He really is one talented artist there can be no doubt about that. He really makes that guitar speak to you! His voice is great. This is a wonderful post. Thank you.
@VicRoseMusic soloing I would say he is more hendrix/srv but he also gets into other styles which are more along the line of bb king and abert king. For those fast raking notes he always does that lead into and out of riffs its srv, for the fragmented riffs with the accents its hendrix. Albert king for the bigs bends and bb for the close repeating riffs, he really has a nice mix of all of those though.Study the penatonic scales
@srvcrossfiresrv i would say he has clapton's pop/blues fusion down. They are really the only two guitarist I can think of who can make a love song that for all accounts is a pop song, but adds blues elements and accents with extended face melting solos in the middle. In that way his overall song structure is like clapton.
@VicRoseMusic Check out a vid that I posted recently, called "John Mayer Shows Off Guitar Tricks" or something like that. He talks about all his musical influences.
you know how hard it is to write a timeless song, a song for that fact. Try picking up a guitar or punching keys on a piano, and write one. you'd be a millionaire. just saying, its harder than thought. especially if you are well versed in music. you'll learn that basically, all the music we try to create has already been done before. We end up ripping others off; listen to the interviews of old musicians, but SOUL is what is VERY important. feel it below ur skin, babe. oh yeah
I no, but go listen to bessy smith and go listen to otis spann and ask yourself which one he is covering. Just like I said, all the people covering hallelujah arnt covering Leonard Cohen, they are covering Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen
It's not Otis Spann. This song is originaly written by Porter Grainger and Everett Robbins and sung in 1923 by Bessy Smith. John only sings (with alot of changes to the original lyrics) the second, third and fourth verses and does not do the entire arangement. There are many versions of this song but the one that stands true to the original and brings it home after the chorus is Eric Claptons'. Nice one by Billy Holliday too.
clapton version is more original but mayer is such a kick ass he is the best guitarrist of th 21 century. clapton a legend a the guy hwo invent solos on rock guitar. Mayer is the next legend his music is real he is not like the pop artist of this era, his music is what we need today, all is not lost
nice version, but claptons is really better, especially claptons voice fits way better to such a dirty blues tune
another point is of course the guitar playing (although the best in claptons version for me is the beginning where he sings and only chris stainton is playing), john mayer is really a fantastic guitarist, but there are not many guitarists who can stand next to eric clapton in improvising guitar solos, and john isn't in that league yet, perhaps in some years
How about when they played Bryant Park on GMA and JM took the first solo, and when he tried to give it back to Eric, EC gave him the nod to keep going? Seems like a passing of the torch to me. John has won 5 or so grammys, sold over 15 million records, and has played with all the blues greats, along with making a mainstream blues song a #1 pop hit (gravity). Not in his league? You're right. Clapton isn't in John's league, he's got some catching up to do.
i did never criticise mayers abilities, he IS a fantastic guitarist, and i can understand that if you are a fan of his you like his playing more than claptons, it was the same with me, but i agree that there are many guitarists that are better technically (feeling is anyway something you have or you don't), and though I don't listen to them much i accept them as better
but in this case you can't disagree that clapton got experiences john mayer just doesn't have in life aswell as in music/guitar

i don't think that Clapton is better than John Mayer because John have much more feeling than Clapton... if Clapton play's a solo he always have to shred,,,
Very sweet rendition of a blues standard. Mayer is one talented dude.

@ak231510 Spot on. I would like to add some Clapton to the mix, especially with tone. I'm probably way off, but oh well! It's great music! Enjoy it!
