For it to be "racism" then the group being discriminated against need to be in a position of power. Sorry to break it to u, but black people in the UK are NOT in a position of power.SOAS may not be as bad as many other unis but to claim it is not racist, while looking at SOAS students who are mainly white & have studied in private schools is a joke
Fenza you seem to have a chip on your shoulder. I work to resolve these issues faced by many, you seem to want people to stop talking about it and bury their heads in the sand as not to offend you and the other peaceful liberals of this nation, that will not help the situation, stop trying to attack and silence the debate, rather you should engage with it, you might learn more. your of a different generation, i understand, but the wheels were in motion before your birth. help fix the problems.
Mate, please stop making a big deal over your age as if it makes you an authority. I'm 26, only 4 years younger than you! I have no chip on my shoulder, like you I would like people to talk about the issues. Unfortunately, the government and media's liberal political agenda effectively silences the debate. For instance, I think there is far too much immigration to this country. Were I to attempt to express my views poliically or through the media, I would be labelled a racist.
When did I mention my age again - you are strange - seriously
By generation I am referring to the fact that WE never grew up in the era of colonialism, slavery, nor the bulk of the last century - when most the the current racial issues began to develop - therefore, I assume you feel a little unconnected to what White european powers have perpetuated against non whites around the world - does that make sense to you - or do you just wish to argue rather than debate.
This is so embarrassing to black students everywhere. As a black man he should be sensitive to the stereotypes people can take away from this. Calm rational debate not the hostility that sparks off ulgy scenes and lead people to think this is the kind of atmosphere that is a prelude to a stabbing, shooting
What are you talking about - they are talking about the democratic system and its functionality - is this the kind of atmosphere that preludes an urban war scene? I wish it were.
The very fact that you equate this scene to urban warfare reveals your own stereotypical attitude to your own African brethren, this my friend is a reflection of white supremacy - not because you disagree with the cause, which you have a right to - but because rather than listen to the content of the young brother...
...you have deemed his tone offensive and threatening, equating it with gang warfare. I wonder if you would feel the same were you confronted with equally impassioned European students?
Do I feel they could have communicated their issue clearer and calmer? Yes - but i understand and respect the issues they have brought to light, much of what was spoken was very valid - you choose to ignore the content, clutching your handbag like a white lady next a young black man on the underground.
Experience tells ME that white people are getting increasingly sick and tired of being labelled as bigoted, privileged, supremacist, racists. I am not, nor is my family, and nor are my friends.
Have you noticed the number of under-educated, unpriveliged, unemployed white people living on sink-estates in this country? They certainly can't play the race card! This is a social issue, not a racial one.
Imagine if I made the same sort of generalizations about blacks as you do about whites........
Please show me where I said all white people were bigoted, supremacist and racists or all were privileged I am well aware of the council estate in which many live.
I never once labelled all white people any of these things - yes there has been a history in this country where blacks/asians have been barred from many arenas - have been stopped from accessing certain innate freedoms - have been ridiculed and targeted..............
Well I suggest you go to an Arab country and observe how Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are treated there! But, of course, that would never be raised because it doesn't involve white people (like Arab slavery). What about all those millions of Africans killed in racially motivated genocides? All the fault of whites, I suppose! You ought to be proud that you live in one of, if not the, most diverse countries in the world where racism is largely a thing of the past.
Just because I never mentioned any of these issue which you did above does not mean I am not fully cognizant of their existence - you were crying about my comments on white supremacy - not my opinions on the Arab slave trade of Africans.
And yes, London, very diverse - also very divided. And I love living in London - I would not want to be anywhere else, but does that mean I cannot/should not see the problems this city has???
Agreed, I am part of that so called elite - by law yes, but does it happen to people of African descent everyday - damn right it does - stop being ridiculous - I understand you may feel yourself not to be a racist bigot, but not everyone is like you.
OK, by your logic - the overwhelming amount of racist attacks that have taken place in this country have been committed by white people - therefore white people are stereotyped as racist - you should spend some time addressing that!!!
......... these FACTS are related to a history of aggression and apparent superiority around the world based upon european notions of race
Thats been the reality of this country mate - trying to feign colorblindness is not a privilege you or I have.
People of African descent face massive stereotypes and generalisations everyday - walking into shops, banks, jobs, police, schools - but this you choose to ignore.
Europe created this racial hierarchical monster and now it has to face it.
Can you explain to me where or what this "racial, hierarchical monster" is? You have attended university and by law you can't be discriminated against when applying for a job. You are part of the elite my friend! I'm afraid that the overwhelming majority of murders and stabbings in London have been commited by black people and, unfortunately, that results in a stereotype. Like Scouser pikeys or Glaswegian drunks. This is something the black community ought to address rather than blame whites.
The hierarchical monster is the ideology that pits cultures against cultures - 'race' against 'race', makes some feel others are less then them because of skin colour, makes some exclude and abuse, causes exploitation - the impetus behind slavery, colonialism, segregation, institutional racism, etc etc
No, the monster is multi-culturalism. By that I mean the idea that we can all live happily together while following separate cultures, which is what the government, media and education system promotes. By the way, slavery ended a long time ago, so did colonialism, so did segregation and I'm not aware that any institution in this country is 'institutionally racist', which is a ridiculous term anyway. As you have had the same opportunities as everyone else, please snap out of the victim mentality.
Why can't cultures live side by side - they have done for millennia - I agree with you in that multi-culturalism as a discourse to racial harmony is perhaps flawed in its current format, but what's the alternative, the mass dictate to those that wish to hold alternative views; about history, immigration about reality essentially. As long as people follow the laws of this land, or at least challenge them in the proper manner, why can't people retain their cultural norms?
......victim mentality - what I think you fail to realise is that if there is anyone acting the victim it is you, feigning injustice because you can't express you true views, that there are to many foreigners stealing your jobs (and women). Fix up - I am not complaining one bit about my position, I am very comfortable and confident in my circumstance and identity, what I am addressing is the inequality of our society and the racial dynamic of that inequality.
Hold on, when did I say that foreigners are stealing our jobs and women? I am not against immigration per se; I think the level of immigration to this country is unprecedented in its quantity and rate and is bound to cause tensions. By the way, I frrankly couldn't give a fuck what foreigners do with 'our' women mate!
There is no 'racial dynamic' to inequality. As I said before, it is a social problem between rich and poor, privileged and deprived, upper/middle class and working class.
Those other issues are just as valid, perhaps moreso - doesn't mean there is no racial dynamic.
I hope you are including the mass of Americans, Australians and South Africans into this immigration issue - seeing as they are the biggest migrants to this country.
People have been coming to these shores for thousands of years, why should it stop, because you say so - i'm sure your family migrated here at some point - but now you want to stop others.
FFS. I didn't say I wanted to stop people coming here, I said too many people are coming here and at too fast a rate and it's bound to cause tensions. Of course people have been coming here for thousands of years, but never at this rate. Why do you think they pass through the rest of Europe and queue up at Calais? Because we are a soft touch and they know it. Look at the headlines today; for 1 in 7 children English is a second language. Ordinary people are getting sick of it.
So what - thats a good thing - we should encourage our children to speak all the languages of the world - we'll get used to it.
Ordinary People!!! - OK.
In Mali children are taught in French, they learn Arabic as well as an indigenous language. In Ghana people speak and write in English, In Twi and others. In the Philippines people speak their indigenous language, Spanish, and English.
Globalisation my friend - thats what happening, don't stall the development out of irrational fears
Please could you also explain to me why almost every ordinary person I have ever met in Asia and Africa wants to come and live in the UK or Europe? Seems strange to me if white peole are so terrible. And before you blame it all on colonialism, please bear in mind that some of the countries I have been to (indeed, some of the poorest) have never been ruled by a colonial power. Please explain.
proves this. The fact is, middle class and rich white people are given the greatest advantage with schooling and so they become the most able to get good grades to actually get into SOAS. This is white supremacy. It keeps the elite white and the lower classes remain as people of colour which keeps the control levels as they currently are. There are anomalys within this, but they really are a small minority. Just look at the students at all of the high uni's and you can see what I'm talking about
You seem to be assuming that there is an equal number of black and white people in this country. Living in London can mean that you forget that the overwhelming majority of people in this country are white. In the rural area where I live, the demography is 100% white. Stop playing the race card. I attend SOAS and there seems to be a lot of black people studying there. You even have 'positive discrimination' on your side now (racist against whites btw!). Get out of the victim mentality!
if any of you truly believe white supremacy is not existant at SOAS, then you have very little understanding about the world around you.
The whole education system in the West is based upon white supremacy. The very fact that poor students from as early on as primary school are given access only to the worst schools, the poorest schools with the least support availiable shows this. The fact that the students who go to these schools are largely immigrant communities and black communities...
Perhaps I should clarify then. SOAS and SOAS Students' Union enjoy nurturing the victim mentality in minority students. While racism certainly does exist in the country, SOAS itself is among the most racially diverse institutions in the country and it can hardly be said that racism exists within SOAS, other than between different minorities. Therefore this guy is USING race (rather like Lee Jasper) to defend and advance himself. SOAS encourages this, and here you can see it backfiring.
Ok I hear what your saying and in someways I agree - however, just because SOAS is racially diverse, does not mean racism does not exist there.
I take it your a previous student, like myself - The level of academic racism I found within my classes, run by White Europeans, not other minorities, was absolutely incredible. I would leave many classes utterly amazed at the level of ignorance and blatant discrimination that took place. Though I agree to an extent with the victim mentality it creates
would you rather that this protest be kept quiet until eventually people forgot about it? nah-ah, what's done is done and with this footage we can actually analyze the happenings and try to resolve the situation. Simply shrugging off the truth won't get anybody anywhere and will only encourage liars.
