We are fishing the bottom about 12 miles off shore. Over the years, I have found that if you target spots where the bottom is at about 240 feet, you will do well.
You can find Halibut in all depths of water - I once got a 70 pounder after giving up on Halibut and attempting to get a Lingcod in close to a small island where the dropoff went down to 70 feet.
Over the last few weeks, there have been lots of Halibut caught along the surfline here in the Tahsis area.
@MrVideowatcher5000 Hi Michael! The Penn 345 has 130# test T.U.F line on it. It's nice to work with, but the 80# line is better suited for Halibut fishing off the WCVI. It's thinner and cuts through the water better so that it doesn't drift away from the boat and stays on the bottom better.
135# TUF line on the 345. I use 90# on my 330gti which I think works better. It's strong enough, and it cuts the water better so that it stays under the boat and not out at 45 degrees or more when drifting.
Is it all smaller fish in no current where this was filmed? just wondering because the weights are fairly small and the rods look like 50-60# rods at most. Still a good workout for the old guy though, 250' is a lot of winding from that depth.
Thanks for the comment! This was filmed about 12 miles off-shore from Esperanza Inlet. This was an exceptional day for drifting for Halibut. The following day we stuck closer to Nootka Island and trolled for Salmon - though we still caught a few Halibut. Check the "Fishing with Friends" video. We had a huge bunch of small Chicken Halibut last year. So many that we were catching them while trolling at 80' in 180' of water.
We have to say that fishing in Tahsis is the best. We caught losts of fish last summer, including Halibut, Ling Cod, Coho, Sea Bass and a few really nice BIG Springs.
We won't do a charter in Vancouver again because the last 3 times resulted in NO FISH.
If you are looking for an excellent fishing trip, we highly recommend trying Tahsis & Jim's Fishing Charters.
Yes, Halibut are great eating, especially when you get them fresh like this. Most Halibut in the stores has been frozen or is several days old when they do have it fresh, in season.
The real trick is to keep it chilled as soon as you catch it, otherwise it can become tough and chalky. Always have ice when Halibut fishing, and bleed them right away.
Great vidio; some pretty amazing water for the west coast...Thasis is still a bit of a town I am guessing....?? Some nice butts you guys hooked; bet they were GREAT eating tooo
