@9911aleksey I was referring to the Allied cavalry's performance during the French cavalry assault on the squares. Barbero about the inability for Uxbridge to get any cooperation from the Cav and that they kept behind the squares determined not to get involved with the swarms of Cuirassiers poured over the ridge. I've read accounts of infantry screaming from the squares at the Cav asking them for help. I think the counterattack after D'Erlon's assault took a massive toll on the Brit Cav.
@9911aleksey I think we agree. If we are talking about the Union Brigade and the Households assault on D'Erlons, then it is true there was a Cuirassier units beaten back. But they were countered by the two Cuirassier brigades from Farine and Travers plus the lancers of Jaquinots which delivered heavy losses to the Household and the Union. British cav was Brave and tough, but poorly led and undisciplined as was attested by everyone including Wellington. They were uncontrollable lot.
@9911aleksey There were multiple consecutive assaults on the allied squares and the allied cav only countered sparingly with mixed success. The household only delayed the next attack. Most of the allied cavalry remained in the rear of the squares. Uxbridge tried to get many fo the them to counter, and many outright refused. Many Allied soldiers recalled years later how disappointed they were in their cavalry as they felt they received no help.
@9911aleksey Not saying that the Household Cav did not push the Cuirassiers back, but the Household was fresh at that time and the French just re-grouped and came back.. In addition, the majority of Allied cavalry allowed the French cavalry to meander and harrass the allied squares with impunity for a very long time. There is even reports of Allied infantry cursing the Allied cavalry for doing nothing as they stayed back.
@9911aleksey Not sure where you got your info, but your analysis is incorrect. The Allied Cavalry were no match for French Cavalry at Waterloo, much less British as was confirmed by Wellingtons own testimony. When the French charged the allied squares the Allied Cavalry did pratically nothing as they were frightened to even engage the French Cuirassiers. And when they did they were cut to pieces! The Alllied infantry saved that situation not Allied cavalry. Read "Battle" by Alessandro Barbero
Russia and England bought Europe another 100 years. In the end, Napoleon's dream has triumphed and the Old Europe is dead. Only you don't make a new Europe just because a Corsican upstart thinks it is doable. Old Europe is dead and with it Europe as a whole. We are dying slowly reliving our past glories, but no new glories will come. And on saturday, I will think of a green field where 196 years ago, my Old Europe had won one of its last victories. Against the Corsican upstart.
@horselips: Islam is not the true enemy of Europe. Or better put, not the true danger. Europe has thrived with Islam on its door for 1000 years. The true enemy is egalitarianism and humanism, the "values" promoted by the French Revolution, by Napoleon and by today's democracies. Because of them, Europe is rotten from the inside and will succumb to Islam. The destruction of aristocracy and elites, the destruction of our traditions, championed by Revolutionary France, was the beginning of our doom
If only Napoleon had aimed the Grand Armee at the Ottomans instead of Russia. Already having France, Spain and Italy, the reconquest of the Balkans, Anatolia, the Holy Land and North Africa would have been a cinch - and the Russians and the rest of Christian Europe would have helped him. Napoleon could have truly restored the Roman Empire, and destroyed Islam in the process. Now, Islam is destroying France and Europe. Europeans are amazingly stupid - never able to focus on their true enemies.
@horselips He invaded Russia in 1812 because the Russians had tried to invade Poland in 1811 and then tried to get him to hand it to them on a plate. Cf Vincent Cronin's "Napoleon", Ch20 The Road to Moscow, p309 HarperCollins, 1994 edition. Attacking his ally the Ottoman Empire was not in his interest or that of Europe. He had already planned a joint European-Russian assault on India to force London to make peace but the Tsar had other plans, financed by the British Empire (to dominate Europe)
@NapoleonCalland- I too know Napoleonic history & you are right & Cronin is a good source. I find fault with considering the Ottomans allies - they were far more passive than active against France's enemies. A large-scale Ottoman second front against Austria might have made a difference at Leipzig. My post is simply a "what if" born of "wishful thinking." You know - "If the South had won the Civil War" kinda thing. A 19th Century "Crusade" would have united Europe more than anything else tried.
no wellington was a little english shopkeepr who was too scared to fight french alone-always he needed someothers pwoer help .napoleon even defeated that english bastard wqellington in siege of paris when napolean mustered the french auxillaries after he escaped from the captivity and relived french capital of english bastards mashinations and wellington fled like a coward he was and like coward english pairate cum shopkeeprs race always are.
@zenoist2, Napoleon has always been a great commander, but he wasn't as aggressive and smart in battle like he used to be in his earlier years.
Wellington is a great leader, but you horribly overestimate his abilities. It's not exaggerating to say that Napoleon is better than Wellington for a variety of reasons.
@MaxRWF For god sake 2 things, one it was BRITAIN NOT ENGLAND and also we bloody payed our fair share in blood just we were smart about what we did e.g. 1400 Troops vs 4500 and we won in the first volley....
Actually, the British did the least possible they could during these wars. Never heard about the "Golden Cavalry of St George" ? In fact, the British would never have disembarked in Spain or in Belgium if these territories weren't already largely controlled by their allies. Even at Waterloo the British didn't count for more than 25% of the allied forces.
@MaxRWF Numbers do not matter for a start >.>,also of course we would never had ventured that deep into enenmy territory, honestly who would? It would have been near suicide, what i am trying to say is we made one of the biggest contributions in battle without actally commiting many men.
napoleaon was the greatest general of the westenr world in last 2000 years. he was a great man too. only mistake he did was not to attacke ngland and kill the english race-instead he attacked Russia and destroyed 95% of his grand army. napleaon shopudl have attacked and burn england so that the world wouldntohave to bear the curse of having english race on the earth. we can still do it by making europe stang against enligsh parsite shopkeeprs .
@sticky4rod napoleons great mistake was fighting against Wellington.
He should have bowed down before his superioirity but the little bald headed corsican had to persist with his sadly mistaken beleif he was a good general.
he wasn't.
Stamping his feet and throwing his hat to the ground in a temper doesnt change the fact he was totally outclassed.
Wellington beat the French in every single battle he fought and never lost a battle unlike Naploeon.
Wellington was defeated several times in Sapin by Masséna. Wellington LOST Waterloo, Blucher won. Do you know what remained of the "English" (with 60% of Germans in their ranks) army? The Welsh corps et the Guard. The cavalry was destroyed, the KGL fled, the others surrendered or escaped. When the Prussians arrived, the French disbanded, after 20 years of war they had had enough
@zenoist2 wellington was a fucking gay aristocrat who fought with difficulties despite the precious help of spanish guerilla against the weak french army of spain which was not the "grand army" who was fighting in eastern europe some more serious ennemies than the brits (like the russians austrians and prussians)... sorry but britain was really good at sea, and for money, but was really shy on land (remember toulon and quiberon landing when the brits were wiped out by french patriots...)

Wellington was never Napoleon's superior or even an equal. Napoleon won far more victories than Wellington. You make it sound as if Wellington defeated Napoleon by himself which is laughable, even a twelve year old would know that is false.

Les quelques connaissances que je compte sur l'île refusent catégoriquement qu'on considère la Corse comme italienne.
so did the imperial guard the cuirassers and in fact most of the french army. I must admit that the cuirassers and the imperial guard were fine soldiers. it was unfortunate ney was so ... unpredictable in that battle, they say its "shellshock" or the 19th century equivelant, from the russian war.
Ney did manage to get most of the cavalry killed in a daft charge without infantry support and gruchee (pardon the spelling) didnt even turn up with half the army, We might have lost if they had.
That's what most of those "documentaries" portray. In reality, it was different. The battle was made up of tones of complicated events. After the cavalry charge, Ney brought a well-supported combination of cavalry, infantry, horse artillery to attack Wellington's flank. The squadrons of curassiers who survived the charge forced the allies to remain in squares while his horse-artillery blasted them in close range. This was when Ney requested reinforcements.
but, of course, Napoleon was busy committing his Young Guard to attack the Bluchers' Prussians under Bulow at Plancenoit. Ney is so underrated in those "bullshit documentaries". In fact, when he captured La Haye Saint, he again brought horse-artillery there to blast the Allied squares. In the end, the Inniskillings literally lay finished in squares. However, the firmness of the Allied, British infantry was quite admirable and it's true that Ney never managed to break through the Allied centre.
you're right sorry I was simplyfying the intricate too much. I know Ney was a fine commander anyway but after seeing all his men die of cold on the russian front must have affected him somehow. You also have to admit he was a tad unpredictable. He was also very brave isnt it true that he had five horses shot from under him in the charge and still carried on? anyway I still have to peg some of the blame for Napoleon losing on Ney even if he did commit himself admirably in the rest of the combat.
well he was the the latter parts of the conflict I think. Also I do agree whit you about the documentaries as they are rather one sided especially these over romanticised American ones. Ney also could have attacked quicker at quatre bras but even so he probably does recieve far more criticism than he should. He fought well enough at Ligny and other battles including at Waterloo for a substantial amount of the conflict

Belle vidéo ! Et pour info à zeerot53, les hussards se sont illustrés à la bataille de Wagrame en 1809 en mettant en déroute l'armée autrichienne.

Did'nt they break out of sqaure formation in the great cuirassier cavalry charge?
Haza119 2 years ago
so did the imperial guard the cuirassers and in fact most of the french army.

Maréchal Grouchy is also a bit guilty

That's what most of those "documentaries" portray. In reality, it was different. The battle was made up of tones of complicated events. After the cavalry charge, Ney brought a well-supported combination of cavalry, infantry, horse artillery to attack Wellington's flank. The squadrons of curassiers who survived the charge forced the allies to remain in squares while his horse-artillery blasted them in close range. This was when Ney requested reinforcements.
(from "Atlas of Napoleonic Wars")

but, of course, Napoleon was busy committing his Young Guard to attack the Bluchers' Prussians under Bulow at Plancenoit.

He was also very brave isnt it true that he had five horses shot from under him in the charge and still carried on? anyway I still have to peg some of the blame for Napoleon losing on Ney even if he did commit himself admirably in the rest of the combat.
wedge0005 2 years ago
well he was the the latter parts of the conflict I think.
