5:31 reminds me of Hot Lead & Cold Feet where Don's character and Jack Elam kept trying to draw and shoot each other but something always happened on the count of three.
If "The Case of the Punch in the Nose" shows Barney at his most trouble making, and obnoxious (a rare FURIOUS Andy: GO AND TRY TO NOT CAUSE MORE DAMAGE ON THE WAY) This shows Barney at his most courageous, and vulnerable. I'm sure that Andy was proud of him.
I've seen this one many times : 2:00 Barney finally had enough and stood tall.
I like it when he said 'see this badge, that means I'm sworn to uphold the law, there's a lot of people bigger than the 2 of you,it's as simple as that'.
This is one of my favorite episodes: well acted as usual, great directing, great camera angles. Barney having to face his fears & learning about self discovery were some more elements that made this show one of the greatest. Allan Melvin, who played Sgt. Hacker in "Gomer Pyle" and appeared in about 8 episodes on "The Andy Griffith Show," did another great job. Somehow you just forget that he played 8 different roles on the same show. Instead, you just accept each role as if it was his first.
It's moments like this that make TAGS my favorite show. For all his shakiness and bluster and everything else, when Barney's mettle was tested, he always proved himself to be quite a guy.
@TomBarristerX It really was. It's a pity that in the next moment he reverted to his usual inept self. Seems a bit of a lost opportunity for his character to grow.
@plasticman6 It was more about an oridinary man rising to the occasion and doing what was needed, a theme that Howard Hawks specialized in (Sergeant York, Rio Bravo, El Dorado). You see Barney do this in other episodes ("Andy on Trial" comes to mind). To have Barney's character grow permanently would probably have been detrimental to the show
@plasticman6 , Barney did a great job facing his fears and those bullies. True they could have beat him up and left him laying. But he knew that and while he was afraid he still stood up to them. the way this situation was hndle was brillant. you wouldn't see this in todays cop shows.

This show had excellent writers and with Barney the show was at a level that probably hasn't been equaled to this day.

When the chips were really down, Barney showed a lot of courage, as he did in other episodes.

Barney was actually pretty brave because it takes a brave man to face up to his fears even when he is not quite sure about the outcome.

He also played Alice's boyfriend "Sam the Meatcutter' on The Brady Bunch
