  • Did he just press 400 pounds over his head on a thick bar with a false grip?

    ... Damn.

  • I just love how everybody just stops what they're doing to watch him lol

  • Can someone explain why he starts with a mixed grip then switches? Is it not possible to clean with a double overhand?

  • @TehUberCyberBeast fantastic dude.

  • LOL crossfit

  • You Know Youre in a real gym when you see Tires

  • Outstanding athlete and person.

  • Derek is my favorite strongman, but I always wondered why they made this an event, because just the way you have to use your abdominals to rest all that weight it doesnt seem healthy or goodfor your back or anything. But who I am to say im not at their level so they must be doing fine if it is still an event

  • Come on Derek! Lol

  • holy fucking shit fucking woah!

  • Love how he goes to falilure everytime.

  • you know your tough when you train with tires

  • That's power bravo

  • wow,,awesome

  • 10 people can't clean an axle.

  • the 9 ppl who thumb down this have never workout in their life. no reason to thumb down this guy, he a pro

  • @GuardianOfTheDamned i doubt it. some of those people probably thought that wasnt a real workout

  • beef cake

  • i flinch everytime he drops his weights

  • Look Where his Thumbs are... If that Falls, Bye Bye Derek.

  • @xAxBeVaNxBx He has to hold it like that. It's not a 45lb standard bench press bar, it's much thicker.

  • The chuck norris jokes are getting old people. norris has been dead cause Bruce Lee killed him along with his career.

  • somebody set off the lunk alarm

  • Fuckin pussy

  • @jayhawkr08 get a life

  • chuck norris called..he want his toothpick back

  • how does he not break his spine

  • thats an old school way to clean, combo grip then switch to regular :D

  • I just tried this out this evening at my local gym. It's an amazing movement and I will definitely be incorporating it into my training.

  • @jamesaarondevlin Me too. Sensational exercise for total body strength.

  • Ебанутые амерекосы....

    Подъём на грудь просто убил....

  • Aw, heck no! He would SO get the lunk alarm for that. Who does he think he is, the strongest man in the US or something? ;)

  • ...the fuck. at first i thought he was gonna use a mixed grip to clean the bar. i suppose the bar is too thick for him to use a hook grip? also continental cleans look p. fun.

  • shit he's weak, i could curl that EASY! not really i curl mabe 50lb lol

  • @Qaphsiel1 bad joke, you dont even say the correct exercise

  • Maybe if you drop 200lbs you'd be able to do it with PERFECT FORM!!! No jk, great lifting.

  • @Conrad0032 in fact, I thought if he added 200lbs his form would be better lol

  • @aaronalwines with a true axle, the weights wont spin on the bar. That and the thickness of the bar make this the preferred method and that's what Derek is training for

  • i know this sounds like a stupid question but why is it that when strongmen do these lifts they clean it onto their stomachs. it looks very painful imo. Wouldnt it be more effiecient/better to do clean and press the weight olympic style?

  • @aaronalwines trying to grip a 2 inch bar double overhand in order to do an olympic clean is very hard, but at 400lbs on this thing, safe to say not very many people have much chance at that.

Also resting weight on your stomach is perfectly fine. I have rested 400lb glass cabinets on my stomach (I was standing upright and the cabinet was leaning onto me) without any problem and I only weigh 170lbs. This guy is over double my weight and about 3.5x as strong as me (based on deadlifts not OHP)

  • @aaronalwines technically that still is an olympic style clean. the germans do it that way a lot and its called the continental clean. some people find it a lot easier to clean regular bars that way too. the reason he does the continental is because the bar is 2 inches thick. at the hips where you would change hand positions you would have pretty much 0 grip on the bar and dump it. hope i helped.

  • @aaronalwines i actually tried a max axle clean and press yesterday and it is hard to do the traditional clean with that bar. i just couldnt get under it so i had to do the continental too and it made it easier. i still only got 265 though. it is hard.

  • holy shit that bar is thick

  • @Link258 Yeah the axle makes pressing AND deadlifting that bit harder! The grip strength requires is so much more.....I train grip by doing db rows with a towel wrapped around the dumbbell handle (or pullups with a similar setup around the pullup bar).

  • @Link258 thats what she said

  • @Link258 axle bar, if you ever worry about grip this thing will rip your finger/wrists apart :D

  • Comment removed

  • i like how there is a bar with tires on it in the background

  • what happens if JB will tell him that he is asshole?

  • sick, keep working man. Nice lift

  • sick.

  • Then he ate a baby.

  • is this type of clean really safe for the body? LOOKS backbreaking

  • @madmanmanz its safe...i have to lean way back to catch the axle clean (guys who are leaner have to lean farther back to shelf the bar before getting under it), and my back is fine.

  • i wish i could see a 100 pound plate in person

  • "it was too light"

    god damn

  • 0:26 0:29 noob

  • @co2min21 Noob? Can you even deadlift that? Let alone press it

  • @nbandy3 yes i can

  • good job, not olympic that was straight muscled up

  • 0:50 - 0:51 justin bieber on background fucked the video

  • nobody should dislike/hate on what this guy just did. first of all cleaning 400lbs in fuking amazing. not many people can do that and then pressing it is even more insane. good job man.

  • His face was turning all kinds of purple.

  • @bostonscott1 Cleaning a heavy weight to the shoulders with the thick bar is extremely hard on the grip. It's really difficult to get the bar high enough, and flip it over ready for the press. The alternate grip makes it easier to grip the bar, as it stops it rolling out from the thumbs. If you watch him doing a "lighter" weight, you'll see that he doesn't need that grip (see Derek Poundstone 303lb Axle for 12).

  • Wow, that is pretty cool how he is able to lower 400 pounds to his chest in total control.

  • wack as hell, he didnt even clean it he was doing all shoulder workouts

  • all those dissing this man want the axel dropping on your head

  • .40 looked near shoulder ending scary

  • I don't understand why people still do this exercise. It is extremely dangerous in many ways. I don't believe you can rest the weight on your body like that in competition. But I could be wrong.

  • @ZaCkOX900 It's really not dangerous as long as the back is supported enough. Just because it's arched doesn't mean it's in a dangerous position. It's just really important to have very strong stabilizing muscles so you don't accidentally give way and break your own back.

  • @ShaolinIronLeg I don't like to argue, but this exercise is one of the most dangerous exercises period. An arm, shoulder, hand, back, all these things can go out from extreme weight lifting, and the weight could be above the head and smash down. IF you think this exercise is pretty safe, you are not aware of the danger with it. You don't have a spotter, and you are the only one that can try to avoid an injury. So again, is this very dangerous? YES very. Doesn't mean you can't do it.

  • @ZaCkOX900 Sure, it's dangerous if you fail at it, but I wasn't talking about that. Olympic lifting is also extremely dangerous, they lose their balance all the time with over 300-400 pounds above their heads. But, that wasn't my argument. I was speaking with the idea that the exercise is not dangerous because of how it's performed.

  • @ShaolinIronLeg and I forgot to mention balance, notice he almost lost his balance. If he does that can go bad too.

  • @ZaCkOX900 This is called a continental clean, it is perfectly legal in strongman and perfectly safe when performed by an experienced lifter. Also this is realistically the only way to get an heavy axel to the shoulders, even Mikhall Koklyaev an experienced oly lifter struggles to full clean 400 on an axle. The axle is a bitch of a piece of equipment really sorts the men from the boys

  • this guy's shoulders/traps/triceps is stronger than my friggen legs man wth!!

  • das gewicht schmeiß ich auf meine mutter

  • fuck i would shit my pants if i was doing that. he doesnt even wrap his thumbs around the bar when hes pressing

  • is that a harcore gym?

  • i wish my gym had tires for weights!!!!

  • That's crazy how he changed his grip in the midst of his rep

  • @liroyals4 I agree, and placing the weight on the wasit.

  • @liroyals4 Not really, the bar was resting on his stomach. Besides, the bar weighs the same on both ends, so it's not like one side will come crashing down if he lets go of it for a split second.

  • @liroyals4 its how the germans did cleans for years they called it the continential.

  • @liroyals4 Well, if he would'nt, he would have some problem pressing with mixed grip..

  • @2Akesater hes not asking a question :)

  • @Bishiup Well, some how he acted suprised, and I was just making fun of him for being, not just dumb, but a retard.

  • @Bishiup Well, some how he acted suprised, and I was just making fun of him for being, not just dumb, but a retard.

  • @Bishiup No, but I'm just stating the obvious. For some reason he was suprised..

  • @2Akesater :P

  • @liroyals4 thats what an axle press is... the weight is too heavy to clean it regular so you need to adjust the grp

  • @TempleOwls224 the different grip is not cause it is too heavy!!! 230 pound weightlifters can clean that weight easily! its because of the size of the bar, its too big to grip it like a standard bar.

  • @liroyals4 not rly, it just means he cant get it off the ground with a double overhand grip, he needs a deadlifting grip to get it off the ground which is pretty pathetic seeing as how he is a strongman

  • @nickmayer152 You use a 2.5" thick bar. That's called a "continental" clean. Also, unlike a normal bar, the axle doesn't rotate on it's axis, so it's virtually impossible unless it's very light to do that.

  • fuckin ridiculous

  • @caseyrmma365 can anybody of you dumb american muddafuckers explain to me why dereck has so much acne on his back? If you watch he´s other movies.........

  • @loki04sw i can explain to you that before you call us Americans dumb, you learn how to spell and use correct grammar, you fuckin' joke.

  • @loki04sw 1. Steroids gives acne. 2. You're an idiot.

  • @Reaps1291 1. Steroids gives acne very rare 2. All Bodybuilders on youtube take steroids

  • fuck this guy is insane !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whoaooo thats power there ,no too much technique but a lot of powerrrrr...Wooowwww..Congrat...

  • He would clean a lot more weight if he did it proper.

  • @sillymesilly no he wouldn't This bar is impossible to "proper clean", not even Misha Koklyaev could, and he could clean and jerk 550 lbs on a regular bar lol

  • @sillymesilly this bar is thick, i dont think anyone can clean it

  • that false grip looks dangerous

  • could've been a terrible shoulder/pec injury on that 2nd press, nicely controlled though.

  • is this a retro fitness?

  • @pskizzle Yeah, that's what it seems like, although i gotta say my retro fitness is nowhere near as good as this one, theres no bumpers or anything so imagine that is Derek's equipment.

  • Bars wayyy too Thicckkkk Broooseffff.

  • Bad ass Check out a few of my vids.

  • derek is one of the world strongest man in the world, no doubts about it, but this is not the true clean and press. In the real clean and press you shouldn't bending the knees in the press phase at all. no disrepect for him at all ;)

  • @portugaljoao777 We all wish we could do what DP does. While this type bar is harder to shoulder, seems like it wouldn't be harder to press. Let's give the devil his due. His name was Bill March. Extremely strict no leg movement no layback 390 military press at 228 body weight Nationals 1969. It went up like an elevator. To my knowledge, March and Marvin Eder have the best vertical press by merit of just about anyone of modern times. Mladen Kuchev's 347 "press" at 149 was severe cheat.

  • @portugaljoao777 it's a PUSH press lol Not a strict press, but well, it works on strongman lol

  • can i get a membership to that gym please?

  • What happened 2 derek at this years world strongest man? he did shit & came 2nd last!

  • @lurchers123 He tore his quad and was not 100% recovered but manned up and competed anyway.

  • Why do strongmen use a technique that is so different from Olympic weightlifters when doing Clean and Jerk?

  • @NendGuy Because Derek's not just doing a normal C&J. That's an axle he's using there, not a standard barbell. Performing a C&J on an axle is very different (and much more difficult) from the C&J's you see olympic lifters do. That's why Derek's lift is done with much more brute strength as opposed to timing and precision.

  • @NendGuy Because the bar is like 4 times thicker.

  • @NendGuy because they are different sports. Just because they both involve weights doesn't mean they are the same thing

  • I can do that for 90 reps. He's shit.

  • That dude looks like The Thing from Fantastic Four :D

  • My principle is that if person in the video is stronger than me I have nothing to say about technique unless he asks for it. Awesome lift. But what does "axle" mean? is is slang for that belt? or bar?

  • @Kelol100 its the bar. Its very thick and makes the lift rediculously hard.

  • Its Shit. Hungarian rekorder use 750lbs!

  • Comment removed

  • that's a stupid comment. I'm 6'ft tall 270 lbs. I work out on a regular basis but unlike white guys I don't need 'roids. FYI, you'd get ktfo so stfu

  • @DeathRate720

    That was kind of ignorant.

Are you insinuating that any strong white guy must be taking roids?

Are you insinuating that all strong non-white guys are clean?

    Get real.

  • @JacktheDaniels STEROIDS!

  • @DeathRate720

Wow. You really closed the debate right there. What a rebuttal. I never saw that one coming. You truly are a master of rhetoric.

...guess I'll just go home now.

  • @DeathRate720 hahah you do realise that every single strength and power event or sport is dominated by White man espeacally strongman. to not risk going into a scienctific answer i just make this simple for you because you obvously stupid and bitter about something related to white man. but when it comes to muscles and strength white man rules.

  • @wpan100 do you realize that Samoans, Tongans and Hawai'ians don't need steroids? But the white man does. But I will say that the white man is good about building a system around knowing when the drug tests are scheduled so they can cycle their steroids appropriately

  • @DeathRate720 c'mon man you don't see the stupidity in that comment i know you must be joking somewhat and there must be some sort of personal issue you have with a individual white man but don't go talking trash about white men on the internet.

  • @wpan100 think Mark Henry..he dominated this year's Arnold Classic without any intense training. He's not white. Enough said

  • @DeathRate720 act mark henry won in 2002 if he competed nowadays he would die he was around only in that year in pro-strongman and the field wasn't that good during the early 00's it is seen as a transitional period and mark henry is the only black man built the way he is in the world probaly and i know that its impossible for me to act know that but i would bet on it.

  • @wpan100 why don't you go shoot some more roids wit your boy-toy Derek Poundsyourstone. You talk like white ppl are the strongest in the world. lol...noT!!! like my Samoan people are weak or something and you are so strong. stop plz! I'm so scared! ba ha ha ha

  • @DeathRate720 i see your problem with WHITEMAN your bitter becuase we dominate international strength sports and hold around 99% of strength-related world records. whiteman are the largest and strongest the colder the climate the larger/stronger the animal but not only coldness the enviroment also has to requre size/strength with a dense super-forest that used to cover the whole of Europe whiteman had to evolve greater strength and size because persistent-hunting no longer was practical.

  • @wpan100 that is a bit unfair on Henry, for a start the Apalon wheels,at that contest no one trained on them like now,and i have seen that contest on DVD,and no one not even Zavicas, has cleaned them has easaly has Henry did,and the jerk over head was even quicker,he did it 2 times then spent a 30secs of the 90 secs, posing to the camara, then did it again,if he had not wasited time he could have done them 5 times, and no one in the world has ever Squated more without a squat suit on than him.

  • @cypionate011 i've seen it also but like my original point zydrunas wasn't as big or strong as he is now it was a transitional peroid and alot of men now can apolon wheel more and alot easyer plus hes squat has been beaten by alot of strongmen with suit you are correct but a powerlifther called andrie malenchev recently obliterated mark henrys raw squat record but the thing is no one really goes for raw but still its a huge achevement.

  • @cypionate011 you can see it on youtube if you type in world record raw squat.

  • @DeathRate720 you are dellusional if you think he didn't do any intense training. Number one, he would be a complete moron not to.

  • @wpan100 ronnie coleman .. enough said " when it comes to muscles " lol..

  • @CaineyRap NO when it comes to muscles and size and strength Strongmen rule colemen is a inflated skinng man. all black people are natually very slim and skinny.

  • Brute strength, but terrible technique. Weightlifters in the 1940’s - 1970’s couldn’t lift as much, but their techniques were like good music -- flowing without interruption.

  • @ozwaldp I wouldn't say so- maybe compared to them- but he still does quite well.

  • @420Vali Yeah, no doubt ... he’s super strong. I just feel for his back especially when he was transitioning from a deadlift grip to an overhead press while 400+ pounds are precariously pushing down on his lower spine.

  • @ozwaldp Oh yeah I didnt notice that. You'd think he would want to use a double overhand grip for the clean. he can obviously do it but it seems like having all the weight on one side of his back would pull something.

  • @420Vali With strongmen they arent so concerned about the olympic form as such. The events they do usually involve bringing a really awkward object up their body to push overhead. If you notice strongmen use brute force when doing these lifts as opposed to olympic lifters' smooth and crisp technique. Pound for pound olympic lifters can move more weight than strongmen anyday, however strongmen just use the lifts to mimmick competition events. I love both forms of training personallly :)

  • @AmusingYeti

This guy is spot on. No way you can properly clean a 2" axle at 400lbs without breaking your wrist.

  • that's a white dude on steroids right there fo sho

  • @DeathRate720

that's gotta be it, if you used the same roids you'd be just as strong! I guess the football players in your area bullied you too much, leaving comments like these...

  • XXXXXL tshitrt

  • i love it that in most of dereks videos you see him miss the last attempt. most people stop early so they're not seen to be failing. derek just goes for it

  • clapping guy didnt get notice..he;'s like fuck it im going home

  • Incredible.

  • guy behind clapping no one knows him hahha random.. ..

  • nice

  • Juggernaut!

  • why does poundstone take a deadlift mix grip when cleaning ? isnt it harder when taking that grip ?

  • @pakibuilder So he can hold on to the bar. 400 lbs is a bit of weight to pick up. If you use an overhand grip it will tend to unlock the fingers.

  • @pakibuilder the bar is 2 inches in diameter i believe. it's not a standard olympic bar but rather an axle bar. it's common practice to mix grip even if you have beastly hands like poundstone. also it's called either an axle clean or a continental clean

  • @FudgeTunneler 3 inches. In competition at least.

  • lol. I wish I could stop feeling like a pansy every time I watch this. Motivation, I guess.

  • Looks easy for Derek.

  • look at that thick ass barbell

  • SICK!

  • I respect your dedication to be able to do that much weight! I gotta say though that my goal is all bout pound for pound and still be able to be agile! Your a big guy definitely no question bout it..a beast! But pound for pound person is always gonna be stronger vs a guy who does 1000pds-1500 max. :)

  • Hossein Rezazedah did 585 pounds at the Olympics in 2008 and has the current record :)

  • @huyurloo Mushallah! Yea thats cuz he got a muslim strength!!! Alhamdulillah and his Iranian :)

  • @huyurloo Mushallah! Thats of a muslim strength he got! Alhumdililah, Rezazedah is Iranian as well :)

  • pure power

  • thats amazing, thats not much less then my deadlifting weight

  • i finally found my hero :)

  • As he tries to lift the weight on his shoulders he showas some real strength. everyone of us here would have failed as it comes to 0:29 . but craze derek even curls it up :D !

  • @krautstampflsepp yea that was unreal strength right there :S he's a beast

  • Luke 7:47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

  • I love derek poundstone as a strong man but i do have a soft spot for maruisz pudzianowski.

  • What a monster! This guy is by far my favorite strongman.

  • scary.

  • Well yes Jang Mi-Ran has done more in c&j, as well three Chinese 'women', but this is with thick axle which makes it a completely different lift. You can't really compare. I'm sure Derek would do a lot more with standard weightlifting bar, but that isn't in strongman competitions so why bother.

  • looks very dangerous..
