  • the opening song is wonderful. what is it?

  • wow in 3:34 lara s body is deformed by the water reflextion on the saturn, i dont know if this would happen in real life lol

  • @midland88 No because light refraction through water isn't a thing that happens in the real world at all, "lol".

  • Having played through both versions I would say the saturn wins...slightly better graphics and for me the controls were always the decider...the Playstation control pads suck dick IMO.

  • SEGA SATURN WIN......THRILLER COLOUR

  • oh wait there is a bit more shading in the sega

  • i do not see a huge diiferance

  • well the manor house looks better on ps1. caves looks very similar.

  • 58 seconds in, the graphics look better on the PS then on saturn.

  • I just love the sega saturn, tomb raider on the saturn feels more valuable than the ps1 version, the boxes for the games look awesome too.

  • I used to lock the butler in the fridge on playstation lol

  • whats the difference between the sega saturn and the sega dreamcast? because i had the dreamcast..

  • @C0Opd0g Do mean the difference between the consoles? DreamCast came out roughly 5 years after the Saturn. So it's like comparing the PS1 vs PS2.

  • I'd say the Sega Saturn version is much better since it has more realistic textures and lighting...

  • @AS00124 sabes alguna razón el por que la versión de saturn no tiene pantalla de loading, solo se queda en negro cuando carga los mundos

  • why saturn version do not have loading screen ??

  • Ah Good Old Times :)

Thanx For Sharing With Us My Friend.... You Have Turned ME Back In The 90s :)))

    God Bless You!

  • I sooo miss old TR music......

  • Saturn version is a bit darker and has better draw distance. The ps1 version has shorter loading times.

  • @highwaysonyfan87 That's interesting because saturn games normally shows more collored images than ps. But we can adjust the brightiness at the menu. I really think that PC's version is quite superior than the both video games versions.

  • I loved the Sega Satun. It was really to bad it failed. I would say had Sega not been such idiots with there marketing, they would not have failed. Also the unexpected early release hurt them to. Not to mention Bernie Stellar i believe it was? So had Sega Done a few things differently, there might have been a bunch more exclusives and more games in general, but it was Segas marketing that was the failure NOT the actually system. It was a pretty powerfull system.

  • @XxBaTtLeToThEdEaThxX I disagree that the system itself should take none of the blame.

Powerful? Sort of... in it's own way.

Difficult, expensive & time consuming to program for? Definitely.

    Designed by Chimpanzees? Probably.

It was a snowball effect. An early release resulted in shitty launch games which resulted in poor initial sales which made most developers very cautious of the system & reluctant to release games on it which resulted in more poor sales and so on.

  • @retsub102 Yes that is true. Sega really had horrible marketing and they didnt design the hardware the best., but had they taken a few different moves? I personally believe that they would have succeded or at least made a little bit of profit of the Saturn. It was more of a 2D powerhouse though, not so much 3D. So what you said was true. I agree with you, i just think if Sega didnt make such bad moves, it could have been a sucess.

  • @XxBaTtLeToThEdEaThxX saturn not being a 3d powerhouse a true myth. the saturn was superior hardware wise in every way. at least on paper. problem was it was too hard to program for most or better said. most programmers didn't want to infest the time into it. especially not after saturn started selling so bad. there was no use and most made cheap ports that sucked. have a look at shenmue for saturn here on youtube and tell me what psx game looks better in 3d

  • @drunkensailor112 Do you know why they decided not to publish Shenmue for the Saturn? It might have really helped the system out.

  • @XxBaTtLeToThEdEaThxX because saturn was dead everywhere but japan and dreamcast was on the horizo, sega made the right choice

  • @drunkensailor112 Oh yeah. Well that does make sense. I was and still am a huge Sega fan. So I really loved all of there consoles, from the Genesis to the Dreamcast. I have never played the Master System though.

  • i find it ironic that the saturn version has the superior draw distance since the Sega Saturn was know for its short draw distance.

  • @nekomarulupin It depends on the game really. The software is what determines draw distance, not hardware. Most games were about the same as the PS1 versions, some were much worse & a few were a little better. Tomb Raider was one of the few.

  • no observable differences, only the water is better in saturn

  • no observable differences

  • The PC version trumps both of them, and you can use any gamepad with it too!

  • while, the ps graphics are prolly technically better - smoother/better fps, the visual ambiance - shadows, mood, perspective on the saturn really epitomize the feel i think tomb raider was going for

  • Less accurate deception of water color

    PS1 Pros

Environment mapping (save crystals, gold lara, gold bar)

Nice lighting affect on undewater textures

    transparent shadows and water textures

    Cons

    Polygon tearing

All of Lara is colored based on weather she's in the water

rather than coloring which parts are in the water

  • Their doesn't seem to be any apparent difference in draw distance from what I can see from these videos. Saturn cons Less accurate gamma (too dark, wrong color) No dithering (sharp color banding) Significantly slower Lower resolution Lara is same color underwater as out Different (worse) textures Lara warps when she's in water not just under it also has the artifact of pulling away geometry from the seams More artists defined texture glitches, generally less care and time spent
  • I HONESTLY PREFER THE ORGINAL TOMB RAIDER FOR THE SEGA SATURN, THE FEEL OF THE CONTROL TO THE RICHNESS OF THE AUDIO THAT THE SATURN PROVIDED AND I LOVE HOW WHEN THE SATURN LOADED IT DIDN'T HAVE THAT NASTY LOADING BLOCK. I THINK THE GRAPHICS ON THE SEGA ARE A LITTLE BETTER! =)

  • Remember this came out on Saturn first. Although PS1 version had better visuals, I'd say the Saturn version looked more like a dark tomb than PS'.

But I can't forgive Lara's head rippling in the water on Saturn version.

  • lol her tits are more pointed on the saturn

  • i love this comparisons :)

    ty for the videos.

  • Damn shes like mad fast on the Sega saturn version! WOW! :0

  • music makes me wanna cry, reminds me so much of tr1 and being a little kid again

  • Why are the colours so washed out on the PS1?

  • The Saturn version seems to have a lot less of those cracks in the geometry on walls and such.

  • @Alianger That is one of the few benefits of using Quadrilaterals instead of regular Polygons. That & less texture warping.

  • @therealbluedragon So overall you would say the PS1 version of Tomb Raider was more superior?

  • @Crkt4Eva Basics are more important than luxuries. Cool water effects & analogue control is nice & all but I'd take a smooth frame rate & better textures any day.

  • I for one love the shittyness of the Saturn.

I originally had this game for the Saturn, but I saw the Playstation version and had to get it for that too (for the handstand, as well as the graphics).

Did you know that there are some secret areas missing in the Saturn version? Namely on Cistern.

Now I'm older I think I prefer the Sega, for some bizarre reason.

I wish they made TR2 for Saturn.. ;[

  • Oh my God, the music...the graphics...

I was in love with this game when it was first released back in 96' ^^

  • PS1 version is superior in every way here. This is the kind of game it was made for, even though this type of game has not aged well at all. Especially compared to most sprite based games made over a decade ago.

I detested this game, but my college roommates loved it.

  • The Saturn is using only one of its two SH-2 processors to achieve the 3d graphics. Why couldn't they use the second just to do general clean up of the image?

  • @Kevrohall

Unfortunately, most companies at the time didn't want to be bothered with writing for 2 processors, not only was it hard, but it was unfamiliar. This was the fate of many Saturn versions of games, but if both processors were put to use then we get games like Virtua Fighter 2, which looks better then Tekken 3 any day.

  • I was thinking about picking up the Saturn original for the longest time, but I wasn't sure how good it was. Looks a lot better than I expected.

  • I love your side by side comparisons. I had this on the Sega Saturn first as I bought the Saturn first, however when I saw this game on the Playstation 1, I had to purchase a PS1 and this game again. I ended up just finishing it on the PS1 as the game played better and the detail was greater and lot more smooth. I remember thinking what a breakthrough for a game at the time.

  • Got to love the music. :)

  • Did you make these videos with the real hardware or just emulators?

  • @Legenden0 The vast majority of them are recorded from hardware. About 3 or 4 are from emu's. I never use emu's for recordings any more though.

  • Playstation looks marginally better to me.

  • I noticed the Sega Saturn version has more vibrant and good looking textures, the ps1 version seem to look a litke more blury, also we can notice at 2:30 that the draw distace is very limited on the ps1 versin when compared to a Sega Saturn version,

The water at 3:10, we can notice the the water is more transparent and also has a moce realistic effect of distorcion "i tink i can use this word" wich is not present on the ps1 version,

Overall, the Sega Saturn version graphicaly superior,

  • Saturn's colours seem to be more vibrant. It also runs at a higher resolution seeing as all Saturn games did. I can't which has longer draw distance.

  • @001freestyle These videos were captured from the consoles, not from emulators/pc version. They are in their original console resolutions - and yes, in the console versions you can distinguish very well what is attacking you. And seeing this video in hd doesn't change the resolution of the captured graphics.

  • Remember when games were hard... this was one of them. Had this on Saturn and pleased to say I beat it.

  • sega saturn has 2 microprocessors but it was complicated to program for both so the companies used only one instead of 2 that's why some loading times are slow and textures are more pixelated now the only game that was trying to use both microprocessors was shemue but like everyone knows was canceled

  • @Jigsaw2383 Actually there are quite a few games for the Saturn that make use of both CPUs

  • @therealbluedragon Games that actually put the slave CPU to actual good use?

  • @Jigsaw2383 there were many more like virtua fighter 2. saturn actually had 3 processors, one I think for sound that was also hard to coincide with the others. later first party saturn games like panzer dragoon saga show what possibilities there were.

  • Nice comparison video, it would have been interesting to see this series continue on the sega saturn, maybe we would have seen a different storyline?

  • Well the are both similar.

But I like the Playstation version better, the graphics are better, they are smoother, the load times are much faster, and the game is brighter.

The SEGA Saturn version is a bit smudgy, it is dark, and the load times are slow.

I own a complete copy of Tomb Raider for the Playstation.

  • La versión de saturn tenia mayor calidad de sonido.

  • Es normal que la versión de psx sea superior, en saturn salio mucho antes.

  • No matter what platform you choose, she still controls like an overweight pregnant manatee with knee arthritis.

  • @MetallicMushroom ROFL yea hindsight is a great thing but me when i first played it the controls were not that bad considering id just come from playing the megadrive the switch to saturn wasnt too much of a learning curve. Going backwards from modern consoles however is a pain in the ass lol

  • @MetallicMushroom

true i find this game crappy.

  • Seems like Saturn version has less graphical problems with textures on walls, floors etc. While ps1 shows some distortions. Still, i didn't remember how smooth the ps1 version was. It certainly looks better that the Saturn's one.

  • psx 5.3 sat4.7

  • draw

  • Draw distance is a lot better on the Saturn.

  • Also, Lara looks so skinny on the PS1 version and the game is a lot brighter...

  • Draw distance is way better on the Saturn version (at least on Lara's House, i haven't noticed any difference on the other levels)

Technically speaking, I think this is one of the best 3rd party 3D games on the Saturn. Actually, it might be THE best.

  • @TOTCJF I think the best is duke nukem 3d and quake

  • Besides all the other details people already noticed, i must endorse the fact that the draw distance is noticeably better on the Saturn version.

Technically speaking, I think this is one of the best 3rd party 3D games on the Saturn. Actually, it might be THE best.

(even though the PS version is better)

  • Fascinating. The higher resolution in the PS1 is noticeable in a few areas, specifically the ceiling of Lara's house, for example. Definitely some color differences, with the Saturn being perhaps a little richer or darker. The hanging vines on the Saturn look denser than the PS1's. Couldn't tell much about polygon counts and whatnot.

  • Not a big difference, the playstation is a little better.

  • I don't see the PlayStation version having a smoother framerate than the Sega Saturn version. I think it's otherwise. The PlayStation graphics are sharper though, probably because of the higher resolution. Then, the Sega Saturn version used more vivid colors as they said around here.

  • I find it rather strange that the water actually looks better on the Saturn, considering the Saturn couldnt do transparency very well if at all. I had both consoles and in my opinion, the Saturn was a superior machine, when games came out for both and looked better on the Playstation, i think it was cause the Saturn was alot harder to program for.

Compare Saturn Need for Speed against Playstation and youll see how much better the Saturn looked in that one ;)

  • Saturn has better wavy water effects on Laura, and a longer initial load time for the level, but the PS version has to stop and load during certain points WITHIN the level.

PS runs in a higher resolution, but other than that it's a great game on both consoles. Never understood why people gave the Saturn version such a hard time, it looks and plays great. I just beat it on Saturn last year and it was awesome!

  • I know why does everyone bitch about the Saturns 3d graphics? I have tomb raider for the Saturn and the graphics look fine to me they're not as refined as the Playstations but it gets the job done. The PS tomb raider is so dull the Saturn has much richer colors and is easier on the eyes.

  • I agree about the colors. For some reason the PS version looks kinda washed out. I think it has to do with dithering. The Saturn version just seems sharp and has great color.

  • Saturn is a tad more powerfull, just the way it was built made it difficult to program on. Sega had some bad luck with the last 2 consoles, but they were actually both awesome. Some dick at sega decided people wouldnt want to play dvd's on a console, so went for the cd/gdrom drive instead. If they hadnt been the tiny bit too stingy, that console would have been as big as PS2... Maybe bigger... All because of some Corporate Director DICKHEAD who probably didnt know the first thing about gaming!!!

  • Ohh, im talking about the Dreamcast for the most of that rant.. Just incase anyone was wondering, lol.

  • Great Video, I would say that the PlayStation Version looks much better and runs faster, but I love the Sega Saturn so I don't really care

  • i was blown away when i first played this game on the saturn....the scale and the depth were just amazing with a great haunting melody. again i think the ps1 could always handle this type of game slightly better although there does not appear to be much in it....the saturn did have some great 3d first person games ie exhumed.

  • Another great comparison. Good vids. I prefer the PSX one but the Saturn one looks good as well. I'm pretty sure the Saturn version came out first anyway.

  • came out a few weeks before on the Saturn in the uk anyway. And yeah the PS1 version was better except for the water effects on the Saturn.

  • The PS version has a smoother framerate & runs at a higher resolution, also some of the texture work looks a little better. The Saturn version has a longer draw distance & better water effects.

  • correct me if i am wrong.. but wasnt the saturn version first?

there was an unreleased TR2 for saturn also...

eidos never managed to achieve transparenci on saturn.. sad

  • Production on the saturn version began first but the PS version overtook it & was released before.

I didn't know that TR2 was also planned but it doesn't surprise me it wasn't finished.

Few developers ever did manage transparency, even Sega had trouble doing it.

  • Actually, the Saturn version was released before the PS version. Saturn was released in October 1996 while the PS version was in November 1996.

  • @cuervorockero

yep, saturn version came 1 month earlier than the PSX version

  • @karaokefreak1 Yeah, because it was originally meant to be a Saturn exclusive...but Sony came in with their deep pockets and well...the rest is history.
