Since we can never know who was thinking what, we cannot say it lacks soul. For me, art is not only about the artist. It becomes art when I see the work and relate. When I was 14 Someone told me to look up Bright Eyes, this was the first song I heard. From the moment I heard this I was like, this isn't just regular music, this was art.

@Fancypants813 We can never be sure why one created something. We assume "pop music" comes from a place of silly thoughts, when we simply do not know what the artist was thinking. Since we can never know who was thinking what, we cannot say it lacks soul. For me, art is not only about the artist. It becomes art when I see the work and relate. Perhaps one sees a motivation where others do not because they have a better understanding of the subject or emotion.

I'm not sure why you would hate this song if you were actually depressed. If it doesn't suit your musical tastes, sure. But if it does, and you find yourself feeling down about something, this song might reflect how you're feeling. I feel like you're more likely to cling to a song that is attuned with how you feel rather than shun it.

No offense but even pop artists lyrics are given a ton of thought, more so than some of these songs. Don't get me wrong I love me some bright eyes but theres a reason why he doesnt sell as much as those rapstars. its because they basically mind f*ck you. every word is timed correctly, and repeated to get it stuck in your head, in addition they have to write those songs with the correct syllables and rhyme schemes. *Pop doesnt want smart lyrics because people aren't smart.*

But if I draw a stick man, with no effort, people can say it's art, but it isn't. Pop music, where the the lyrics are given no thought or meaning, is like the stick man. People can extract joy and emotion out of it, but all that shows is a lack of taste or maturity in people's taste.

Taste is subjective, but technical talent is not. If you were to just string together a series of chords in some machine, it could be (poorly done) music.
Someone deriving joy from a kesha song doesn't imply anything except that their subjective taste prefers kesha. It doesn't suggest lack of taste or lack of a mature taste-- taste being a subjective value they certainly hold if they hold a preference.

Perhaps they lost someone who drew stick figures; now whenever they draw a stick figure, it's from a place in their hearts and that makes it art. While I personally think pop music is lacking depth, others may not and they are right. For whatever reason, for them it is music. There is no absolution in perspective.
