Thats why we need to move out of the current system, but not into a primitive form. We must progress into a true civilization, we need to move into a resource based economy! GO watch "Zeitgeist Addendum", and "Zeitgeist Where are We Now", and "Where are we going", and "Zeitgeist Orientation Presentation"(this one if you don't want to watch them all), and then watch "Zeitgeist the Movie".
That movie is nothing but a utopian fantasy and any attempt to pursue a "resource based economy" (as opposed to what?) will end like ALL utopian fantasies, in calamity. Human iIndustrial civilization itself is a flash in the pan. If it ends now or in a 100 years, it will end. But in order to avoid a greater catastrophe in the future we should try to end it sooner and accept a smaller catastrophe now.
@WSWarthog Thats you're beliefs and its far from the facts, a rbe would exist now if it wasn't for the profit incentive. The only reason we keep going into collapses is because we always remain in a system that is either in a scarce environment or it promotes artificial scarcity in order to keep the system working. Its not a Utopian fantasy, its what is already possible, get informed on our technical reality. We can and many of us will make sure we do.
I don't want to be argumentative or rude but when you claim that the source of all the world problems is a global conspiracy pivoting on "artificial" scarcity there exists a heavy burden of proof that the adocates of the Zeitgeist movement seem incapable of bearing. Anyone who disputes there claims is simply dismissed as deluded.
Furthermore, you've yet to show how the problems that result from technical civilization will be avoided.
For those reading through the comments: stonemonkeysan, for the record, I do grow at least some of my own food, and I know how to build structures, make my own clothes (from the ground up, starting with shearing sheep), hunt, fish, sail, brew beer, cook, can, and do many other things useful for sustaining ones existence outside the wage labor system.
Give me a world of toxin-free natural homes; pollution-free lakes, rivers and oceans; an actual community that feels like one; and the time/opportunity to enjoy them all, etc., any day over the tragedy and desperation we have today.
The prison of many a 40 hour work-week seems inefficient, a waste of human potential, to truly dream, think, play, create, participate, interact, rest, and be free.

Absolutly brilliant! Its not that our civilizations benefits are bad, its the basis on which they are brought about. We need a Native American President!
I can see the point that this video is trying to make, and not in a subtle way either. It boils down to "Look at me I am *so* beyond racism and prejudice that I claim to hate my own civilisation [while hypocritically enjoying its benefits that I couldn't imagine doing without]"
part 3. How do you expect to sustain 6 billion people by going backwards? Also if we all start spending more time growing crops etc. what happens to education, science and technology?. I agree that corporations do terrible things, but others are also improving our lives and solving problems that we face. You could argue that we wouldnt be in trouble if we hadnt become "civilised", however we are here and now and have to face these problems rather than complaining about "What could have been."
part2.You mention holders of capital and greed. Have you given away all YOUR money and support yourself naturally. Im tired of this urban hippie movement. Stop complaining and start doing if it is so important to you. At least in the 60's they tried to have communes. Also you are inadvertently supporting the often cruel ignorance of "tribal" living. Initiation rites, superiority of men over women, genital mutilation etc etc. Dont mislead yourself that the "old ways" were somehow better.
I have read stories from some woman who actually lived in a communal setting in the 60's and 70's. They said it sucked! The women did most of the work, while the men drank and played music and cards. Even a small garden is hard work. I am strong w/great stamina and it is even hard for me to keep up w/ the chores, preparing food, looking out for kids and taking care of the yard. No easy task, esp if you add in some live stock. But on the up side of things, no need for a gym!
Been there too and on my way back. Your food will be better, your family relationships stronger and most important of all, you can control the pace of your daily life.
no doubt the food is better, I think it makes or breaks the relationships... but I think the weather and the weeds control the pace of life. :) Have a good one and best of luch in your endevours. I would love to live like that real soon, too.
Part 1. "Civilisation" is a natural progress for any people that settle in one place. ALL cultures have "civilised" themselves at some point and to a certain degree, not just the "all evil white man". Religion, art, culture, music, technology, medicine, and advancement in techniques are all attributed to becoming civilised, and no longer living a hunter/gatherer lifestyle. I bet you dont hunt, grow food, make your own shelter and clothing, or even know how.
Some human groups discovered in Oceania in the 19th century didn't have music or fire. And many more were hunter gatherers. And cannibal =P but that's another story! Yum!
Just wondering if this film was inspired by Daniel Quinn's work... if not I highly recommend you read Ishmael and Story of B.
Otherwise, I'd luuurve to see you produce more short films like this one. Perhaps even turn this into a series of which Civilization! is just the first.
Why not explore the Great Forgetting... contrubute to the Great Remembering and finally lead your audience toward a New Tribal future.
your begin some what unfair, civilization has brought extension of life, improve goods and service, and greater standard of living than any other system. to say that it provides all the thinks that you used to provide for your self is not quite true, industrialized civilization can provide thinks no other system can
What you say is true, to some extent. The problem is that these "extensions" are mostly controlled by holders of capital, who grant those extensions as a way to make profits for themselves, rather than for the greater social good. For many many others, "civilization" is a codeword for enforced poverty and unemployment. I might also add that the ideals of "civilization" represent a life that is unsustainable in the long term. We should look for alternatives!
Those lost hours to'Call Centre'phonelines, held to ransom by a corporate system playing:-Vivaldi' Four Seasons..

Find out what the word "unsustainable" really actually means...
@eipiplus1 , In the initial stages of civilisation there we see a marked decline in the nutritional wellbeing and longevity of most members of society compared to immediate-return hunter-gatherers. And due to land clearance and de-skilling of population it became difficult to leave voluntarily if one objected to one's conditions.
Improvements in lifestyle associated with civilisation are actually due to innovation in response to its atrocious conditions (e.g sanitation in response to crowding).
Of what use is the extension of a fundamentally miserable existence of servitude?
Why would you sell your freedom and autonomy off for something as cheap as a mass-produced technological toy that won't bring joy into your life and the novelty of which wears off within the first five minutes of unpackaging? You're trading away the only "fulfilling" mode of life for fleeting hedonistic pleasures and asbtract unworkable ideals.
@eipiplus1 it also brought with it the toxins and pollutions that have caused a great many man made diseases and accelerated extinctions of species on this planet. It's also forced billions into poverty and stripped them of their ability to care for themselves.
But the biggest kicker of all in your industrialized civilization is good theory is IT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE. So, enjoy 'it' while you have it. You can't continue to grow the worlds population, rape the world over and keep this system.
Great Video. 5 stars. Two excellent books to get you one your way. Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. And "Endgame: The Problem of Civilization" by Derrick Jensen. Thanks for this video!

I buy my food with wages, the system works! I also have to listen to "experts" to make ends meet and its not worth it. I'm listening to them right now by sitting at work but I rebel by watching this video while they pay me.
Yep... there's no one right way for people to live. You must earn their pieces of paper that give you permission to exist... makes me sicker all the time. He's right, other systems might work too. Oh yeah, they worked better. That's why we had to kill them...hide all the evidence! Stop the world, I wanna throw civilization off!
I knew something was wrong the first day I smelt the exhaust fumes of my parents car !
I thought that stinks, can't be good for the air we breath. And I was always confused as to why people paid for land and animals did not. ????
