Swiss k31 will beat all rifles of WW2. Just a damn good and accurate rifle. Better yet the GP11 Swiss ammo is military grade and its just awesome stuff
I have a nice 1967 finn m-39 built on a 1920 tula receiver. Also a 1942 Swiss k-31. I shoot both on a regular basis. I love them both, but right now the k-31 is kicking ass over the m-39 in accurate fire. Maybe I don't have the correct hold on the m-39 yet , but open sights the swiss is the better of the 2. Gotta hand it to the Finns though, it sure is one well built rifle.
I can not judge whether the M39 or the K31 is the better rifle. My father did military service from 1948 to 1978 with his K31, shot countless GP11 and also rifle grenades, carried it through dirt and snow and it still has the first barrel. The rifle is still very accurate, I shoot from time to time with it. In a six shot fire in one minute at a distance of 300 meters I met the 20 centimeter target four times which corresponds to a "four* on the B-4 Swiss orderly target.
is the 7.5mm swiss berdan or boxer primed? the 7.62x54r is berdan primed, which proves difficult if not impossible to handload. when ammo prices keep going up like they do, and the surplus dries up, that might be one more reason to go with the k31... assuming its boxer primed.
@Munky332 The GP11 is berdan primed non corrosive. You can get Prvi Partizan PPU which is boxer primed if you want to reload. Reloading your own to perfection merely matches the quality of the GP11.
Apparently someones never seen a nice tiger stripped k31. Yes some stocks are beech, some walnut. If you've ever seen a nicely restored tiger stripped walnut stock or beech for that matter you'd be feeling a bit stupid for saying the butt ugly m39 stock is nicely figured. thats like saying roseann bar has a nice figure. man I'd hate to see your wife, i think you have a bit of shallow hal syndrome going on.
@MrDonohuea Alpine Birch is superior to beech or walnut in a sub zero artic environment. I think you need to get behind an m39 for a bit. Theyre both superb rifles as stated in my video, and I prefer the k31 to the m39, I think u mad.
@locknloadvideo Sorry i didnt mean to mean knocking your vid. Everything you said is accurate and correct. I do own both rifles and prefer the k31's, I had bought the finns first before I had really gotten into surplus I was just responding to one of the posts. It's great that you took the time to compare them for people who would like to know more about two. However birch, alpine or not is not superior to walnut in anyway. No stock maker would consider using birch or beech when making a stock
Please disreguard davey whatever comments. K31's are one of the best rifles made, military or civilian. Start with a turd and add a heavy barrel, you get a heavy turd. Only a swed mauser competes with the k31 as far as accuracy and build. Trust me im a machinist. K31's have match grade everything, and the machining is not even comparable.
so a question. I'm looking to buy a m39 or a k31, used mostly for target shooting and maybe elk hunting. If you could only get one, which will you choose? these days both are around the $320 mark on GB
@touge242 It just depends on what you want, theyre both superb rifles. Ammo will be cheaper with the M39 so youll probably end up shooting it more. Just for ammo sake Im leaning a little to the M39 side, either way though, you cant go wrong.
When I did my national service in 81-82 we had some gun training on the other small arms in the inventory than the standard issue rk.62, the M39 I had was date stamped 1967! Later I worked in an army warehouse/arsenal where they oiled the barrels of their M39s twice a year, which I did once for the several hundred M39s they still had in the small warehouse.
I'm guessing accuracy isn't your top priority. The m39 is still today one of the best rifles ever made. It will outshoot and out perform the k31 anytime.
By the way, that M39 stock has beautiful figure. The K31 looks like beech wood, although many were made with nice walnut and look better than the one in the vid. The K31 did pretty well last year at the Camp Perry contest, but the K31 promoters had hired the best shot in the country to use their weapon. He could have done the same thing with a slingshot or pea-shooter, given his enormous talent.
Very nice job of comparing. However, I think the Finnish M39 will be kicking the bulky, hard to grip Swiss 31's butt in the national matches eventually. Reason: It's the most accurate military bolt action rifle. Compared with the K31, very few M39s have made it to the US thus far. Only about 100,000 were built all together, and many were lost in the Continuation War with Russia, whereas boatloads of K31's have come to the US. Once shooters experience the M39, it's adios to the K31.
@cpcw06 By that time we already had the RK 62 assault rifle, actually. Anything dated 1970 is a gun assembled from spare parts and stockpiled for emergency use. 20-30 years later the gun was finally obsolete, as we already had assault rifles enough for any emergency, so they were all dumped in the American surplus market. The 1970 M39 you saw was therefore never fired in Finland and was in fact factory new. Nice catch for a discerning buyer.
good general review/compairision......i still like the m39 better though :)

@Munky332 Also be sure to get Redding dies, not the Lees. The lees specs are for the older cartridges and will not form them perfectly.

@Munky332 there is boxer and berdan primed cases for both the calibers. Also, you can reload berdan primed casings.

I got to shoot a friend's Mosin-Nagant and I retract my earlier statements.
Sixguns4fighting 10 months ago
The K31 is a rifleman's rifle. The Mosin-Nagant is made for poorly trained peasant conscripts to be used as a mere handle for the bayonet.

Cool video! I've got one of both, maybe one of these days I'll actually get out an shoot them! Thanks for the vid!

LOL this is like comparing pie to fruitcake.... Obviously the K-31 is the delightful pie and the m39 being the nasty fruit cake!
The k31 is a far more superior rifle in my opinion in EVERY aspect.

The stock of the M39 was originally developed from the K31 in the late 30's. They look like pretty similar.
uspi 1 year ago
M39's were mostly assembled from recycled parts of M91. Mainly only barrels, sights and stocks were made by the finns.
For the green liberal ecofascists it should be a truly weapon of choice. If they wouldn't like to have all guns banned.
