You hooked it up right but there's one Major thing you've missed. You didn't turn on your LOOP button. That's why your amp knobs don't work. Your GT8 is just basically hooked up to your amp with three additional cables. Turn on LOOP, mess with effects chain, Rock.
@NZLeduc - you're absolutely right. This is a standard series effects loop rig. Like you said, the four cable method allows you to include your amp's preamp in the signal chain when you want it. The proper 4 cable method is:
This is not the proper 4 cable method, the whole point of the 4 cable method is to be able to use your preamp settings from your amp while being able to place effects before and after it. And to be able to switch back and forth from that and the format your using here. I seen a really good video demonstrating this on a Digitech RP1000, different pedal same concept.
if your going to bypass the knobs on front anyway just one run cable to the marshall power amp it makes no sense to run 4 cables and get the same result with 2
@skiesburngrey I agree with this. Your method is simply using the Marshall as a power amp and you can just connect the output of the GT-8 to the fx return on the Marshall and that's it. One cable is all you need.
When I use this method the volume pedal will only act as a volume pot (increase and decrease of gain) but I want it to act as a master volume. I have tried placing it in several different parts of the fx chain, but it wont work (btw im using the GT-10, but I'd imagine its not too different)
The Volume pedal will have to be in the FX loop, after both the amp preamp and the Boss preamp. But the trouble is that on this particular amp the FX loop is not serial, meaning it splits the signal and sends some to the power amp and some to whatever FX unit your using, and you can't change this by the FX level knobs. You will have to modify it to make to serial, other wise you'll won't get the Boss's full potential. I had same trouble with my one.
@slimakaphatj Yeah, this seems to be the case. Would it work if I bought a seperate volume pedal and put it at the very start or very end of the signal path? or would I still have the same problem?
Nah, you'd just end up with a volume pedal that pulls your FX in the loop out of the mix and leaves the dry guitar signal to go through. You will have to mod the FX loop so its serial, which isn't to hard to do. Once you have done this the preamp and power amp are basically disconnected and have to be connected via a patch cable, or your FX unit/volume pedal (what ever you want to put in the loop), which means you can use a volume pedal as your master volume. Look on the Marshall forum.
Hey Man! Great video, really simple to understand it!! I have a question. Can you use the gt's wah before the preamp with this mode? Thank's for the video!
Hi man, I'm sorry, but you are absolutely wrong. 4CM requires GT-8's LOOP section ON and its preamp section OFF. Its main goal is to use the combo or head's preamp... If you bypass that preamp, 4CM is absolutely USELESS!!!
Yeah but thats not the issue. 4 cable method requires an amp with a serial FX loop, if you want to run the four cable method (or 5 cables for this amp cause it has a stereo power amp) then you have to modify it so that all of the preamp out signal goes to the FX rtn on the boss or what ever your using. This amp was designed to work with studio rack reverbs etc, which is a bit daft for an amp, but there you go. I put a switch in which cuts resistor R91 and R92 on the board, that sorts it out.
I just got this unit today and am learning how to use it. i'm so new that i just want to switch between a clean patch to a distorted patch using the ctrl pedal like you did there. how do you do that?
You must turn the loop ON on your GT-8. The amp sound NOT be paralized as you put it. The whole point is for the GT-8 to colour the amps sound, NOT replace it. Amp Sim should be turned off as well. Otherwise you could just plug straight into the amps return and bypass the preamp.
Hey man!!!! one question, what are the advantages and disadvantages to play with this connections? can you explain to me please. actually i have the same gear you have..but I want to achieve the best sound possible. thank you.
News flash...if your amp controls arent working for tone shaping then you didnt do it right. The whole point of the 4 cable method is to be able to use the amps preamp along with the GT-8, not to disable it. If there not working then it is most likely that you didnt turn on the effect loop on the GT-8. If thats what you did then it would sound no different than with just 1 or 2 output cables.
In this system distortion from amp is going through GT8? Or GT8 dont influence to this distortion and gives only effects like delay/reverb? I mean, if in this system distortion from amp going through GT8, the GT8 have to convert signal from analog to digital, gives effects and convert from digital to analog. The result is the real distortion from amp sounds badly:/
hey .. i have a 2 channel krank head .. when i connect the 4 cable method , i am not able to change my channels on the amp .. any clue how i can get that going ?
The reason is, the "4 Cable Method" actuall disables ALL of your amps abilities, in the sense that: It puts the GT-8 BEFORE your amps preamp: So, in essence or in theory, the GT-8 is now your amps head. Go to your distortions and choose "custom": Either your amps clean or distortion is going to be on in that setting.
If you have questions or need a demo, (since I don't have many videos), I will be HAPPY to show you in video-form!
Basically, it makes the boss gt-8 the amp head, but you still have your amps power to power the cab...So, it actually puts the gt-8 AFTER the power-amp, but making the is BEFORE the preamp...
Without the 4 cables, you basically would just be going into the front of the amp or the effects loop, altering all tone, but the gt-8 is the only real source of sound, just the amps power amp is powering everything.
its mostly for those who don't wanna use the built in amp simulations on the GT and wanna use their own amp's distortion but still be able to use reverb and delay and all those modulation effects POST-DISTORTION, it allows you to have 2 sets of effects pre and post effects, pre being wah, com, noise gate, OD, and post being reverbs and delays and modulations, teh way this guy has it is so he uses the AVT as a poweramp and speakes but thats not the main reason to have this set up
the best way to use it so that your amp becomes only a power amp is to plug the GT's output straight into the AMP's effects RETURN, turn the effects loop MIX knob on the amp all the way up, and plug a DUMMY (just a 1/4" plus with nothing connected to it) cable into the effects SEND of the amp so it bypasses your preamp completly
once again you dont need 4 cables to set your amp up as a power amp just an additional 1/4" plug, in my case i have the 4 cable set up and im also using the AMP CONTROL jack to switch between clean and distortion on my amp, i only need 1 distortion and 1 clean sound, the GT is to sweeten those sounds, i can add a chorus or flanger to my clean or delay or reverb same with the distortion, anyways just thought it might help you understand it better.
johnd1224 - I live in India but bought my GT8 from US. Had the same problem as yours, i bought the power supply from boss with Indian Voltage and it works fine with me. With countries, only the input value of power changes, the output remains the same hence your gt8 is safe. make sure you get it from boss. ask your music vendor to do it for you or go to the boss site.
5cm is the go if ya have a 2 channel amp, connecting the fifth cable to ya amp control, and to the amp channel switch give the ability to switch the preamp from clean to dist with the gt8, plus effects etc
@28monkeyking28 alot of guitarists are using two separate amps. Left out on the GT-8, right out to another. Otherwise you could go left and right out into stereo effects return on the amp if it is capable.
@28monkeyking28 You need another amp so you would set it up as shown here, but take another cable from the Right Out on the boss to the effects return of another amp.
@28monkeyking28 You will need two amps then, you do the 4 cable method and then use the right output from the effects unit and run it into another amps return. This would work best with matching amps. I have done with with two combos that were almost the same.
can you help i live in spain and have lost my power adapter my boss gt8 was bought in England and when i went to my local music store the guy there said a european boss gt8 adapter would not be the correct wave and the gt8 would work but not sound the same and to get one from the u.k is apain. any body help ??

I have not found that the Gt-8 distortion is as good as the marshall amp itself, did you have this problem, I almost want to use the gt-8 for everything (clean crunch) then switch back to the amp lead/distortion i don't think this is possible.

Hey, I don't have much experience at all with this sort of thing. and I see this is so the guitar and pedal by-pass the tone and effect nobs on the face of the amp?
Does this give a clearer sound for for the pedal? or suppress noise or something? (Or any other advantages?)
hi. the amp has 24 knobs. only 3 knobs work if u use 4 cable system - master volume, presence and effect loop mix. The tone of marshall and gt8 is alot better if u connect it this way. Connect it from the front and the tone is not really that warm and organic and its noisy. With the 4 cable system, the sound is quiet even when the voume is at the middle. The tone is warmer..thats all i can describe it. But the amp is so damn heavy. I always bring a trolley with me...
hi GreatBigSlide. Yes i have written this question in 20 other gt-8 videos, the reason is to get a best answer of my questions from all the guitarists. In knowing all guitarists views it helps in knowing what the best to choose. I am still confused about the best amplifier to choose for Gt-8. Some say marshall but let me check more on this from all guitarists. thanks.
I have an old fender amo, 1 x 12. it doesnt have an effects lop so everything is done at the front of the amp. The gt -8 is so noizy..u cannot appreciate what Boss is trying to trying to do. For that, I did not touch the gt-8 for almost a year from brand new coz i thought i bought a wrong equipment. when i got the marshall avt and discovered the effect loop connection by accident, things started to shape in a different form. I think any amps will do provided it has an effects loop at the back.
Yes, I agree to turn the amp on last to prevent from damaging your amp speakers when you turn on your GT-8 . I really appreciate your enthusiasm of finding out the most out of your GT-8 but not on your sophisticated and expensive amplifier. Thanks for sharing.
Mate, i did not show case my amp. i was showing the rest of the world how to use a 4 cable system on gt-8 or even gt10. None in youtube demonstrated how to connect 4 cables in gt-8 in details like the way i did. my AVT amp, its a crappy amp. its neither sophisticated nor expensive.
Thanks a lot, Bud! I am actually picking up a GT-8 tomorrow and just ran downstairs to take a peek at my amp. I have an old school Fender Princeton Chorus but it has the effects loops on the front so I can't wait to give it a try.

you wrong my friend:
loop in gt 8 must be ON, placed properly in the fx chain and Preamp emulation must be off.
this allows you to use a "phisical" preamp in the chain, otherwise there's no reason for 4 cabling.
dedoguitarman 1 year ago
hi...i use 4cable connection in another way:
activating the loop of gt8 (normal set, placed properly in the efx chain) and deactivating the preamp emulation;
in your patch i see Loop OFF and the preamp emulation ON.
what's your philosophy?

It depends what sound you want. It's like asking what is the best sounding guitar. Nothing is the "best", every combination is different.

hi GreatBigSlide. Yes i have written this question in 20 other gt-8 videos, the reason is to get a best answer of my questions from all the guitarists. Yeah I see what your sayin', I use a Marshal 250dfx with my gt-8.
And the marshall has a pretty deep sound with this guy.
(I'm no pro that's for sure, so I don't know what all the amps are going to sound like)
But, really, again it depends what you're going for. No brand is actually "better", they just have different sounds.
My Marshall seems to handle the heavier sounds pretty well, also has a nice and deep sound when it's clean.

You should always turn speakers (guitar amp) on last. Pedals first, fx loop effects, then amp.

Thanks a lot, Bud! I am actually picking up a GT-8 tomorrow and just ran downstairs to take a peek at my amp. I have an old school Fender Princeton Chorus but it has the effects loops on the front so I can't wait to give it a try.
