Even though VH didn't exist when this was video was done, they did not want it to be made. The company did not want to be sued and had to play it as safe, which meant no original VH music. While this limits the documentary there is still a ton of great stuff that has never turned up elsewhere, namely original bass player Mark Stone, as well as others who were close to the band and saw them in the earliest days. It's flawed but still essential for any hardcore VH fan.
Eddie aint no underrated. He was best hardrock quitarist of 80's. And he's in top 3 of best quitarist of all time, perhaps number 1... Technically he is best. This is MY top 3 quitarist list: 1st eddie van halen, 2nd angus young, 3rd ace frehley. And i would preciate that no one would start bitchin about that list and who should be number 1 or 2. Eddie and angus are best, i know that some people would place 10 guitarist before ace, but he is my idol and th reason i started play quitar. And he a
In my oppinion eddie is under rated,he came after clapton beck, paige hendrix,he was influenced by them and then some how managed to sound totaly origional .They asked les paul back in 1977 what he thought of the current crop of players, and he said that although they were good nobody really stoodout. That all changed 3 months later. Frank zappa said that he reinvented the guitar, which was right He literally advanced the sound of the instrument 10 years overnight.
Alex's flaming gong wasn't originally his idea..it was one of his heroes and probably his biggest influence, which was the master himself, John Bonham's..
Eddie is a dick period! He fucking thinks he is God. all he did new and inovative with the guitar is the ftreboard finger tapping; name something else that he did dynamic that every other great guitar player before him did not do: Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Blackmore, Jeff Beck, The guiatr players from Skynerd; Allen Collins and Steve Gaines, Gary Rossignton, Metcalf, etc. Go ahead, name one thing!
@DeMarkieSade name 1 thing? ill name 5 or 6, every guitar you see with the bridge pick up slanted diagonally? that was eddie, before him no guitars had that! oh and by the way he lost out on millions of dollars on that idea cause he never pateneted it! guitars with the pick up screwed straight into the body of the guitar? YEAH EDDIE DID THAT TO! before that all guitars had floating pick ups on springs! eddie was the 1st gitarist to really screw around with the volume knob to.......
@DeMarkieSade nobody ever used the volume knob to create sounds before him! eddie installed a fake pick up in the neck position cause he saw the big companies selling axes modeled after his guitar with just 1 pick up in the bridge position, so he put the fake one in and sure as shit the manafacturers started selling copies with the neck pick up even though IT DIDNT WORK!!! before eddie nobody used the whammy bar like him because before eddie you couldnt use the whammy without the guitar........
@DeMarkieSade going way the fuck out of tune, cause floyd rose wasnt around then, so eddie put stronger strings in the back and then ADDED an extra 1 so it would bounce back better! ad of course the finger tapping, yeah i know he didnt start it, blackmore did, but before eddie guys like blackmore would just tap a note here or there but eddie used it like he was playing a piano and even blackmore admits he was blown away, check out an interview with him in guitar magazine in 1988,...........
@DeMarkieSade he rewired his marshal head so he could add extra tubes so the amp was way more powerful and had longer sustain! hes the only guitarist ive ever heard of that had the SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM in washigton DC ask for his guitar to put in theyre museum cause they said that guitar has been deemed CULTURALLY AND HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT!! i dont see them asking BLACKMORE, CLAPTON, or any other guy for something like that!!! THATS JUST THE START, YOU GOT NO CLUE WHATYOR TALKING ABOUT!
@metemi I don't think they had copyright permission. Ed is a dick about that stuff, and he would always decline VH1 requests, so thats why VH1 left them out of 7 stages of rock. Van Halen and Eddie's guitar molded the 80s, everyone copied him, and VH1 never mentioned Van Halen at all.

@DeMarkieSade I've never heard him claim that he is as amazing as he clearly is.
People know that all these late 60's Blues Rock guitar players did a shitload of noises but Eddie does his own thing with it.

@DeMarkieSade he didnt exactly invent tapping either, i prefer george lynchs early tapping stuff

@metemi Yes, I would like to have heard more tunes, especially "You Really Got Me" since Ray Davies liked it, too.

@coltsuperocean10 Ray Davies liked VH's rendition of his own tune. Please save your outrage for more important issues and appropriate targets.
