@Misel982001 The word Ignorant means someone who is not willing to learn. You make your own argument moot. "Stupid guys try to explain everything" then "Why dont you go learn something" Are you saying the only smart people are those who only know a reasonable ammount? Questions are always good...answers are seldom so. Answers can be wrong but a question never is.
@ShelvedGamer great quote mate.I've extensively study cosmology and for my part I am pretty sure that there is God. Many people accuse him with ridiculous arguments but non of them has the knowledge to explain most aspects of our life and the universe.

I doubt many religious people can keep focus until the end of this video. Their minds go into a sorry frenzy just as soon as they get any whiff of reality. They shut down and start scrambling for rationalizations. Desperate. Afraid. Angry. MURDEROUS. NONONO. Kind. Praying. Meek. "Lord give me strength." You damn atheists r goin ta hell!!!!
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexuality and homosexuality. Even non-religious people know this.
The homosexual agenda is not good for anyone, including those who consider themselves "gay".
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have successfuly framed themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
respect for everyone peeps, just because Fry makes a good point here, and is perfectly correct, this does not mean that having a religion is either ridiculous or invalid
@BruceFnLee mate you're not gonna sway 18 years of religious believe with one youtube comment- I don't care too much if you haven't felt God in your life yet, just don't take it out on those of us who have
@RoryDangerCox1 Look at how ignorant you are. "You haven't felt God in your life yet" You imbecile, I was raised Catholic and was a very good Christian. Luckily I grew up and got an education and used critical thinking to quickly see that all systems of mythology are man made and false. You are nothing but a fool.
I agree with Stephen Fry but i put it in different words, we are not as good as the gods, we ARE the gods of our planet, looks at how much we have created and how much we have affected our planet. And asi speak we are on the verge on great new technologies such as nanotechnology and cell duplication (i.e. cloning) We are the Gods, We are the Fathers and the creatures of this planet are our flock which we must lead to protect and preserve.
@TheMinifro I think it's a little self righteous to say we're the Gods of this planet, as though we control it or have anything but a tiny, pathetic, fleeting grasp on it. Nature could wipe us all out in a second and probably will one day and there is not and will not ever be anything we can do about it because we're just insignificant specks in the universe. Maybe I've been reading too much pastoral literature.

@Munnchbunnch and i know many atheist who think: well it doesnt matter what i do and then do bad thinks from this wordview.
Its not religion thats to be banned, its mankind and its lack for beiing mindfull, having common sense, and staying close to their feelings and creativity.
f you have no sense of beiing attached to something higher than u miss the biggest predictor of happiness according tot research in the field of positive psychology. This higher doesnt have to be religion, but a good religion surves this really well. Their are a million ways but its not always easy to find.
@Munnchbunnch "The relationship between war and religion is a little bit like the relationship between Ant and Dec. Technically speaking you could have one without the other, but what would be the point?"
@Munnchbunnch Please, I'm an atheist too, but we are the most arrogant people. On every Hitches video I watch, there's tons of Hitchens wannabes writing in that superior, "I am just SO right, and you are SO deluded" tone. Some humility from us would probably make us more respectable, I'd say.
@chocolatedonut31 I disagree, it only sounds like people are arrogant. Hard to not sound like that when through applying logic and skepticism and desire for evidence against people who can't bring anything that would ever be accepted in a court of law as evidence.
The King James Bible can be beautiful no matter what your beliefs in the same way forms of art can be beautiful despite the beliefs of the artist. Stephen Fry himself can adore the work of Wagner without having to share his views. Read all you can examine everything, but also allow yourself to feel beauty. I'm in no way religious, but the music of Hildegard von Bingen and Tomaso Albinoni move me to tears, and Lenny Kravitz's 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' fills me with joy.
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need religion, hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important, qualitative differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption.
Homosexual activists, with complete support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims and martyrs; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
The reason we don't have a Bach, or a Mozart or an Emmerson is partly because of the slow whittling away of the church's moral authority by the likes of Fry, Hitchens and Dawkins. Bit by bit, ordinary people have had their faith undermined by a parade of media-savvy, Oxbridge-educated multi-millionaires. Luxuriating in their eloquent combativeness they reap the financial benefits, as the lower orders slowly rot in materialistic nihilism. A "world without God" looks like Tottenham...
@Mrfriendlymilk Because when the church's moral authority was prevalent there were never any riots and certainly no exploitation of the lower orders of society. Actually there was, far more so. Part instigated by the church's 'moral authority'. I'm not saying that there aren't problems in modern society. But saying that this is due to no faith and particularly because of Dawkins, Hitchens and Fry is not only wrong, it's ridiculous
Your argument is completely divorced from reality or history.
@jungsbodyguard I don't think you are in a position to say whether my point is wrong or not. But if you are going to try, you ought at least to try and understand it first.
@jungsbodyguard "never any riots and certainly no exploitation of the lower orders of society" Erm, there were numerous peasant revolts. And slaves and serfs can certainly be said to have been exploited.
@jungsbodyguard There is always the temptation with these issues to automatically assume the position that is most familiar to you regardless of the subtlelties of the particular case you are answering. Young TomFynn here is a good example. He is positively straining on the leash to defend the atheist cause, so much so that he could only manage your first sentence before leaping in. Had he an open mind he would have read on to find you were being sarcastic. He enjoys the fight a little too much.
Science has artificially created life already. Along with this it has answered the big question theists love to ask "How did something come from nothing."
If you study physics to a high enough level you come across the work of the great Werner Heisenberg. With his uncertainty principle applied to the quantum theory he answered this question.
I suggest this text:
"The physical principles of the quantum theory." - Werner Heisenberg.
@055697 LOL. This comment is hilarious because it proves Stephen's point beautifully (4:58). If I believed in God, I would pity him, because he now only has people like you fighting for his cause.
if you are going to claim that other people are ''ignorant'' then at least get some simple laws of english grammar into your head. it is ''you're so ignorant'', not ''your so ignorant''.
you are contracted into you're = subject plus verb (second person singular of the verb to be)
your = possessive adjective before a noun (i.e. my book, your book, his book, etc). ''ignorant'' is an adjective.
@055697 Expert on everything... That was good... You wanna insult me, grow up first... Mentally, that is. Faggot Fry: Nice remark. He IS gay, has no shame on admitting it, has done so much more than you will probably EVER do with your life and has more intelligence in his pinky than you have in your entire brain. So, if you wanna insult him, you gotta step it up, dude, coz he's in a whole 'nother level than you... But nice effort nonetheless.
hurr intelligence is in your brain not your pinky so he would have moar intellgents in his brain then mister fry would have in his pinky - need2lrnphysiology you idiot
@Jamesisshit I don't know if you're just a bad speller, but that was so awful that I don't even know where to start... Your lack of grammar is shameful, but let's not talk about that. Let's talk about YOUR intelligence. 'Intelligence in his pinky' was an expression (I hope I don't have to tell you what that means... :S hint, hint: English dictionary, you might need it!). As for the 'need2lrnphysiology', 'nonsensical' is not enough to describe that comment, but 'irrelevant' is. To be continued...
@Jamesisshit Part 2! But let's not go into that. Your job now is to go back to English school, learn some new words (yay for you), return to this page, review what YOU wrote and rewrite it for GRAMMATICAL sense. Ohh, and about the English school, if you find yourself writing a thesis on Shakespear, you've gone to far for this video, but it might just help you COMMUNICATE BETTER (not to mention the massive improvement on SPELLING skills that you clearly already have <- that was sarcasm).
@Exkaliki10 Prometheus gave mankind the divine fire. This didn't make men into Gods. It gave men a spark of the divine which differentiated humans from other animals. This observation is the basis of all theistic belief, and has been interpreted as imposing a greater moral burden on humanity. Fry is an idiot who misinterprets the Promethean myth and extrapolates that mankind is God, when the myth clearly asserts nothing of the kind. Fry should be quoting Aleister Crowley.
@Vot63 You are right on two accounts. One: Mr. Fry probably 'misinterpreted' the Promethean myth, but allow me to point out that no-one died from this particular 'misinterpretation', whilst other, more prominent 'misinterpretations' have led to the killing, slaughter and torture of countless. (must I point to the Crusades and the Suicide Bombers?) If the extremists are 'allowed' to interpret a book (albeit 'religious'), then why shouldn't Mr. Fry be allowed to interpret one myth? TBC
@Vot63 Part 2: He does have a valid point on his interpretation. Personally, I do see sense in it, unlike an interpretations that says, let's say, kill everyone who dares even try to change your mind about the right God, for example. But, anyway. The second point you were correct on was he should have quoted someone else... Maybe Sam Harris (writter of 'The End of Faith'), since he offers some good insight on beliefs and interpretations.
@Exkaliki10 You are positing a false dichotomy in which theists want to "kill everyone" who disagrees with them are balanced against an imagined sainthood of atheists who want to pat small children and ruffle fluffy kittens. I personally find atheists to be belligerent and aggressive in debate.
As per Fry's view of the Promethean myth and christianity, it is plainly wrong. There are many allusions to Christ in man in the bible. Fry often says dumb stuff in academic language.
I don't see how you're making a successful criticism against fry by basically saying "christianity also believes the "fire"/"christ" (whatever you want) is within us too." You're basically agreeing with what fry says except you're adding christian dogma to it, basically adding unnecessary assumptions. Also how is Fry's view of the Promethean Myth "plainly wrong"? I know you're trying to protect your religion by discrediting Fry but you don't have to make childish insults at him to do it
@MrKommienezuspadt If Prometheus had to steal fire from the Gods, it is obviously the Gods that posses "fire", or "divinity". Prometheus is saying that mankind possesses an aspect of an external presiding divine power. Fry is an atheist, how does the citation of a myth that affirms divine authority support his position? It does not. Fry just just dresses up modernist tripe in the authoritative respectability of his classical education.
What is the difference between the Gods possessing "divine fire" and humans possessing divine fire? If the gods were not ruled by the fire externally because they possessed it then there's no reason whatsoever to assume that the myth meant that when the humans possessed it they were ruled by the fire externally. Like Fry said the point of the myth was to show that Prometheus had made the humans equal to that of the gods, at least in glory, guilt, and goodness from within.
@MrKommienezuspadt The Gods posses fire in the sense that they are beings of fire. Mankind is of flesh, carnal, yet is imbued with a spark of divinity. Fry's interpretation of the Promethean myth is bullshit. Fry prefers Greek mythology to Christian mythology because the Greeks were homophilic and Christianity is homophobic. Fry is gay as a goose, and distorts facts to supports his preferences.
Oh Bullshit. No where in the myth does it say or imply that the God's possession of Fire is distinct from Man's possession of fire in the sense that they are truly "fire beings" and that man is not. Your argument is unsuccessful as it's consistent to think that when Man possesses fire then that fire is inherent within mankind hitherto. Also God's were carnal, like us, and actively satisfied what we'd call "the flesh". Fry likes Greek mythology as he finds it more exalting to humans.
@MrKommienezuspadt The Greek Gods were divine beings with carnal appetites. Human beings were carnal beings with a spark of divinity. Your assertion that the Promethean myth indicates that the Greeks saw no distinction between Gods and mortals is utter nonsense to anyone with a scintilla of classical knowledge. Fry likes to reinterpret Greek mythology to bash Christianity. Fry is a homosexual atheist not a Greek pagan.
My god you're dense. I never asserted there's no distinction between the gods and mortals, I said the Promethean Myth destroys any distinction they had in virtuosity, that is in things like goodness. This is simply obvious, saying humans only got a "spark of divinity" out of this in no way contradicts the point that Fry was trying to make, which is that the myth shows humans are equal to gods in virtue and spirit. Never said Fry was a Greek pagan, nor is his homosexual atheism relevant.
@MrKommienezuspadt Fire is technology, virtue is an attribution of character. By what convoluted, narrow-minded, misunderstanding do you come to confuse the one with the other, for there is nothing in the Promethean myth that suggests that the possession of fire is analogous to the attainment of virtue and everything to suggest that it indicates powers of comprehension beyond those of the lower animals. It is abundantly clear that you don't have the first clue about Greek mythology.
indeed he is smart and brings his point (that is truly valid) across remarkably accurate. however personally as someone who has not been in touch with buddhism too much I feel he brings shame to this religion. as far as I understood it the point of buddhism as opposed to hinduism is not to worship your deity (whomever you choose as say an introduction teacher), but to strive after them and eventually become them in all meaningful respects, thus achiving to be a buddha-"higher" being
Stephen is a treasured national jewel, we love him and is sexuality doesn't even come into it. Such a beautiful command of the English language and all grounded in Shakespeare and the classics and with his words conveying as the music of thought itself and so fucking funny yet deeply humanistic, oh what a
WOW those guys sitting on the empire estate building have got some balls LOL no safety rope or anything... sat there like they are sat on a park bench.
Also, I think a lot of the more militant (ie the mid-brow) atheists totally FAIL psychologically (of course the ignorance is worse for intellectually comparable Christians but Christians have an excuse). Finally, the vast majority of the teachings of Christ are quite beautiful and ethically sound. There are those few which are hard to reconcile but for the most part I don't see what atheists (again the mid-brow) have against Christ as opposed to Christianity...
Oh yeah and I'd take one Bach over a thousand Dawkins or Hitchens :)
I think atheists (mostly just the angry less educated ones) should view religion and esp Christianity as a METAPHOR FFS!!! The really intelligent atheists that I know are not driven out of anger and they do not despise believers in any way!!! They, if anything, have a lot of sympathy for people who believe in God. Lastly, atheists should understand that destroying a persons belief can be as traumatic as losing a loved one...
@chrisgrainger Of course... what's your point? You can't blame most of these people for believing their parents! You must be ignorant regarding psychology and sociology. You realize for example that people will actually ALTER THEIR OWN MEMORIES if there is enough peer-pressure to do so; this is a scientific fact and there are many others like it. If you're interested in "helping" delusional Christians you should keep this mind unless you're really just out to hurt people...
@soundslave im not trying to convince you, what makes you think your that important.. im just letting you know you are wrong.. and so is Fry. fry is a ocmedian all comedian have a trouble accepting god, simply by the way comedians see life to develop their jokes... eistein says the has to be a creator... who the fuck is fry
doing great things doesnt mean you have to be a believer, stephen fry is mega intelligent he doesnt believe..
if you look back to all the greatest people the most prominant ones that actually done the greatest things the big names, such as eistein , newton ect ect they might not be religious or believe in any specific religion as they might not of took that path to want to commit to a specific religion... but they all say one thing REAL science all points to a CREATOR.
@quickmantan I'd agree, but only for scientist working before the 1960s. Scientific discoveries over the last 40-50 years have pretty much disproved the existence of a god/creator. Einstein and Newton didn't know any better st the time.
@soundslave you are wrong again, science has made no major leaps SINCE they turn down the idea there is a God.. because doing so actually stops REAL science which is until disporven it cannot be counted out, and what the hell are you talking about creatism has never been disproven, where Evolution has.. the odds and calculations suggests its impossible for order, and laws and physics to have happend by chance.. IMPOSSIBLE, it all leads to creator. but scientist dont want to accept god
@quickmantan Ok arguments over, I try not to talk to creationists. They're indoctrinated from birth to think a certain way and no amount of research and education will change your mind.
its soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo funny how you atheists dont realise atheism is a religion and full of doctrines, because you all say the exact same shit.... I WAS NEVER BROUGHT UP AS A CHRISTIAN< I WAS NEVER FORCED INTO CHURCH< MY PARENTS DONT ARENT CHRISTIANS THEY ARE EVEN WHITE... same stereotypical narrow minded atheist.. go and worship your god.. MONEY
why would scientist accept god when they are killing animals everyday in their labs in really in humane ways.. they even tell us animals have no feelings or concious, they just exist.. lol that is what they tell themselves because they wouldnt be able to do their jobs if they believed the truth that animals do feel emotions , pain and love just like humans... and people believe that too.. science is great but when it comes to the truth about LIFE. its not science at all...
all the computer stuff they are coming up with nowadays is nothing,, , now they use the evolution theory approach.. so they created a micro chip,, next year it will be another microchip but smaller and more powerful, and this will keep going on and on and on,, but noone is coming up with anything NEW.. ppl say its rediculous to believe theres a powerful being that created everything.. but yet ppl believe we can create ourselfs lol
@quickmantan You gonna stop trying to convert me? I'd rather learn about how the world works for myself, rather than getting it all from a 2000 year old book.
I am not trying to convert you,, i am stating facts, its just your probally subcosciously thinking OMG this guy is talking sense.. because i am right i always am proven to be right.. its upto you what you believe its called free will.. i am not forcing you and neither is God,, you make your choice. I have looked at life asked questions, wondered , pondered, been completely honest with myself and others, and it lead me to the 2000 year old book... thats ME, where you go is upto you
@quickmantan You are arrogant. You say modern science doesn't contribute; you're forgetting that it's curing disease, ending famine, exploring the universe and solving global warming. Those are all issues that affect us on a daily basis. Scientific discoveries have more of an impact on our lives than a devine being.
true very true , why doesnt god just jump infornt of buses when i child runs across the road, why doesnt god just stop famine so we dont have to find the cure oursleves, when someone gets hooked on drugs, why doesnt god just magically make them free from drugs.. when a parent is about to walk out and leave their mother and child why doesnt god just, snap his fingers and make the mad turn around.
So in famine happens because of sin.. just like if someone bad enters a group of people it can demoralise the whole group.. throw a pebble into a lake it cause huge ripples across the pond.. that is the way life works,, sin entered the world because of satan and now there is famine, and we deal with it.. god does not intervein in anybodys life that doesnt believe and accept him.. because you chose to live without him, then he gives you free will to do so.
please google (cancer cure found no money in it) and read what it says... cancer cure has been found but the good hearted atheist scientist show their true colours.. please read..
. this is science for you . the great scientists of today that have IQs lower than 130 that dont believe in GOD,, oh yeds they do the athesit GOD MONEY.. I have a higher IQ than most modern scientist.. maybe thats why I care more and can see the truth more..
@quickmantan I'm pretty sure you don't have a high IQ, certainly not higher than Stephen Frys anyway. Plus the drug companies say theres no money in it, not the scientists. Drug companies aren't owned by scientists - they're owned by business men.
my IQ is 156 was offered to enter mensa , no idea what stephens fry is, but i garantee i am far more gifted than stephen fry,, ok he has alot of knowlege but knowlege is learnt from reading.. i doubt the guy taught himself to ride a bike in 5 minutes, and taught himself to swim by watching someone else in under a minute.. taught myself to play guitar, sing, drums, bass, keyboards, i am also a gifted songwriter, notthing i can do.. as for knowlege he beats me anyday
@soundslave stephen fry is impressive at knowlege he abviously has a very good memory, knowlege is useless without wisdom plus knowlege can be achieved by simply reading... i am more impressed with gifted individuals that CREATE can pick things up faster than anyone else, has a wide understanding... but i believe my gift are from god, without god id just be a normal average dude.. i owe it all to him
@quickmantan Liam Gallagher of the band "oasis" has an IQ of 164. Going by your reasoning he is apparently an individual of more merit than say, Chopin.
"i am more impressed with gifted individuals that...(have) a wide range of understanding"
Ah, by which you mean polymaths. Like Stephen Fry for example.
Yeah, I'm going with "soundslave" on this one, your posts reek of trolling.
@pamew precisily liam gallagher is a gifted genius.. i know that, only a fool cant see it..
dude why the hell would i bother studying something i have NO interest in whatsoever. I know I play music, i am a musician and thats where i channel my energy.. and nope all people with high IQ have good reasoning skills, thats part of the high IQ.. but its what field you chose to apply your genius in.
all i know is I can learn anything quicker than anyone ive met, so that cant be a bad trait.
"precisily (sic) liam (sic) gallagher (sic) is a gifted genius.. i know that, only a fool cant (sic) see it.."
"If I saw an alien I'd tell it to fuck right off, because whatever planet he came from they wouldn't have the Beatles or any decent fucking music. So they can fuck right off, I ain't going nowhere with them!"
@pamew guess that makes you a fool , look i am getting bored now, everytime i comment i always end up talking to 3 people at once, you know the case of cinderella and the 3 wicked aunties, its like that, i am not making it up everywhere i comment, 3 people violent oppose me.. and that is actually another quote..
all genius are always violently opposed by mediocre minds..
its ok liam cause i see the real liam and i know what the guys about.
@quickmantan "all people with high IQ have good reasoning skills, thats part of the high IQ"
Right, so 2 people with the same IQ must then logically have the same level of aptitude. Except they don't, because IQ tests test lingual, mathematical and logical aptitude. One can have an overall above average IQ and still have poor aptitude in certain areas. My IQ is above average. Yet I have poor mathematical aptitude. You seem to have a rather simplistic, childish definition of intelligence.
2) In fact, people who show high aptitude in several areas are actually rather rare. You claim to have a genius level IQ and yet you make common spelling and grammatical errors that I had got past by around age 11. If your claim is true and your "high" intelligence guarantees you naturally high aptitude across any area, why is your use of language so poor? It is, after all, a rather important factor in how others perceive ones intelligence, something you seem to care a great deal about...
people who are gifted have traits.. they are different from normal people.. which is why the reason and think so well.. someone who is very intelligent that doesnt have the trait of being gifted. is not gifted because they lack the traits that make you that way.. which is why i believe gifted people are born, its a god given gift.. in chinese talent and gifted , is two words put together . heavens fortune... meaning it was given from god
2) I also love that "genius trait" of illogical belief in a deity. You choose to believe something without any evidence. Rather naive for a genius, aren't you?
ive looked on your page it says you know nothing about spiritualism or religion, so errrmmm shut up on things you dont know..
being gifted is not normal its being special and better than eveyrone else just like their are retards the unfortunate ones, their are GIFTED ones hense the WORD gifted.. its a gift..
nope my sister cant play guitar or any instrument cant sing either, my mum and dad are not gifted . so WRONG
@quickmantan "again spiritualism is a word you know, related to spirituality .. oh i forgot dumb people cannot connect links"
Uh, what link? "spirituality" is personal belief. "spiritualism" is a specific monotheistic belief system. They're in no way interchangeable. Please stop embarrassing yourself.
Even wikipedia knows this shit, for Christ's sake. (see what I did there, providing sources of evidence to back up arguments, rather than repeatedly calling my opponent a "retard"?).
but reasoning skills beyond the average person most certainly... average people I actually find really stupid.. and I am not being arrogant saying that its I'll explain why.. When i was a kid, I never knew I was any better or smarter than anyone else, but i was doing things other people couldnt, and i would say to them its easy, just do this. but they still couldnt do it, in my mind i thought they really could, i thought i was like everyone else. but not true
"and nope all people with high IQ have good reasoning skills, thats part of the high IQ.. but its what field you chose to apply your genius in."
Apparently, by your claim, you "choose" which field to apply your "genius" in. Right, I chose to have the genetic code that would result in a brain best geared for linguistics. Derp.
another retard that goes on about typing errors.. it does com eup with red underline you know when its wrong, im just not sad enough to go back to correct it like you would pfftt
@quickmantan I don't have to correct anything, I can spell. :)
"another retard that goes on about typing errors"
There's a difference between typing errors and conflating completely removed terms. You replaced "spirituality" with "spiritualism" when they are completely separate things.
"so are you saying you know nothing about spirituality , but you know about spiritualism LOL"
Um, no, not at all. In fact I simply explained the fact that I was being humorous in my statement that you so horribly misquoted and that spirituality and spiritualism are two separate, different things. Which they are.
"typing errors is"
That should be "typing errors are".
Don't worry, we're in grammar now, which is a separate institution.
First goddamn line of the article. Even adolescent wikipedia editors have a firmer grasp of the difference than you do. Shit their IQ's must be at LEAST 200, right?
Do yourself a favour and just learn the damn difference. The fact you'd rather sit back and launch ad hominem assaults rather than just acknowledge an error points to a level of childishness that even a buffoon like myself won't tolerate.
Hint: Spirituality and spiritualism are two totally different things. One is a monotheistic belief system, the other refers simply to an immaterial reality, or even simply "The deepest beliefs people hold". You're really not very good at making an argument if you read the word "spirituality" and replace it with "spiritualism" as if they are synonyms.
solving global warming? have you or anyone whitness this, is that why there are more and more factories getting built and the ozone layer is now a complete mess, ice is melting sea levels are getting higher. NO scientists arent helping global warming, its us people at home that are helping by chancing our lives and being more green, not the scientists.cure diseases wheres the cure for cancer?
scientist could probably find a cure for cancer, but theres no money in it so they dont care
this implies that comtemporary theism has no great minds behind it which is completely bogus. Also, great minds such as these are typically only recognized posthumously anyway. The bottom line is that there are incredibly brilliant minds on both sides of the debate and there always have been.
It is a beautiful answer that Fry gives here, tho. He's much better, more intellectually serious, than Dawkins, Hitchens, etc...
i know i hate people that talk like that... basically he could have used words and sentences that was alot shorter, but he is trying to sound inteeligent... fruit cake... listen to stephen fry he is easy to understand and he is intelligent.
Jesus NEVER said "he without sin may cast the first sin" that was a later addition in the 15th century by monks to stop people from stoning to death adulterers.
Also: Monotheism does not have a Monopoly on Morality.
@johnpatrick818 I ment to say "STONE" my bad! In doesn't exists in these earlier copies: P66, P75, Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, Vaticanus, Bezae Cantabrigeinsis Also see "Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why" by Bart D. Ehrman Also these are not mentioned either: All men are created equal, God helps those who help themselves, Money is the root of all evil, Neither a borrower nor a lender be, Spare the rod and spoil the child, To err is human, to forgive, divine.
Jesus NEVER said "he without sin may cast the first sin" that was a later addition in the 15th century by monks to stop people from stoning to death adulterers.
@BelfastAtheist Follow not what I preach, in the KJV bible and ask for the same warlike things that have occurred in the past up until the sun explodes losing souls to ashes,with humans constantly giving evil for evil,and never showing mercy,and choking throats,and not hugging bodies.and that is exactly what Satan wants humans to do. Follow my way which is Gods way down the narrow path of peace,and save your soul even if the heavens fall. Show Gods forgiving love, and then he will come back.
@BelfastAtheist Power to God is not power to men. Power to God makes enemies into friends, creates life, heals broken hearts, edify s humans lifting them up, and doing good things, but the power of man enslaves, puts humans in bondage with oppressive laws, and uses war to pummel humans into submission having no love controlling humans with fear. See the difference between mans power, and Gods power?
I love this speech and have listened to it countless times - BUT does it not ruin it when "that is the most wonderful tribute to the human spirit" kicks in? She sounds like such an arse licking bitch, it is patronising to suggest that we had not recognised that for ourselves.
Stephen Fry was in V for Vendetta. Your argument is invalid.

The homosexual agenda is not good for anyone, including those who consider themselves "gay".

And asi speak we are on the verge on great new technologies such as nanotechnology and cell duplication (i.e. cloning) We are the Gods, We are the Fathers and the creatures of this planet are our flock which we must lead to protect and preserve.

Stephen Fry himself can adore the work of Wagner without having to share his views. Read all you can examine everything, but also allow yourself to feel beauty. I'm in no way religious, but the music of Hildegard von Bingen and Tomaso Albinoni move me to tears, and Lenny Kravitz's 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' fills me with joy.

simonbrogabee 4 months ago
The reason we don't have a Bach, or a Mozart or an Emmerson is partly because of the slow whittling away of the church's moral authority by the likes of Fry, Hitchens and Dawkins. Bit by bit, ordinary people have had their faith undermined by a parade of media-savvy, Oxbridge-educated multi-millionaires. Luxuriating in their eloquent combativeness they reap the financial benefits, as the lower orders slowly rot in materialistic nihilism. A "world without God" looks like Tottenham...
Mrfriendlymilk 4 months ago
@Mrfriendlymilk Because when the church's moral authority was prevalent there were never any riots and certainly no exploitation of the lower orders of society. Actually there was, far more so. Part instigated by the church's 'moral authority'. I'm not saying that there aren't problems in modern society. But saying that this is due to no faith and particularly because of Dawkins, Hitchens and Fry is not only wrong, it's ridiculous
Your argument is completely divorced from reality or history.

You need to be skilled in mathematics however.

you are contracted into you're = subject plus verb (second person singular of the verb to be)
your = possessive adjective before a noun (i.e. my book, your book, his book, etc). ''ignorant'' is an adjective.

Exkaliki10 5 months ago
@Exkaliki10 Prometheus gave mankind the divine fire. This didn't make men into Gods. It gave men a spark of the divine which differentiated humans from other animals. This observation is the basis of all theistic belief, and has been interpreted as imposing a greater moral burden on humanity. Fry is an idiot who misinterprets the Promethean myth and extrapolates that mankind is God, when the myth clearly asserts nothing of the kind. Fry should be quoting Aleister Crowley.
Vot63 4 months ago
@Vot63 You are right on two accounts. One: Mr. Fry probably 'misinterpreted' the Promethean myth, but allow me to point out that no-one died from this particular 'misinterpretation', whilst other, more prominent 'misinterpretations' have led to the killing, slaughter and torture of countless. (must I point to the Crusades and the Suicide Bombers?) If the extremists are 'allowed' to interpret a book (albeit 'religious'), then why shouldn't Mr. Fry be allowed to interpret one myth? TBC
Exkaliki10 4 months ago
@Vot63 Part 2: He does have a valid point on his interpretation. Personally, I do see sense in it, unlike an interpretations that says, let's say, kill everyone who dares even try to change your mind about the right God, for example. But, anyway. The second point you were correct on was he should have quoted someone else... Maybe Sam Harris (writter of 'The End of Faith'), since he offers some good insight on beliefs and interpretations.
Exkaliki10 4 months ago
@Exkaliki10 You are positing a false dichotomy in which theists want to "kill everyone" who disagrees with them are balanced against an imagined sainthood of atheists who want to pat small children and ruffle fluffy kittens. I personally find atheists to be belligerent and aggressive in debate.
As per Fry's view of the Promethean myth and christianity, it is plainly wrong. There are many allusions to Christ in man in the bible. Fry often says dumb stuff in academic language.
Vot63 4 months ago
@Vot63
I know you're trying to protect your religion by discrediting Fry but you don't have to make childish insults at him to do it
MrKommienezuspadt 3 months ago
@MrKommienezuspadt If Prometheus had to steal fire from the Gods, it is obviously the Gods that posses "fire", or "divinity". Prometheus is saying that mankind possesses an aspect of an external presiding divine power. Fry is an atheist, how does the citation of a myth that affirms divine authority support his position? It does not. Fry just just dresses up modernist tripe in the authoritative respectability of his classical education.
Vot63 3 months ago
@Vot63
MrKommienezuspadt 3 months ago
@MrKommienezuspadt The Gods posses fire in the sense that they are beings of fire. Mankind is of flesh, carnal, yet is imbued with a spark of divinity. Fry's interpretation of the Promethean myth is bullshit. Fry prefers Greek mythology to Christian mythology because the Greeks were homophilic and Christianity is homophobic. Fry is gay as a goose, and distorts facts to supports his preferences.
Vot63 3 months ago
@Vot63
MrKommienezuspadt 3 months ago
@MrKommienezuspadt The Greek Gods were divine beings with carnal appetites. Human beings were carnal beings with a spark of divinity. Your assertion that the Promethean myth indicates that the Greeks saw no distinction between Gods and mortals is utter nonsense to anyone with a scintilla of classical knowledge. Fry likes to reinterpret Greek mythology to bash Christianity. Fry is a homosexual atheist not a Greek pagan.
Vot63 3 months ago
@Vot63
MrKommienezuspadt 3 months ago
@MrKommienezuspadt Fire is technology, virtue is an attribution of character. By what convoluted, narrow-minded, misunderstanding do you come to confuse the one with the other, for there is nothing in the Promethean myth that suggests that the possession of fire is analogous to the attainment of virtue and everything to suggest that it indicates powers of comprehension beyond those of the lower animals. It is abundantly clear that you don't have the first clue about Greek mythology.
Vot63 3 months ago
@Exkaliki10
indeed he is smart and brings his point (that is truly valid) across remarkably accurate. however personally as someone who has not been in touch with buddhism too much I feel he brings shame to this religion. as far as I understood it the point of buddhism as opposed to hinduism is not to worship your deity (whomever you choose as say an introduction teacher), but to strive after them and eventually become them in all meaningful respects, thus achiving to be a buddha-"higher" being

Finally, the vast majority of the teachings of Christ are quite beautiful and ethically sound. There are those few which are hard to reconcile but for the most part I don't see what atheists (again the mid-brow) have against Christ as opposed to Christianity...

Lastly, atheists should understand that destroying a persons belief can be as traumatic as losing a loved one...

why would scientist accept god when they are killing animals everyday in their labs in really in humane ways.. they even tell us animals have no feelings or concious, they just exist.. lol that is what they tell themselves because they wouldnt be able to do their jobs if they believed the truth that animals do feel emotions , pain and love just like humans... and people believe that too.. science is great but when it comes to the truth about LIFE. its not science at all...
quickmantan 6 months ago
all the computer stuff they are coming up with nowadays is nothing,, , now they use the evolution theory approach.. so they created a micro chip,, next year it will be another microchip but smaller and more powerful, and this will keep going on and on and on,, but noone is coming up with anything NEW.. ppl say its rediculous to believe theres a powerful being that created everything.. but yet ppl believe we can create ourselfs lol

@quickmantan You gonna stop trying to convert me? I'd rather learn about how the world works for myself, rather than getting it all from a 2000 year old book.
soundslave 6 months ago
@soundslave
I am not trying to convert you,, i am stating facts, its just your probally subcosciously thinking OMG this guy is talking sense.. because i am right i always am proven to be right.. its upto you what you believe its called free will.. i am not forcing you and neither is God,, you make your choice. I have looked at life asked questions, wondered , pondered, been completely honest with myself and others, and it lead me to the 2000 year old book... thats ME, where you go is upto you
quickmantan 6 months ago
@quickmantan You are arrogant. You say modern science doesn't contribute; you're forgetting that it's curing disease, ending famine, exploring the universe and solving global warming. Those are all issues that affect us on a daily basis. Scientific discoveries have more of an impact on our lives than a devine being.
soundslave 6 months ago
@soundslave
true very true , why doesnt god just jump infornt of buses when i child runs across the road, why doesnt god just stop famine so we dont have to find the cure oursleves, when someone gets hooked on drugs, why doesnt god just magically make them free from drugs.. when a parent is about to walk out and leave their mother and child why doesnt god just, snap his fingers and make the mad turn around.
then is their a point to us existing?
quickmantan 6 months ago
@quickmantan

I have a higher IQ than most modern scientist.. maybe thats why I care more and can see the truth more..
quickmantan 6 months ago
@quickmantan I'm pretty sure you don't have a high IQ, certainly not higher than Stephen Frys anyway. Plus the drug companies say theres no money in it, not the scientists. Drug companies aren't owned by scientists - they're owned by business men.
soundslave 6 months ago
@soundslave
my IQ is 156 was offered to enter mensa , no idea what stephens fry is, but i garantee i am far more gifted than stephen fry,, ok he has alot of knowlege but knowlege is learnt from reading.. i doubt the guy taught himself to ride a bike in 5 minutes, and taught himself to swim by watching someone else in under a minute.. taught myself to play guitar, sing, drums, bass, keyboards, i am also a gifted songwriter, notthing i can do.. as for knowlege he beats me anyday
quickmantan 6 months ago
@soundslave stephen fry is impressive at knowlege he abviously has a very good memory, knowlege is useless without wisdom plus knowlege can be achieved by simply reading... i am more impressed with gifted individuals that CREATE can pick things up faster than anyone else, has a wide understanding... but i believe my gift are from god, without god id just be a normal average dude.. i owe it all to him
quickmantan 6 months ago
@quickmantan Eugh, it's clear you're just a troll. Goodbye.
soundslave 6 months ago
@quickmantan Liam Gallagher of the band "oasis" has an IQ of 164. Going by your reasoning he is apparently an individual of more merit than say, Chopin.
"i am more impressed with gifted individuals that...(have) a wide range of understanding"
Ah, by which you mean polymaths. Like Stephen Fry for example.
Yeah, I'm going with "soundslave" on this one, your posts reek of trolling.
Either that, or you're horrifically delusional.
pamew 6 months ago
@pamew precisily liam gallagher is a gifted genius.. i know that, only a fool cant see it..
dude why the hell would i bother studying something i have NO interest in whatsoever. I know I play music, i am a musician and thats where i channel my energy.. and nope all people with high IQ have good reasoning skills, thats part of the high IQ.. but its what field you chose to apply your genius in.
all i know is I can learn anything quicker than anyone ive met, so that cant be a bad trait.

Uh, yeah, fucking genius...

No, but I know the one with 2 step-sisters.

And all delusional individuals believe themselves to be rational.
Yeah, we can both be pointlessly bitchy, but it isn't constructive. You're really failing to impress me.

You seem to have a rather simplistic, childish definition of intelligence.
pamew 6 months ago
2) In fact, people who show high aptitude in several areas are actually rather rare. You claim to have a genius level IQ and yet you make common spelling and grammatical errors that I had got past by around age 11. If your claim is true and your "high" intelligence guarantees you naturally high aptitude across any area, why is your use of language so poor? It is, after all, a rather important factor in how others perceive ones intelligence, something you seem to care a great deal about...
pamew 6 months ago
@pamew
people who are gifted have traits.. they are different from normal people.. which is why the reason and think so well.. someone who is very intelligent that doesnt have the trait of being gifted. is not gifted because they lack the traits that make you that way.. which is why i believe gifted people are born, its a god given gift.. in chinese talent and gifted , is two words put together . heavens fortune... meaning it was given from god

@quickmantan
"people who are gifted have traits.. they are different from normal people"
So are the mentally Ill.
"i believe gifted people are born, its a god given gift"
God? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Yes, I mean skills tending to run in families is just further proof of mythical sky daddy specifically picking people out for a purpose. oh, wait...
Do you actually think the creator of the universe has a special purpose for you? You fucking egomaniac...
pamew 6 months ago
2) I also love that "genius trait" of illogical belief in a deity. You choose to believe something without any evidence. Rather naive for a genius, aren't you?
pamew 6 months ago
@pamew
ive looked on your page it says you know nothing about spiritualism or religion, so errrmmm shut up on things you dont know..
being gifted is not normal its being special and better than eveyrone else just like their are retards the unfortunate ones, their are GIFTED ones hense the WORD gifted.. its a gift..
nope my sister cant play guitar or any instrument cant sing either, my mum and dad are not gifted . so WRONG

@quickmantan
"ive looked on your page it says you know nothing about spiritualism or religion, so errrmmm shut up on things you dont (sic) know.."
Actually I used the word "spirituality", but that's a minor gripe. I suppose self depreciative humour is probably an alien concept to you.
"their are retards"
Wow, both situational AND linguistic irony at once? Hah!

Uh, what link? "spirituality" is personal belief. "spiritualism" is a specific monotheistic belief system. They're in no way interchangeable. Please stop embarrassing yourself.

"not to be confused with spiritualism".
Even wikipedia knows this shit, for Christ's sake. (see what I did there, providing sources of evidence to back up arguments, rather than repeatedly calling my opponent a "retard"?).
This is all probably new to you...

@pamew
did i say the same?? nope
but reasoning skills beyond the average person most certainly... average people I actually find really stupid.. and I am not being arrogant saying that its I'll explain why.. When i was a kid, I never knew I was any better or smarter than anyone else, but i was doing things other people couldnt, and i would say to them its easy, just do this. but they still couldnt do it, in my mind i thought they really could, i thought i was like everyone else. but not true

"did i say the same?? nope"
Except for where you did:
"and nope all people with high IQ have good reasoning skills, thats part of the high IQ.. but its what field you chose to apply your genius in."
Apparently, by your claim, you "choose" which field to apply your "genius" in. Right, I chose to have the genetic code that would result in a brain best geared for linguistics. Derp.

another retard that goes on about typing errors.. it does com eup with red underline you know when its wrong, im just not sad enough to go back to correct it like you would pfftt
quickmantan 6 months ago
@quickmantan I don't have to correct anything, I can spell. :)
"another retard that goes on about typing errors"
There's a difference between typing errors and conflating completely removed terms. You replaced "spirituality" with "spiritualism" when they are completely separate things.
pamew 6 months ago
@pamew
so are you saying you know nothing about spirituality , but you know about spiritualism LOL
they are the same thing you numb nutt, if you know nothing about spirituality hwo is it possible you know about spiritualism??
typing errors is totally different from spelling mistakes.. and your talking about spiritualism and spirituality being different LOL what a plonker
quickmantan 6 months ago
@quickmantan

"not to be confused with spiritualism".
First goddamn line of the article. Even adolescent wikipedia editors have a firmer grasp of the difference than you do. Shit their IQ's must be at LEAST 200, right?
Do yourself a favour and just learn the damn difference. The fact you'd rather sit back and launch ad hominem assaults rather than just acknowledge an error points to a level of childishness that even a buffoon like myself won't tolerate.
pamew 6 months ago

"Used to have Bach and Michelangelo on his side."
this implies that comtemporary theism has no great minds behind it which is completely bogus.

Jesus NEVER said "he without sin may cast the first sin" that was a later addition in the 15th century by monks to stop people from stoning to death adulterers.
Also: Monotheism does not have a Monopoly on Morality.

Show Gods forgiving love, and then he will come back.
kobidobidog 6 months ago
