Tool... Craig Packer stated the lions mane offers protection because lions tend to attack other parts of the body such as the hind legs and back.
Tigers however do not.
Wish people would stop misquoting/lying or spurting out information with only half the story in, just to give another animal a false sense of superiority.
Well yeah its gona protect from the blows but the blows would be to the face not the neck, believe me a tigers bite is strong enough to to kill a lion with a bite to the neck, and vice verca, di u no a siberian tiger grows up to 20inches of hair around its neck in the winter?
The blows are rarely to the face, if you watch video's of lions attacking each other, they tend to go for the neck, because it's a more guaranteed hit, whereas if they go for the face, the other lion could bite it's paw, creating a whole other issue. And yes the siberian tiger grows a thick white ruff of fur around their neck for protection against the cold in the winter, but 20 inches? That's longer than a lions mane dude. You can't argue with me when you spurt out false fats like that.
they do get blows to the face, but not all the time, and they aren't scared at all, you're getting the lion and the tiger confused, the tiger is a timid (cowardice) animal, I'm not insulting it, but it's true, they prefer run than fight, they never fight, lion's on the other hand are aggressive to a fault, I mean we've all seen that video of the lion charging the group of safari hunters, and it jumps on one, a tiger wouldn't do that, a tiger would run, the lion's are naturally aggressive animals
Your forgettin tigers are secretive animals, they dont like to be seen, just like leopards, and do u think lions fight everytime they are confronted? jesus man have u ever watched any documentaries? ive seen lions run from other lions plenty of times, i was watchin "big cat diaries" on BBC and watched a mother cheetah chase off a lioness cause it got too close to her cubs, lions are brave and i love everythin about them, but fearless? gimme a break
I never said they're fearless, I said they're aggressive to a fault, which is true, but obviously if an adolescent lion is confronted by a full grown leader of a pride, the adolescent one will run away, they do often give fighting a go, but then they get owned and therefore run away.
Actually lions tend to go for the the spine and the sides not the neck, your sayin tigers run?? wat animal wud a tiger run from in the wild? you need to do some serious research man, seriously start readin up on them, there are some tigers that regularly prey on bears! tell me why a male lion cant survive on its own? u ever seen a nomadic male lion go for a buffalo? not a chance mate,u need to watch some tiger documentaries tigers fight an kill eachother all the time over teritory
THANK YOU! The mane does not provide any real protection...think about it ...if a tiger can take down an elephant...which they have been know to do....do you really think some hair is gonna stop the tiger.
actually if you think about it, it makes sense, the hair condenses when its bitten down on, the lions mouth is big, but not big enough to bite an entire mane. Its quite simple really, in fact, why on earth did you think otherwise? how old are you?
Doesnt make any sense actually, if u were wearin a thick wooly hat and i tried to stab u in the head with a 3or4 inch knife would it go through? OF COURSE IT WOULD! the lions mane is just hair! im 22, how old are u?
Well if you're 22 then you're extremely narrow minded, a thick woolly hat? What kind of comparison is that to a lions mane!? sure if you had a knife you could penetrate the skin, for the thin blade would just run straight though the hair, but remember, that's downwards penetration, a tigers/lions bite is at an angle because of the jaw/hinge it's on. Also, their teeth don't protrude 4 inches out of their mouths! The tiger/lion would get nothing but hair, it's simple physics, I'm 16 by the way.
Simple physics? stay in school bro, why do u think the worlds best lion expert says the mane offers no protection from a bite? this is someone who studied them in their natural habitat for over 20years.. u expect me to believe u over craic packer? please..
If a tiger can bite through bone surely it can bite through hair =]
Yes a tiger can bite through bone, but that's a completely different story, for the bone is a solid "non-bendable" thing, hair conforms to different shapes. The tigers canines might scratch the lion's neck if it were a perfectly placed bite, but in a furious battle to the death, the tiger wouldn't even get near the neck. I honestly can't believe how stupid people are to not realise this. Sure if the lion didn't have a big mane then the tiger would be able to bite him, but that's not the case.
I cant believe your sayin this, look at the fight "the big cage" the tiger had the lion by the back of the neck and only for the tiger was sprayed in the face by the owner, that lion was fucked.. its hair, just hair, 4 k9s will easily go through it, its been seen, tested, and the worlds leading lion expert will bet on it too
Yes the back of the neck, where there is much less hair, on the bottom and the sides however, there is plenty of hair, it's there to impress the lionesses sure, but its also there to "cushion" the blows from rival lions, a lion isn't going to jump on the back of a lion and bite its neck is it? A lion is going to land heavy blows from its paws isn't it? Which the mane protects, and if a tiger were to bite down, well it depends on the bite.
Well yeah its gona protect from the blows but the blows would be to the face not the neck, believe me a tigers bite is strong enough to to kill a lion with a bite to the neck, and vice verca, di u no a siberian tiger grows up to 20inches of hair around its neck in the winter?
the mane does offer protection, at youtube search, type in "the lions crown" to see how a lions mane protect the neck.
they made that claim that a lion`s mane doesn`t protect the neck because lions rarely go for the neck, as this puts them in a vulnerable position. when a tiger tries to claw a lion, it`s paws get tangled in the mane and when it tries to bite the neck, it often misjudges the distance and bites the mane instead.
Mane is effective as protection, but please, look this official research that shows why and where it becomes smaller. Lions living in colder climates have bigger manes and are stronger in combat. Lions living in very hot places have no mane because the diadvantages are greater than the advantages. Seek for fieldmuseum and Patterson research about Tsavo lions.
Please don't post BS. All lions live in Africa and in very similar climates. Have you ever seen a lion hunting in a sandy desert, or running through snow? Mane offers little protection against climate since it only covers less than 30% of the lions body surface area.
k1ddyn4mite is true.I saw that video on Animal Planet. When he goes on ,he says they become real warm in the heat and that they by attacking the rear.Which for you who are gonna go"No TIGERS,TIGERS beat lions caz they have stripes."Tigers bite the neck, yet lions have a main and it really helps the fight so tigers would be biting a hair ball....that can roar.
i heard the rest of the statement, he continues saying it doesnt help because lions attack each other from the rear, and that it heats them up... too hot
It is all a bullshit: the mane makes more difficult to really see where to strike for throat-seeker or skull-breakters predators. In circuses, it has been seen that tigers had troubles to kill lions by breaking their skull thanks to the mane that makes more difficult to aim and works like an extra leather coat.
The fuck that's not ture the mane offers a shit load of protection when another animal is iting the neck it protects the Lion from their teeths. the reporter had no info
A lions mane is like a man's beard. Let your beard grow and don't shave.

its a fact, that the lions mane has no advantages in a fight. the mane is just to attract females, nothing more. its already proven.

Where does commentator get his info from? The mane does provide protection for the vulnerable neck area.
It also makes them look bigger to any challengers and, apparently, lions with the biggest manes are more populer with the lionesses.
