  • thanks. i just started to learn bass and this helped alot :)

  • You are a good person for taking the time and recording this lesson for others to watch and learn for free. Thank you very much.

  • Your a very good teacher, God Bless

  • love this vid, thanks!

  • You have a great way of explaining it in a straight forward and simple way. Thanks Jocat. :o)

  • I appreciate people like you taking the time to help us beginners to learn the bass better.I am a drummer of 40+ yrs and a keyboard player of 30+ yrs.For me it wasn't as hard to learn the frets because I already know the keyboard and the progression of each key.But I am going to watch your lessons to improve my beginner's skills on the bass.I have been teaching/playing myself for about 2 1/2 yrs,but still got a long way to go.I will put up a comment as I watch to share my progress from your vids

  • This is the best video I have seen that is easy for a beginner to learn you take it slow so we can follow thank you so much!!!

  • Hello! Love your explanation on the notes! Just picked up the bass guitar like today! :D Thank you for explaning! :D

  • this is the only vid i can follow along with thank u

  • Helpful for my noob ness thx much

  • Very helpful!!!

  • wauw! from all the videos I've seen, you are the only one who explained the note scale. thank you very much!

  • Thanks for the help man. All these videos have helped me play me Bass... Hi 5 you ledgend :D

  • bro you are the best teacher ever!!! lord no

  • Very helpfull cheers

  • @jocat2008 If you were listening, he never said there was a whole step between B & C and E & F, he just said there is no such thing as B# and E#. So from E we move one fret to F (no B#) and from B we move on fret to C (no B#).

Before we laugh at this video, please explain your version of the scales when moving from B to C and E to F.

  • Holy crap! Thank You!

  • Thank you so much for turning the light on for me. I was so confused about all the notes on the fret board but you helped me understand it so easily. You are an appreciated, great teacher. Thanks again

  • For those of you that might be confused on why there is no E sharp or B sharp, it is because E-F are natural half tones and B-C are natural half tones. So, instead of an E#(sharp) it would automatically go to F.

  • This really helped me!!

  • on the 12 fret is it the same for 6 string acoustic guitars

  • Wow, what you shared was awesome and quite simple for me since I am a beginner. However I have a 5 string bass guitar which was given to me as a gift. I really enjoy learning what you share. I assume that I can use this lesson as well for my guitar. Do you have any advice for me as far as keeping it simple in learning the 5 string? Also do you a lesson on flats, scales, and chords? It would be so helpful. Once again thanks!

  • Thank you!! Been playing for about a year but never really focused on actually knowing the fretboard because honestly some videos and books make it seem extra complicated, your video is simple enough to understand but its more than just "fret 1 is F, 2 is F#, 3 is G..."

  • Why would anyone dislike this video? It's very helpful!

  • This was the best for learning the fretboard. Wish you would continue these beginners lessons, because the other "teachers" jump ahead too fast. Thanks.

  • That was very helpful jocat. Thanks for helping us beginners.

  • Great teacher thanks for the video !!!

  • Great video, this guy inspired me to buying a bass!!! Great teacher.

  • this is fucken helpfull thanks make more

  • 24 frets mine has 20 but thats cos mine is cheap probably i dunno

  • I wanted to say that no matter what anyone says, this video is very helpful. I play drums professionally, and have had a bass guitar for a while. The relationship between drums and bass is a must. So deciding to learn what the theory, musically, as well as the fundamentals behind it, is quite inspiring. Not to mention that someone is not just playing something and expecting miracles to happen within a 5 minute lesson. You taking the time to go through each note w/ explanation says alot. Tks!

  • if someone said play G would it make a difference which G?

  • very heplful ! well done on the video :)

  • simple and clear explanation. Nice job, from a beginner bassist. Thanks!

  • Great vid

  • i just started playing bass, and im not that good. ive looked all over youtube to help me learn techniques and familiarize myself with the bass. your video that i have just watched is basically the ONLY video that has helped me. keep it man. i look forward to learning more

  • UH...NO.......1/2 step between B & C, same for E & F. Dont know where you learned your theory bro, but try telling someone your moving a whole step from B to C and they might laugh at you a bit. I might suggest a scale book or a chord poster from wal-mart. They're cheap, but accurate. Good luck.

    Be Careful With Your Theory.

  • @jocat2008 I learned that in my first bass guitar lesson! someone needs a little help there, lol! i completely agree with you!

    Thanks Dude.

  • everyone wants guitar but i think i am gonna start with bass ty for the vid

  • im gunna have to watch this vid about 5 times to remember all this, and look at pictures of all the frets and stuff, im not a good rememberer, but i should remember this. Thanx dude.

  • so flats are basically a half step lower, like instead of F# it would be G flat?

  • Thank you so much!!!!! I think I finally get it.

  • This is very helpful!

My first bass comes in next week, but I thought I would get started...

You are very good at teaching....

  • Real simple man. Thanks a heap! Now to check out your other vids

  • Please make more videos. I just bought a bass guitar and you're a good teacher. What happens after I know the names of the strings and notes? Where do I take it from there?

  • i remember the names of the notes by this way:(E)ddie (A)te (D)ynamite (G)oodbye

  • The best lesson i have seen on learning the fret board for BASS guitar, you are the best, thank you sooooooo much.

  • are the cords still the same if ur in a drop b tuning?

  • watch?v=3ijj2Bk2zIY

  • aw man that was really helpful! i had no idea how to learn the strings and this video was perfect! thumbs up!

  • watch?v=67qfvXNK2vA

  • Thanks for your good info. I want to learn bass guitar. How to find a good bass guitar to start with ?

  • thanks a lot man

  • this is incredible !! ever since they close music programs in school i've been wanting to learn the notes in the bass, no money for a teacher $50 per hour in NYC... well thank you very much hombre !! grasias !!

  • This is the simplest, yet best explanation of the chords I have ever heard/ seen. My guitar teacher was pretty good, but there is something about the direct and "keep it simple" attitude of jocat which shows that he is genuinely trying to teach us the basics and is not just here to show off his guitar skills. Thanks a lot, this has helped to cement my concepts very well as I am getting back to guitar playing after 1 year.

  • awesome vid :) thanks

  • very helpful video

  • Thanks this totally helped. I am the lead singer in a band, but have ALWAYS wanted to learn the bass for 3 pc. groups etc. You made it easy to understand the concept.

  • yay - someone teaching the notes! finally! thanks!

  • I learnt something today - thanks dude

  • One fact i learned, the more mathmatically inclined you are the easier it is to pick up the concept of music. Vice versa. Ive always struggled with math. Ive been playing my guitar off & on for years and i still dont have the fretboard even halfway memorized. I still have to stop & think which string im playing. Only a person who has problems w/ math & numbers can relate to what im saying. And yet i accel in mechanics, computers & art. I do understand this lesson. But its never become automatic.

  • Just ordered my first bass and amp - this first basic lession was extremely helpful! Thank you

  • Awesome. I'm a beginner an have struggled to learn the notes. This makes it so easy! Thank you, Thank you. You speak well even for a canadian to hear!

  • This was one of the best lesson for beginner to learn to understand the fretboard that I've found. Thanks!

  • Mr jocat ur da best, ur lessons are piece easy to understand please post more i love it

  • omg. thank you. so easy for me right now.

  • I've been playing bass for 11 years and never really trained myself to learn each note on the fretboard by heart.. this easy exercise is gonna help me a lot. Thanks!!!

  • Cheers...That was a fantastic clip, you have a great teaching style and I am feeling more confident in my learning. hope for more soon.

  • Wow, dude... you don't screw around; you were -very- concise in your explanations.

    Thank you

  • Wow thank u so much I had no idea what the notes were before the video is a big help!

  • @conversescooby i was the exact same, great help! 5/5

  • THANK YOU!! you helped my husband and son so MUCH!! you're very encouraging and keep it simple, thank you!!!!

  • thanks dude that helps allot i have been playing for three days and its helped :)

  • thanks alot for posting this i really took away from it. I know my bass about 10 times better than i did.

  • you legend i been playing notes at random hopeing they sound good not knowing what they are for 2 years! lol thank for the knowledge dude

  • Thanks for the help buddy. 40 and just starting with my 11 year old and writing again. You really explained it the way it should be explained. Shane Lane

  • What kind of bass do you recommend for a beginner??

  • Awesome man! It is my second day with a bass, it is well explained, like must be for the beginners like me.....Thank you! Great work!!

  • Thanks sooo much God Bless

  • I will teach on both saharps and flats. I like to introduce one at a time to avoid confusion. These videos are for people who know nothing, no sharps, no flats, no notes, nothing. Try to bare with me, I promise things are gonna get more advanced.

  • @jocat2008 I can't begin to thank you enough for these videos. I am 42, just picking up the bass guitar after a lifelong desire to do so. I didn't know WHERE to begin, but thanks to you, your videos give me a starting point that I can actually absorb and practice. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  • I'm just curious why you're saying A# instead of Bb, I know you said you'll cover flats in another vid. but it could get confusing for some.

  • It really the same thing. It just depend on which way you are walking the scale.

  • @luvmycorso

here's an olive branch, lets start this again.

  • sounds good

  • @luvmycorso

when you go up the scale it's sharp. When you go down you call it flat. But it's actually impossible to get a real sharp or a real flat on the guitar or piano because the way they work. A musical note is divided in 9 comas, 5 up it's sharp, 5 down it's flat. So they are basically the same on these instruments. An instrument where you can go sharp or flat on a note it's violin.

  • Major props for this.

  • Thanks Joecat...you're a very good instructor. You make it very understandable

  • Sixpounder37 flats are simple there the same as sharps just another way of saying them. They are one note lower then the note above them. For example, an a sharp is simply a b flat and an f sharp is just a g flat

  • You're amazing. You're the first teacher/player that gives me the feeling that it's not weird to be totally rubbish in the beginning. I'm now even more excited about learning to play the bass guitar, and I have to thank you for that.

  • Nice lessson, A real good introduction for noobs. Are you going to post a lesson about the flat notes?

  • Amazing video. Just got an Aria LBB-DLX bass. I don't know jack shit about music or guitars but i really want to learn. After watching this, i've now got all the notes on my fretboard down.

Thanks SO much Joe! If i lived in the US, i'd DEFINITELY come to you for lessons. You make this stuff so easy to comprehend.

Also, any chance of more bass tutorials?

  • Glad it helped. I posted these videos almost a year ago. I have made some new ones that I'll put up very soon. Keep watchin!

  • Absolutely man! If you can maybe do a video on staying in the pocket or grooves that would be extremely helpful. Or maybe even picking excercises? I really like how you explain things.

  • Thanks man. That's the most lucid description of the fretboard for beginners I've ever seen. Particularly helpful for me, as I'm a left hander playing a right handed bass.

  • actually there is a such thing as B sharp and E sharp its just used for reading music thats all and its easier to understand on piano all sharp means is to raise the note up a half step and flat is lowering a half

  • With begginers, I try to give the least amount of info in order to not confuse them. True, there may be a B sharp chord, but in music theory we never call a B sharp NOTE a B sharp, we call it "C"
