards per game, including rushing for over 300 yards in four games. He set college football season records with 2,628 yards rushing, 3,248 total yards, 234 points, 39 touchdowns, of which 37 were rushing (also a record), 5 consecutive 200 yard games, scored at least 2 touchdowns in 11 consecutive games, and 9 times he scored at least 3 touchdowns

Tebow is NOT SPECIAL... oh YEA!!!

When Sanders actually had an offensive line to run behind, immagine if he was drafted by a good NFL team with a line that actually could open up some lanes for him, he would probably have had a season with over 3000 yards rushing.

for barry sanders 1988 was the best individual performace for one year for any running back in the history of college football. unbelieveable what he accomplished. he even ran a couple special teams kickoffs for td's. without a shadow of a doubt, he is the most elusive running back in the history of mankind including high school college and nfl. no one even comes close.

imagine if barry sanders went to a better team of his era. maybe the steelers, who's offense was good but left room for improvement in the running game. every finger that team had would have a ring on it.

What really sets me off is that there are people, 'EXPERTS' who claim that one Tim Tebow may be the GREATEST college player EVER.

So excuse me if I get upset to when I hear people seatin Tim Tebow likes he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

@av8or757 Did you ever see Emmitts numbers at Florida?
dallas5sb 1 year ago
@dallas5sb Emmitt's best season at Florida was 1,599 yds rushing and he scored 36 rushing TDs in 3 seasons. In 1988 alone Sanders set 34 NCAA records while rushing for 37 TDs (39 in total) and 2,628 yds in just 11 games - plus 222 yds and 5TDs in his bowl game. ESPN ranked it as the greatest single season in NCAA history and ranked Barry #2 all-time behind Red Grange in their list of the Top 25 College Players Ever. Emmitt had nice numbers for the Gators but Barry's were on a different planet.
echo6161 1 year ago
@av8or757 While I agree with you, I think it comes down to more of the fact of longevity. Tebow was part of 2 NC wins with florida and had 2 solid years, and a halfway decent one as backup to Leak. Sanders only got to really shine in 1 year. It's a shame OSU just didn't bench Thurman Thomas (benching an all-american would be insane though). Valid arguments to both sides here.
psychotron1099 1 year ago
@av8or757 Tim Tebow also surpassed his college hype, the jury is still out on his NFL career but he can only be a surprise if he is a sucessfull QB, the fact is Tebow rushed for 20 TD's in one season...and he's a QB, he also passed for 32 i believe the year he won the heisman, there is no way you look at Tebows stats that year and not say he had one of the greatest seasons ever, Barry is also very much in this discussion and he is still considered by most as the best RB to ever cradle a football
MrHORSEtheMAN 1 year ago
@MrHORSEtheMAN Tebow was good, but I don't even think he was the best QB of the decade. Vince Young was a better individual player, and Matt Leinart was more accomplished. Both Leinart and Young also had historic NC performances, while Tebow was better than average against OU.
jrsam25 1 year ago

JoeDaWg82 1 year ago 4

Every year Dallas won a superbowl Emmitt let the league in rush yards and tds

Emmitt is a better Rb than Barry....Barry is just flashier

dawhiteguy622 1 year ago
@dawhiteguy622
Emmitt couldn't carry Barry's luggage dude for elusiveness and breakaway speed if he had Emmitts OL he would probably avg'ed over 2000+ yard a season. If Barry had played longer Emmitt wouldn't even be an afterthought.
dcw9284 1 year ago
@dawhiteguy622 No sane person would say emmitt is a better RB than barry. Emmitt had one of the all-time best o-lines, A Hall of Fame receiver, A Hall of Fame QB, and the best blocking fullback in the league. If emmitt played for detroit he would have had a solid career with maybe a pro bowl or two. Emmitt had good balance and run instincts but was slow, injury prone, and undersized. I can't believe someone would compare the most overrated rb in NFL history to the best rb in nfl history.
bull864 1 year ago 4
@bull864 -I have to disagree with you about emmitt smith being the most overrated Rb in nfl history. WOW! I'm a cowboys fan, emmitt fan & a die hard barry sanders fan. I played rb in college so i have a little knowledge about that position. You don't run for 16,000 plus yds in the pro's regardless of what type of line you have and be classified as overrated. You have to have other intangibles. Brah any body who played will tell you that. barry is in my top 5 pro & college rb's of all time.
str8outtatexas1 2 months ago
@str8outtatexas1 Not saying Emmitt wasn't a very good back. He was. He had very good short area quickness and balance, not to mention his vision. I'm just saying if he played for Detroit, he wouldn't have put up near the numbers Barry did. He would have had a Rodney Hampton kind of career. Good, but nowhere near great. You have to acknowledge Emmitt had a superior supporting cast than any other top RB in NFL history.
bull864 2 months ago
@bull864 -We both have good points, but alot of that is the media who raises those questions & then everybody jumps on. Do you think jerry Rice would have all the yds. & td's he did if he played with the tampa bay bucs? How about dan marion? Would he had thrown for 200 td's & 50,000 yds. if he played with the bengals his entire career? NO to each question. They all had really good o-line play. It shows today & yesterday, without an o-line your team at any level will struggle.
