"his grace and compassion are said to protect those who turn to him in times of need."
I am not going to argue or dispute your statement, as I am a buddhist. Also, I am not a fool to claim that I am more educated than you think. However, Lord Buddha is not living or he is not a spirit for him to protect those who turn to him in times of need. This is exactly the point I was trying to say.
A hermit once asked the Lord Buddha whether the enlightened one would continue to exist after death. The Buddha replied that existence and non-existence are concepts that don't apply. The hermit asked whether an enlightened one will both exist and not exist or, neither exist and not exist. the Lord said, none of these concepts can be used to define a Buddha as enlightened beings are as unfathomable as an ocean. so to say that the Buddha is not "living" is just as false as saying he is living.
I am a Sri Lankan. It does not matter how the chanting is pronounced. What matters the most is to understand the teachings and try to lead a life accordingly. After all, Buddhism is not a religion as some people like to think. It is a philosophy. Lord Buddha never preached to worship him or to treat him like a God. Infact, he was not a God. We as buddhist go to the buddhist temple in order to show our respect to the teacher.
Actually, contrary to what many uneducated people think, Buddhism is actually a religion. Yes it has a philosophic element, and arguably more so than most other religions do, but ultimately it is a doctrine of salvation. Also, while Buddhists don't pray to the lord Buddha,he is their 'refuge'and his grace and compassion are said to protect those who turn to him in times of need.
