Barry is my play cousin as we share the same last name. We exchaned emails while he was Germany. We both sprechen Deutch :-) ang got a laugh as we started responding to each other in German. i'm going to check him out when he comes to the east coast.
I had the opportnuity to see Barry Finnety yesterday evening in an jazz club in my hometown in Hamburg with an exellent german Side group; Barry was all beyond.
They always sounded great. Love Joe and Wilton on their respective instruments. I got to see them during the late eighties and early nineties. Great show and great people.
I loved these guys in the 70's and theres no mistaking that keyboard with joe sample, whos music I love dearly today....what a talented bunch of guys !
I was a DJ in the 70's working at clubs around the world and this is my ALL TIME favorite Tune.So much so that I left instruction for this record to be played at my funeral as I exit the world forever. AWESOME!!!!!!!
i became a crusaders fan in 1973........i have 12 albums, with the best being there red cover double album, mostly recorded live.wilton n stix groove, with larry carlton
When we talk about Fusion, we are really talking about the style of music that originated with Miles Davis on his Bitches Brew album and continued with groups like the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, and Weather Report. SpyroGyra and Pat Metheny fall more into the Soft Jazz category, although Metheny straddles the space between traditional Jazz and Soft Jazz.
To wit, this kind of music (soul/R&B jazz) has more in common with--and actually provided the seeds for what came to be known as--"smooth jazz"--a form of music whose foundation is primarily soul jazz of the '70s (George Benson, Grover Washington Jr., Turrentine, the Crusaders, etc.), as opposed to fusion groups like Metheny, Weather Report, etc.
Listen to Stix...he is pushing that hi-hat in front of the beat while laying back on the snare...I hope all of you young drummers learn how to play "pocket drums" like this and you will never be without a gig.
@kax61 fusion? More like ultimate soul/R&B jazz group. when i think of "fusion" i think of groups like spyro gyra and metheny. these guys played/toured w/ R&B singer Randy Crawford and i would not classify them as fusion...
@saxophile1 Aaaw.....it sounds like you're not really familiair with fusion music. Have a listen to some of the Crusaders' seventies albums like e.g. 'Those Southern Knights' as well as 'Free As The Wind'. That's definitely fusion, no question about it.
@kax61 I can see how u might think this given the time period, but there was plenty of other soul jazz like the Crusaders' on the radio at the time--like the disco-laced soul jazz of Stanely Turrentine; & I would not call Stanley T's music--which has much more in common w/ the Crusaders than Spyro Gyra (a true fusion group)--"fusion" by any stretch. It's too souful, too funky for that label, which, though started by Miles, I've always considered to be mainly a white style listened to by whites.
Boy ...This reminds me of waking up back in the day to NYC Radio Jocky Ken "Spider" Webb!! You just can't get music like this anymore!!! Please bring back choice of musical instruments to Public School!!!!
@aholmes99 Hell yeah old school friend I too grew up with Ken Spider Webb & the Frankie Crocker Family WBLS 107.5 etc. etc. We can be here for hours just talking about quality artists & radio djs...YOU SAID IT NEED I SAY MORE!!
@port2344chester You Know it! Going to "Jack's Nest" Soul Food (one & two), seeing Frankie "Hollywood" Crocker greasing down near the Juke Box at Jack's Nest in NYC. Hank Spann and Ken Webb on the radio playing "Tomorrow" by The Brothers Johnson...DJ words of wisdom... "Every Brother Ain't a Brother!" and "A Grown Man in Sneakers, Ain't doing nothing but sneakin' around!" Those were the days!!!
Boy ...This reminds me of waking up back in the day to NYC Radio Jocky Ken "Spider" Webb!! You just can't get music like this anymore!!! Please bring back choice of musical instruments to Public School!!!!
My brother-in-law introduced me to the Crusaders when I was 17....feel in love with their music immeditely and Joe Sample as he continued with his solo career. His DC with Lalah Hathaway (Donnie Hathaway's daughter) is another expression of endless talent.
@goUnitas19 I too was in Texas around this time period. Lackland AFB, San Antonio in 1974 after 3 yrs. overseas (2 in Korea and 1 in Japan) and in 1976 called back to Korea from Lackland due to an incident at the DMZ involving North & South when 1 of our officers was killed during a "tree trimming expedition" to see the outpost whose view was being blocked by a tree limb. And I took my Crusader's albums with me. Keeping that same old feeling with me along the way.
Good summer song!!!!! Remember growing up, running the streets...we carried a portable 8 track player a bunch of 8 tracks....this was one of them! Love the Crusaders....Spiral was one of their most awesome songs as well!
@FunkInDaPocket47 Great anytime song. Would you believe that in my recording studio I still have not 1 but 2 8-Track recorders? And yes, I do still have some 8-Tracks floating around. Along with a Tascam 24B 4-Track Reel to Reel recorders (2 each). Hooked up to a Phase Linear Quad (or 4) channel Pre-Amp and Sequential Circuits (maker's of Prophet 5 keyboard) rack mount EFX unit including Parametric EQ and running out of 2 pairs of speaker's I built myself. BTW, I still have 7 quad LP's.
@Lonewolf36 Awesome, sounds like its a pretty elaborate set up! What you have a truly a far cry from the simple 8 track system we had :) It is apparent that you are a true music lover and this song is one that draws you in and takes you back!!!!
@FunkInDaPocket47 If you look over Joe Samples right shoulder about the 34 sec mark you will see some Sequential Circuits units that he is using in this performance. I so enjoy seeing artists today still using what originated much and many of todays instruments. Even in George Dukes band and George himself using Sequential Circuits gear. The originators of the synths. I love it. But I am an OG musician muyself. Have you checked out my latest band, Funkanauts? We are here also.
@Lonewolf36 I agree, these folks are true innovators! They created and played some of the best music ever recorded! I will definitely take a look at your band! Thanks for the information!
@FunkInDaPocket47 Thanks, I have spent many years and many miles to get what I have. As a musician & recording & live sound man there is gear that I have come to love over the years whether OG or New, what works works. As band manager to the Funkanauts, as well as owning our own label, we find business wise to keep it close to the vest is best. Let me know if you enjoy what you hear from the Funkanauts and I will try to post a few live videos within the next week.
@soulasismusic Why yes you are correct. With my failing eyesight I see it more clearly as I look closer. The Sequential Circuits gear and Moog so closely resembled each other in so many ways. My last prohpet 5 was destroyed 6 yrs. ago by a not so close friend when he drunkenly wasted a gallon of house paint all over and inside the Prophet and in his attempts to clean it all up with paint thinner. Thanks for pointing this out to myself and all of us.
This one of my favorite tracks off the Southern Knights LP. This live version is really good, but it's not the same without Wayne Henderson's trombone.....
Yes. Barry Finnerty on guitar and, like someone said before, a very underrated player. Love his tone and melodic sense, and excellent approach to rhythm guitar.
Spending the 70's in my 20's and into my 30's I loved the Crusaders. I always put them into my favorite catagory along with Gino Vanelli, The Brecker Brothers, Return To Forever, Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds and WAR into my cruisin music in what ever car I had at the time. My 1970 Hemi Challenger, 70 Corvette, 73Corvette, 74 Trans Am or 75 Rallye Sport Camaro. How about Bob James 1, 2 ,3 etc? The Crusaders got me thru many nights on the strip. Thanks for posting.
@bdonnici ah yes, what an album. Listening to this as I awake this morning, the notes just floated thru my mind. Every crystal clear note from the drums to the bass, the keys, the sax and the rest. Sounds just as delicious today as it did way back then. Todays artists, I am surprised to find some great music such as in Down To The Bone's music, I love them now. Have you checked them out?
I just saw your post here and I have to agree on all points! That's my jazz pedigree almost to a "T". Farandole from Bob James Two has some of the sickest solos ever recorded! Hubert Laws' flute solos just blow me away! Great memories on all those bands!
@cdbtoo Got a notice about your comment to mine and I agree Farandole is classy. Headed in the rocky / Jazzy direction I vividly recall enjoying Smiling Phases by Blood, Sweat & Tears, along with anything else by BS&T. Must see if that is on here.
