This was one of my favorite parts of Auckland! My buddy and I were staying on like the 7th floor of a hotel and would watch the pedestrian crossing on Customs & Queen Streets. I also loved the "laser tag" to prompt the crosswalks in NZ and Australia. Stopping all the traffic for pedestrians just seems so much more efficient -- I wish we'd start it here in the US Midwest!
wow i just came from auckland two days ago, and i was on that same street and notice that everyone crossed the street at the same time, yeah dont see that here in the us much.
Instead having to cross the road 2x to get to the other side you dont have to wait long and the cars like it because they can turn without having to wait for heaps of people
No. Since, everyone is crossing when the light allows them to and they are doing it at designated crosswalks it would be legal in the US as well and just be called crossing the road. However, expect to get hit if you think you can cross diagonally across the road whenever you are prompted to walk!!!

It's called a 'Barnes Dance' after Denver traffic engineer Henry Barnes. After 60 years operation in Denver, they were removed last week.

They have similar crosswalks in Tokyo, It stops all the traffic and just allows people to cross whatever direction they need.

jaywalking is when you illegally cross the road isnt it? this isnt illegal. all four sets of lights are red which lets everyone cross at once.

Is this strange? This doesn't happen in the US (or wherever you're from)?
thedailyenglishshow 5 years ago
Maybe sometimes in somewhere downtown like New York, but normally all of traffic does not stop at once for people to cross.
