  • This should be taught at sunday school.

  • Who is the narrator?

  • @DieselDownunder It just MIGHT be the person who made the video...

  • @IlersichProductions Thats a comprehensive answer - too bad that it answers the question...but really answers nothing....his birth name would suffice

  • @DieselDownunder His channel and other videos, one of which is conveniently titled "Who I am," could answer in more detail.

  • @IlersichProductions Soooo......i take it you don't know....well fvck me that was a hell of a long way to go about telling me that - look its cool ill find out and let you know...hang on screw that ill find out then act like a 5 yr old and not tell you...so ner!

  • @DieselDownunder I know perfectly well who it is. /watch?v=2YMxpqYEjyo

  • Now I finally know how creatures change over time, thank you!! I've been looking for the answer all night!

  • Are people here really that stupid?

  • I'm curious if the person who made the video now wishes they didn't have the Sheen family in there.

  • This Video is awesome! I can't believe the high amount of bad votes... probably fanatic christians or other dumb people :-/

Thanks for uploading this video, it's very easy to understand the concept of natural selection and evolution :-)

  • Hehe, imagine if "creationism" and some bronze-age superstition like christianity or islam had been true and all of science had been wrong, eh? Yeah, and imagine if Santa Claus was real.. Some times I wish I'd never started looking at the comment sections of YouTube videos, then I could have kept believing that most people are reasonably intelligent and capable of grasping at least some mainstream science.

  • Does evolution require drastic environmental change?

  • @Xenu No, it doesn't. The environment includes other organisms, and even other members of the same species, since on the genetic level, they are competition.

It doesn't need to change drastically, but as long as it changes, adaptation will occur. And even as a perfectly adapted organism physically, there is a way to go further genetically - like woo all the females, or just manage to raise more kids that others, and so on.

  • Why are eskimos not hairy yet middle eastern and south american people are?

  • @muntario1982 Maybe because humans wear clothes and more hair would retain moisture on the surface of the skin beneath the layers of clothing. Such moisture would then freeze... and middle eastern/S.American people more often go with skin exposed to the elements, so they're less encumbered by more hair growth..??

  • those of you who don't believe evolution are retarded.

and luftigus stop being such a little bitch your arguments are irrelevant to the whole topic. Don't you have anything better to do like a church group or some stupid shit like that.

Get a fucking life and education.

  • @utoac I'm on a fence. I've derided "creationists", but I don't KNOW any better than they do. There is "evidence" that both theories are ludicrous. And evidence that substantiates both theories. Is there something in between? Or something totally different? Don't be so quick to disdain that which opposes an opinion that you can't truly verfiy.

  • those of you who don't believe evolution are retarded.

and luftigus stop being such a little bitch your arguments are irrelevant to the whole topic. Don't you have anything better to do like a church group or some stupid shit like that.

  • I love the "mutations are mistakes and can't be beneficial" argument. I always want to say "have you ever accidentally made a bank shot?.. did it still count?" I was watching football once and the QB threw the ball to a reciever, it got intercepted by an unintended reciever, and run in for a touchdown... still counts

  • @Craigipedia That's a good point.. but mutations would account for a verify small percentage of the adaptations in evolultion

  • I preferred the stick-hypothetici, they looked cooler.

  • I wonder why people doubt evolution? I mean its kind of obvious that it is logical. Of course you can't prove it to anyone who has already made up his/her mind that it is false. Also I don't understand why people think that just because evolution is true (in our minds) that it disproves the existence of a god.

  • If your faith in God depends entirely on a book of fairy tales, then it's very threatening.

  • @mynameisjonas45, people typically doubt evolution for two reasons. Firstly, if evolution is correct, there was no Adam and Eve, no original sin, no fall from grace, and eventually no need for Jesus to die to redeem us. Secondly, there's a steady stream of lies & misinformation regarding evolution being fed to people by certain religious leaders. People trust them because... well, if you can't trust your pastor who CAN you trust? This deliberate fraud perpetrated on the faithful is shameful.

  • trust your pastor?

I believe the Catholic church has had to dig very deep into their pockets to pay off members who made the mistake of trusting their children with men of trust

  • @suzbailey23 The MAIN reason people will discount evolution is much simpler.. or perhaps a derivative of one of the "causes" you suggest.. Anyway, the main reason people are so quick to refute it is because it is more complicated that creationism and most people are very simple creatures. Rant and rave... controversial or not... some people are born to lead, some to follow. As in most other communal species, a majority are "workers" with a limited number of "alpha"s at the top

  • How much they pay for these?

I mean, to use it in schools?

  • Contact potholer54 he distributes them for free I believe. If you look at his youtube page it should expain it. :)

  • There a nice 4gb torrent floating around.

  • They are free to use.

  • chip279 gives us the Darwinists' last ditch defense. Now they say there is no such thing as Darwinism. Technically, that may be true. The reigning theory is neo-Darwinism, but it is no more valid than Darwinism and for the same reasons.

  • "The use of hypothetical examples suggests a lack of evidence"

See "ring species" i.e. Larus Gulls or Ensatina escholtzii (species of salamander).

  • @luftigus, that's like trying to insult a cat by calling it a cat. Or an atheist by calling him an atheist. Turning Darwin's name into an insulting label doesn't prove Darwin's theory wrong. It just proves you would rather cling to the beliefs of a bronze-age group of semi-nomadic shepherds rather than accept the mountain of peer-reviewed evidence from thousands upon thousands of researchers.

Call me a "Darwinist" all you like. You're only describing your own fears in doing so.

  • What examples?

  • The use of hypothetical examples suggests a lack of evidence. Indeed, that is the case. The traditional textbook examples have proven invalid. See Chapter 6 of The End of Darwinism.

  • Actually, a Hypothetical Creature is simply easier to control, and thus easier to convey the message.

There are plenty of real examples; as can be seen in the hundreds of videos just here on youtube, even if you want to ignore diving into the vast amounts of Scientific literature(albeit a boring read for most).

  • 1st of all there is NO such thing as darwinism just like theres NO such thing as newtanism, ok

  • "The paper they wrote"? Darwin and Wallace did not write a joint paper. Separate documents were submitted to the Linnean Society. Wallace did not even know Darwin was submitting something.

  • =Darwin and Wallace did not write a joint paper. =

You're right. Well done. After dozens of posts you have finally hit a target.

  • But then you talk about long necks evolving from a need to reach high on the tree for leaves. This implies the giraffe mentioned earlier. If not the giraffe what?

Your horse diagram is another fiction debunked in Windchy's The End of Darwinism.

  • -If not the giraffe what?=

Please watch the video. I explain that I am making up a hypothetical animal. I call it a =hypotheticus=. The idea is to explain the principles of natural selection to people like you who have trouble understanding it. Even 5th graders who watch this video understand that the hypotheticus is not real.

  • You start off with four pictures of giraffes!

As for sexual selection for long necks, how did that get started? In what species? How can you "believe" something so speculative?

  • =You start off with four pictures of giraffes!=

That was in reference to Lamark, not Darwin.

=How can you "believe" something so speculative? =

    I don't.

  • @luftigus You apparently didn't watch the video, or have very limited comprehension skills. . for proof of this I need look no further than the fact that your objections are rather simple despite being presented with a rational thought exercise to begin with.

  • Darwin's giraffe example doesn't work and Stephen Gould tried for many years to get it removed from textbooks. Darwin thought giraffes compete for tree leaves during droughts. Actually during droughts they eat leaves from bushes.

See the book The End of Darwinism by Eugene Windchy.

  • =Darwin's giraffe example doesn't work=

Luftigus, haven't you read anything more recent on evolution than a 150-year old book? Try to keep up to date. Biologists believe giraffes grew longer necks because longer necks are an advantage during male fights. This is an example of sexual selection. BTW I never mentioned giraffes in the video. You are confusing a real animal with a hypothetical one.

  • aww, noones arguing crazy stuff on this video? dam. i bet creationists avoid this video like the plague

  • We are finally learning (too little) about naturalism at my school, and I am going to try to make my teacher let us watch this in a religion class once. This video explains natural selection perfect and easy. Thanks for making it. :)

  • Those ignorant little nitwits at my school didn't understand anything. Maybe you shoud've made a "Natural Selection Made Super-Easy (for retards)" or something.

  • =Maybe you shoud've made a "Natural Selection Made Super-Easy (for retards)"=

I'm planning some videos on this channel that will aim at the intelligence level of 6-year-olds. Sometimes it's necessary to take them one step at a time. Did your classmate follow each ot the steps (heredity, variation, etc.) and if so, at which step did they come unstuck?

  • They probably didn't even understand the language. XD

  • lol.. whats so hard to understand these videos? i tried reading bible ones and got so confused i stoped reading this nonsense..

  • =But what makes that organism know to look like a leaf. is it really just random?=

Sorry, I hit the 'remove' button instead of 'reply'.

In a population of bugs, millions are born all the time, each one different. Colors will be very slightly different because of mutations and other genetic factors that cause variation not much, just marginally. So those which are marginally greener will be less commonly eaten than bugs which are very slightly redder, and stand out a bit more....

  • ...So the next generation will have more green genes and fewer genes of other bright colors. Over thousands of generations the bugs get greener and greener. Same happens with shape.

  • Excellent as before, but a thought occurs: if you ever do a revised version of these videos, you might also want to mention in the end how much horizontal gene transfer contributes to evolution even in multicellular organisms.

  • =you might also want to mention in the end how much horizontal gene transfer contributes to evolution even in multicellular organisms.=

I've been reading about the recent research into this. One of the problems with these videos is that new research will always overtake them.

  • I have an issue with random mutations. It's strange to me that randomness can create better or more efficient life forms through natural selection over long periods of time. It almost seems like a little too much luck is involved or there is something that's not fully understood. By the way I'm not inferring a magical solution, I'm just putting my issue out there.

  • well, a lot more species are extinct than alive today.

evolution creates heaps of random variations, some more complex, some less so. the random variation with the better tools for survival just lives longer, better, and is therefore more likely to produce.

to use a human example, if you gave a bunch of random people random weapons and told them to fight to the death. odds are one that got a gun would win.

  • mathematical calculations show, that even if positive mutations are way more rare than negative ones, they will still be the ones that survive.

try searching videos on evolution simulation for models showing there is no need for luck ;) just big numbers and many generations

  • the mutations will most likely be of no benefit, and sometimes they can be disadvantageous. but, what passes on to develop a pattern is what occurs with the most successful breeders in a given environment. your nose may be larger than either of your parents noses -- thats a mutation. are you going to get laid more often because of it? probably not. will it prevent you from mating? not necessarily.

  • LOL, I love the teenage mutant ninja turtle reference potholer. I would never picture you as a fan of the series. I bet one of your nephews or grand kids made you watch and learn the greatness of TMNT.

  • These videos are more informative and foster a far greater understanding of their subject matter than 90% of the professionally produced shows on Nat Geo and the Science Channel,

  • This is so cool! hey thanks for uploading this video. I'm going to subscribe!

  • to anyone who loves watching these videos as much as i do... think about what has made you become fascinated with learning all this and wanting to watch these videos from potholer and the likes. before i came across these channels i would've never imagined subscribing to a channel to learn about something that in the past my only motivation for learning was because i had an exam. i pretty much know the answer but i want to hear what other people think about it

  • Louisiana just passed a law that protects teachers who encourage "critical thinking" about evolutionary theory. LOL. There was an interview on NPR with one of these teachers who's looking forward to encouraging the critical thinking and he was a stupid hick who said "evolution happens within species, no doubt...but..as far as other species...that's..still out there.." and "there's evidence against evolution.". Good job Louisiana! You're really heading in the right direction! Fucking retards!

  • Hey, but their cooking has no equal in the US!!!!!! so cut some slack to them... preparing meals is an art, they spend all they in the kitchen and have no time to science.. science outside the pots and pans at least... Lais sez les bon temps rouler... they don't give a shit about ID or evolution... that is not needed to make an awesome crawfish etouffee..

  • I find it frustrating when theist say if we have evolved from monkeys why are there still monkeys? Trying to explain a common ancestor is impossible. Im amazed at how many people in my city(TO), never mind the world have an undying need to believe in a supreme being, we are not taught about god in our public school system, but people have a need for a god after their schooling to make them feel comfortable,it's either to justify their self worth or absolve themselves from lifes responsibilities

  • They failed their biology.

  • I know I was venting, and thank you for making light of it, you made me laugh. thanks again for your comment it really did make my day. JJ

  • Thats no hypotheticus, its a lyena.

  • Keep them coming....great video as always!

  • Excellent video potholer, just like the rest.

  • Very nice, thank you.

  • evolution is a lie and we all came from andromedaswake giant space duck :P

  • stills makes more sense than creationism

  • nice video mate

  • great as always.

  • I used the 'looking in a mirror every day' analogy in a debate once, except with Obama instead of Bush.

Thanks, potholer54. 'There's no f$%#ing carbon in it!'

  • Rofl, that quote is fucking priceless.

  • The original cartoon hypotheticus was much cuter. This new critter just looks creepy.

  • I sometimes secretly wish for hell to be real, so that the people that post "first" can burn in hell eternally.

  • Why the fuck wasn't that a part of the 10 commandments? It's a sin if I ever saw one!

  • I'll write the Pope.

  • Awesome, we can finally damn these guys to hell!

  • @brutus149 FIRST

  • Damn my comment was eaten up by youtube... oh well, *5 stars just because potholer54 is awesome*
