There really is no easy way around it. Usually when you try to be polite about it and not cause embarassment, they start acting like you did something wrong..."I know this card is working, Maybe you didn't swipe it correctly"...Like I've never done this in my life. I just discreetly say...I'm sorry sir/mam, this card has been declined, is there another form of payment I can use?" That way I am being blunt, but discreet. No need to anounce it to the table.

i actually *used* to do this.... it actually becomes incredibly embarrassing for some people, especially if they're are trying to make a great impression on the rest of their party.

Here's a way I found that is a little bit more comforting to the guest and the rest of the party: I'm sorry Sir/Ma'm but for some reason our computer wont accept your card. Is there any other cards I could try?

Honestly, I've never had anyone tell me that it's my computers fault. Most people will read the message you're giving them and take it as you need another form of payment.

Up above Icecreamcycle has posted good advice, circling the word Declined and just handing it to them silently. It leaves them to slip another card in there without anyone noticing.
