The freetheairwaves thing is a cool idea, but it just wouldn't work. Besides the obvious thing, bandwidth sharing.. the collisions over the networks would make the system practically unusable. For a quick lesson in networking, a client needs to request to use the wireless network. This is done by sending a "back off" signal, telling all other clients on the network to stop transmitting. Either thousands of routers would need to be put in place, or less than 10 people assigned to each network.

i've read in a few different places that politicians don't have to get "permission" from an artist to play a song at a rally or whatever. all they have to do is pay the ASCAP fee. the artist may not "approve" but as long as the ASCAP fee is paid, it's tough titty. it's as simple as that (or so i've read). the politician may choose to quit playing the song to avoid bad pub but it's up to them.
