Hey guys, im doing a presentation on the Mandala. Not just for its beauty but also for its inner meanings and representations. So can someone give me some insight on the Mandala. Thanks in advance.
The monks begin the Mandala sand painting with a ceremony of chants, music and mantra recitation for blessing the site to make it conducive for creating the mandala. Be Cosmic ...
i have made some sand paintings here in hawaii, the maui sand if great for creating art with,it is a lot of fun and connects you to the earth,i love this video,
Wow... I love Mandalas, Especially in the sand, It's fascinating with a really meaningful message behind it ^_^ Buddhism just seems to make more sense than most religieons I've heard of. No offence meant to anyone else of course.

This stuff is amazing. I bet these guys would be GREAT at cake decorating...but no one would know it because they have to smash the cake before it gets to the customer.
This is really cool....very tedious yet fulfilling beyond description. I d love to try it, but my patience has been worn needle thin these last few years. One day....(till then I ll just observe)
The deconstruction of the mandala is a representation of the impermaness in the world. Where all the sand is collected in a jar and then dispersed in a water stream or thrown in the wind from a mountain or sometimes the sand is distributed to everybody present.
@vjalonzo Or every once and a while a chinese general and his staff trample the piece of art just before it's done to show their dominance over other cultures, quite interesting indeed.
dismantle, not destroy. the difference is in the intent.
they disperse it in the water, preferably some body of water that contains life, such as the sea, so that it can be shared with all the living things there. small bits of the sand are also, sometimes, given to people who witness it.
To devote one's entire attention to the creation of a highly organized beautiful thing is to be very much in control of one's actions. Important also to recognize that the sand mandala is a temporary thing and even though the process of making it takes all of the artist's focus, it is only sand that will disperse in the breeze. Humanity must learn not to think of itself as beyond nature, not even in our greatest works.
But the real benefit is only what you really understand of it.
@1oolabob Would it also be to build character through focusing all this time and energy into something but have it take away from you? To relieve your emotional tie to things that have little value and prevent other people being able to break you through destroying material possessions? That's how I see it in a way, to relieve your dependence on objects or things that are tangible (in this case something you worked very hard to produce) and throwing it away, though this isn't the real meaning.
I think this has to be one of the most unique religious rituals in the world. I can't imagine how it must feel to make something like that. Really amazing!
When I still my needlessly busy mind, the patience, the focus, the art and the whole idea of impermanence contained in this video is totally mesmerising.
Everything becomes so much easier when it is lived in the same way like the "construction" of the mandala, and when you see the mandala being "destroyed", the fear of death scatters like the particles of sand, wonderfully illustrating the illusion that form, life, and death really is. Impermanence.
we talked about this in my religion lecture today and at the end of creating one of these they destroy it and it gets a real reaction out of the people watching.
This is a Buddhist teaching that the beauty of life, like mandalas, has a begining and an end. It is impermanent thus we must not cling to it. After the monks are finished doing the Mandala, it is ceremonially destroyed and sands are collected and returned to the sea or stream.
Oh I'm sure China is going to make this art available for us to purchase in no time. Those mainland communist chinese are not sentimental fools. Tuff as a nail communists is what they are.
Point taken about the global impact of their manufacturing industry but let's maintain the distinction between China and Tibet and remind oursleves about what is happening there; Guardian Sept 11th 2005, "Prior to China's invasion, there had been 6,259 Buddhist monasteries and nunneries; by 1976, eight remained." China is now _the_ irrisistable force in the world.
yeah i know what you mean, that kid completely missed the point, fight clubs belief of the abandonment of materail things and the impermanence teachings of the Mandala practically go hand in hand. lol love both
I adore them for being so patient and passionate in making this beautiful piece of art. Great work..

One more questions. What are the real benefits of a sand mandala for the people who create them and for the witnesses?
