urrrr im learning japanese on my own. Its hard cause with school. and i only get like 3 days (fri , sat, sun. )ugh its hard...I do take notes but i only can read romanjiiiiiii~ well... i don't know all of it (im in 7th grade) but if i see japanese in romanji i can say it real easily (because of the pronunciation) hmm but i really need to learn how to write kanji hiragana katakana and all that XD. btw i really love your video's there just sooo entertaining~ :3 nya~
learning the language could be a bad thing too i mean all that Japanese music i listen will no longer be a bunch of sounds (though i did look at the lyrics to some songs and kind of put two and two while listening, and a few words like watashi (self) and anata (you) i think the best way of learning this language would have to be moving to japan and being forced to learn things to interact with the environment. and to have a friend who speaks both to travel with so you get filled in on things.
I don't believe taking classes is needed for learning a language. When I learnt Spanish nd Swedish I didn't have Youtube or Internet so now it has become so much easier.
Now you can speak over Skype so you can have a conversation now matter where you are.
I'm learning the language with my sister. Though she doesn't seem to be as into it as she used to be... I'm going to be looking at your other videos. You have good tips.
I have the same reason as you. I hope that when I get older I will be moving to Japan... I hope I get lucky...
i like anime, jmusic&jdramas, etc. i think ive been obsessed w/ it since i was 3(?).¬ once have i ever considered learnin the language cuz i didnt rly have a solid reason.&just last year around summer i started wantin 2 learn cuz i began watchin vids bout exchange students in japan on youtube(4 some reason)&now i decided to learn it so i can go myself someday. :)
i'm year 8 i started learning japanese but was harsh!
so gave up for a while then when started up again i have books just like you (i work in a bookshop too so got looooads) and it's still really hard learninmg on my own, i've had a skype tutor for a short while and helped a bunch but now it's all stopped it's really hard again :(
hopefully i'm going exchange nest year, should i wait to learn there or should i keep trying to teach myself~? :S
You can be completely fluent in Japanese without even going to Japan, and without using any stupid textbooks.
And without speaking much.
Actually, one of the biggest myths in language learning is that you must speak in order to be fluent. This is not true. You need to UNDERSTAND what native Japanese are saying before you can speak. If you can't understand what they're saying, how can you even attempt to speak?
I whant to live in Japan, I have learned half of the hiragana, and It's hard because I don't have time and nobody to practice with. Thank you for the video, arigatou ^^
I have video suggestions! I love your videos they are so funny and awesome. I have been watching them since you started. I will love if you talk more your daily life in japan what you do, are you still in school, who is around you and if you can try to show videos like in stores or just normal day and maybe your host family can come out lol:)
Okinawa is NOT part of Japan Lauren! If you told someone from Okinawa that they are Japanese, they would kill you. I know, my aunt is Okinawan.
Also, of everything I said to your last video, all you said was "where are you going?!"... wtf, I am going to college, and you should be too... I want you to get on skype and call me the minute you see this. ON SKYPE, ON THE COMPUTER.
You're so right! There's no ''neverland'' in this world. People are just living in their own way in every county. I realized it, when I lived in Germany.
@sasukeblossom it's American english... not 'American' ... we are speaking the same bloody language, so stick that in your boot in the morning and go have some tea with your crumpets.
I think, the most important thing you have to know about learning basically everything is, that it can't be done in five minutes. Seen from a scientific perspective, learning a language to a native level requires around ten thousand hours respectively 30 years, if you study one hour a day. However, you'll only need 20 % of that amount of time to reach a basic fluency.
In conclusion, the only possibility to learn a foreign language is to love it and to consider it as your most favorite hobby.
I just love your videos :) I have been watching them from the beginning. Your interview vlog really helped me :) I applied for Rotary at the same time you started making videos and will be going to Japan this August with Rotary.
I was just wondering if you could make a tips video. Like a how to survive in Japan, what to bring, useful words, how to make friends and cultural do's and don'ts .
I use Genki in my classroom at my college where I take Japanese. I've been taking it for a year now and Genki is just awesome. But the book alone can't do it, what the best thing is, is our teacher utilizes it as a tool. But in her own way makes it fun and very educational
Almost daily or weekly vlogs would be great. I would like to know about daily life in Japan. Do you eat rice and miso soup every morning or is it bacon and eggs. How about dinner. You have a different perspective, because you live with a Japanese family. Does Rosetta Stone also teach writing or just the language? Enjoy the videos. Thanks.

Have you tried using Heisig's book, "remembering the kanji"? I tried his approach and it helped me learn a lot of characters.
