that front piece on the N64 is the jumper pack (or memory expansion pack if you bought one), it is basically the RAM of the Nintendo, games are usually saved in cartridges, except for some that do need a memory card to save. The jumper pack is just so that the Nitnendo can run the game and its graphics. :)

I had a similar experience once. I jumped down to kill Trevelyan, but he shot me first and I fell over the edge, but as I had already been killed by the bullet, the screen went red. The killcam showed me standing in the sky (like in this video) and dropping to my knees, but then the next killcams showed the same thing except with Trevelyan and about three other enemies standing around me and shooting me.

I believe this was done by Alex Anderson. You do it by getting shot to death after falling off, but before you fall far enough to end the level.
