@yankeesuperstar All of this skills/elements are used into most western music, such as flamenco, jazz, pop. Music colleges use classical music as the main teaching tool because its the genre that covers most difficulties. If you can play the most complicated compositions by the great classical composers, chances are most of the non classical pieces will be a piece of cake for you.
@yankeesuperstar Make sure you study at a school so that you get the whole training. Some of the skills that a musician graduated from a music college get are: being able to hear music by just watching the score, recognizing the notes being played and their relationships understanding how music is built, from the overtones that form a single note to the huge harmonic, polifonic and rhytmic elements that are used in the great classical compositions... There aren't any misteries left...
"In classical guitar they are so concerned about the tone that they might neglect the rhythm"... Seriously! Classical musicians get 10+ years of rhythm training, to the point in which they can perform almost any rhythm from any type of music... Flamenco is just another (very nice) style in the repertoire of a classical trained musician. Its sad most Flamenco guitar players don't get that training and therefore can't appreciate the depth, passion and perfection that other styles of music have.
@altazorX thats informative, thanks. I'm studying classical now, yet would like to get into flamenco in the future. What do you think? Does studying classical give someone a good base?
In the real flamenco, i mean in the south of spain (andalucia) or Paco de Lucia style, Picado is playing with the nail and flesh, using together it make that particular sound of Flamenco! Even for Alzapua, the thumb isn't use like a mediator. Alzapua and this sort of picado are playing "apoyado", sorry i can't explain it well i'm spanish but you can looking for this word.
@hendrixkixas I mean the sound is made with the nail and the skin of the fingers together, not only nail like in classical. Many people think you must have very long nails but it's wrong except thumb nail.
@hendrixkixas It's not easy to answer because each one have his own feeling, hands are different, but usely (except Tumb and the last finger (french and spanish = Auriculaire/Aurirular) about 2 mm only. I havn't camera video yet (i'll get one soon) i will show the different sounds and i will talk about others things to know in Flamenco guitar i didn't see (for the moment) on You Tube.
Apologies for my ignorance, but is there a difference between the picado style and the style of strumming generally used by most bass players in modern music?
it depends but most flamenco guitarists are just flesh, but for alzapua is mistly the thumb nail =) I prefer alzapua more then picados, but i sdo alot of picados, i just love alzapua though lol =)
im learning flamenco from a book and cd, and after i learn a solo i upload it, but i also post lesson videos so everyone else can learn to play it too!

@STORM13NOTE What do you mean with the nail and flesh?
hendrixkixas 1 year ago
@hendrixkixas
By flesh, he means fingertip. The nail is your fingernail.
The way he says it, you should be touching the string with your fingertip before plucking it with your fingernail.

Excellent lesson Mario.
Question: When one is using the picado technique to go from the 6th string to the 1st, does it also need to be a rest stroke?
Great job! (a picado excercise video would be superb!)
atgblue1 3 years ago
If you play the sixth string the free stroke, if you notice it is done in this video also.
sharif77 3 years ago
Sorry for the typo, the free stroke is used for the sixth string.
sharif77 3 years ago
Thanks for the info mate. Much appreciated.
ps: if you know of a good tune that uses the picado, I'd love to see it and learn it!!
