@jules8002 You don't know that for sure, now do you? You can't presume to know why Sergio makes the artistic choices he makes. If he were doing it for the sales, don't you think he would have collaborated with the most popular rappers, not the somewhat obscure (what we call underground) ones (with the exception of will.i.am)? Artists like Pharoahe Monch and The Roots don't sell in the hip hop community, what makes you think they will sell to Sergio Mendes' fanbase?
This girls busted away from her brothers, & the Buffalo Springfield @ just the right time!!! She had so many awesome hits, it's almost unbelievable! Sadly missed, but FONDLY remembered!
Love their sound. The girls couldn't be better singers, and the brazilian tempo just adds a unique, interesting flavor to their mix. This really was when music was MUSIC!
I don't really like modern rap, but Sergio Mendes is a complete genius to help that genre of music to appeal to an older generation. My mum and dad are hard-core jazz fans in their 70's and they both like the recent stuff that he's recorded (even had the good fortune of meeting him in person after being fans of him since the mid 60's!).
I saw Sergio in Huntington, WV, and indeed he invited a rapper onstage and they worked very well together. Mendez remains one of the most talented and influential jazz musicians around! I've been enjoying his music for over 40 years now.
@windstorm1000 I agree that it would probably sound good by anyone (talented) who chose to perform it, but this is the only version to break the Billboard top 10. I also have always loved their version of The Fool on the Hill.
This is, of course, a Bachrach/David classic, but I have to give props to Dave Grusin for the arrangement on this Sergio Mendes/Brasil '66 version. I remember this used to sound fantastic on the brand new RCA console my parents bought back in 1968!
DW- I'm trying not to be prejudged, but anytime I see a song that Lani has recorded but sang by another- I just can't listen to it- you have ruined me girl but in a good way.
Janis Hansen's one and only Sergio Mendes solo vocal released after she had left the band in 1968 being replaced by Karen Philipp. Most of early Brasil 66 female vocals were done by Lani Hall of course.

I have loved this song since the first time I heard it so many years ago..............it's timeless, and I love it just as much today............absolutely wonderful
THis song sings good with almost anybody singing it---indestructable--a classic--and its fabulous here---it has an inherent Latin beat to it--and BRazil 66 just brought that quality out even more. Great great version...beautiful arrangement...beautifully sung. 60's chic. I want a maritini and a pretty lady now!!
@windstorm1000 OOooo! I'm with ya brother! This tune is so tasty, I can hardly stand it! Everything Brazil 66 turned out back then was just... golden! Man, now I need a Mai Tai!

@camking88 yeah, I agree; we know great music when we hear it; our daughter listens to rap music and some of it is not bad; the lyrics often are good; I am so happy to see that so many people here love Sergio Mendez and Brasil '66 and '77 and '88!
@camking88 No disrespect intended but just because Sergio Mendes collaborates with a rap group doesn't automatically make it good. Commercially produced rap music of today has the same quality as all of the made in china stuff Walmart sells. I'll listen to old school rap music any day over today's offerings.
@gypsyThree97 I'm not saying all rappers are good. Just as in every other genre, there are good artists and there are bad artists. I'm saying that Sergio Mendes has respect for the art form, not that he will collaborate with just anyone who raps just because he likes rap music. People tend to put all rappers and all rap music in one bag, without allowing for the diversity that they allow other genres. I'm sure Sergio isn't dying to collaborate with Soulja Boy, but maybe Mos Def, Q-Tip, Kanye.
@hotmn4u So what are you saying about Sergio Mendes? Or others like Aretha Franklin, Carlos Santana, and even Paul McCartney who has also collaborated with rappers over the years. As I said before, just because YOU think rap is crap does not mean everyone else does.
@hotmn4u Why should I get over it, I don't make rap music and I don't collaborate with those who do. That would be Sergio Mendes, Aretha Franklin, Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Aerosmith, Elton John, the list goes on. They're the ones contributing this "crappy" music. I can see you're set in your beliefs and I respect that. But I will rather take the word of those I just named on what is or isn't real music.
@camking88 The fact that Mendes may have lost his mind, talent or taste in the past decade or two does NOT validate Rap as a genre. It's garbage, period.
@camking88 and since when was criticizing a genre unacceptable? It's just as much a part of the dialogue of criticism as reviewing an individual artist or song. You may still hate a singer even though they may have one song out of fifty that you actually like.
@hyperion30000 I never said criticizing a genre is unacceptable. What is unacceptable is you and others on here stating your OPINION as if it is an undeniable FACT. You think rap is garbage, that is fine for you. But Sergio Mendes, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, even Miles fucking Davis DON'T think it is. What makes your opinion more valid than theirs? What makes your opinion more valid than mine?
Love their harmonies--and the band is fabulous. Immortal song by David/Bacharach. So elegant --cool. I see myself in a penthouse with a great view of L.A--the sun going down, with cavier, champagne and a pretty lady--those images always come into mind!!!
@zman117 ..so if thats true- WHY are looking at music that was written 25 years before you were born ???... now, get to sleep son, its past your bedtime....!!!
@zman117 ..well then there you go friend- you just contradicted yourself- by saying that YOUTUBE was 'your'generation- guess the 'age-limit thing goes both ways , n'est pas ?
@superbruce NEGATIVE GHOSTRIDER. AGE IS A MINDSET. YOU OBVIOUSLY DONT HAVE THE MINDSET FOR SUCH "CHILDISH" ANTICS AS YOUTUBE, SO YOU YOURSELF SUBCONCIOUSLY LIMIT YOUR OWN VIEW POINT RENDERING YOU JUDGEMENTAL.
@zman117 ...You were the one that admitted that Youtube is fun for all ages- I NEVER said that it wasn't. Judgment- is an assessment that each and everyone of us participates in EVERYDAY! It is a simple evaluation that one thing is better than an other- it is that simple. You expected persons to "LOL" at your crude comments abot your sexual exploits, and it backfired on you- and here I am am arguing with a poorly educated, unsophisticated moron...what a waste of time.
@superbruce LOLSSSS. BUT IN COMPARISON WHOSE THE MORON FOR ARGUING WITH THE MORON? IF YOU WERE SO SMART YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE COMMENT FOR WHAT IT WAS INSTEAD OF SEEING YOURSELF AS AN AUTHORITATIVE FIGURE ON A PUBLIC WEBSITE. SO YOU STOOPED DOWN TO MY LEVEL PAL.
I love this song! I grew up with this kind of music! I had the privilege of finally seeing Sergio Mendez perform at a concert several years ago, in the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, CA. The company that I worked for sponsored the event and Mr. Mendez came into the VIP tent and my dad and I were able to meet him, and we I got to shake his hand. I guess the performers must be different but they sounded great!
@jspiker1974 Lani and Herb are, imo, an unappreciated American prince and princess story....and the coming together of Sergio with Lani and Herb's help with arrangements was a pop music perfect storm of its day..in my thinking
Well said. Great insight. Great sadness in hearing it again for me, though -- as the world that first heard it, the Milieu of the Old American Republic, is now gone, perished on the greed of the consumer culture. We could have been citizens. We settled for being consumers. And the disparity between this music and today's stands as proof.
@408knw Yes, I have to agree with you there---you listen to this---and then you see what people are listening to now....well, can we grab some Brazil 66 albums, blast into outer space and create a new untainted musical world somewhere else, right??!!
@hyperman1010 This is one of the big misconceptions about Astrud Gilberto: She never worked with Sergio Mendes (she talked about it in a 2002 interview). I think people thought that Sergio worked with every Brazilian artist (or confused Lani Hall with Astrud); the other big misconception was that she was married to Jobim.
@hyperman1010 thanks, jim. i always thought it was astrud that worked with sergio mendes in the 60s. i remember her beautiful voice for the three bars she sang for eastern airlines.
i couldn't agree more! so sad what happened to beAUTIFUL soul music from the past.

@utubemusiccritic pls do not dis aliens, these individuals are clearly earless mutants

@superbruce MUSIC HAS NO AGE LIMIT. IT NEVER EXPIRES OR GETS OLD. SEE WITH YOUR MIND NOT YOUR EYES. BOOMROASTED
zman117 1 year ago
@zman117 ..well then there you go friend- you just contradicted yourself- by saying that YOUTUBE was 'your'generation- guess the 'age-limit thing goes both ways , n'est pas ?
superbruce 1 year ago
@superbruce NEGATIVE GHOSTRIDER. AGE IS A MINDSET. YOU OBVIOUSLY DONT HAVE THE MINDSET FOR SUCH "CHILDISH" ANTICS AS YOUTUBE, SO YOU YOURSELF SUBCONCIOUSLY LIMIT YOUR OWN VIEW POINT RENDERING YOU JUDGEMENTAL.
zman117 1 year ago
@zman117 ...You were the one that admitted that Youtube is fun for all ages- I NEVER said that it wasn't. Judgment- is an assessment that each and everyone of us participates in EVERYDAY! It is a simple evaluation that one thing is better than an other- it is that simple. You expected persons to "LOL" at your crude comments abot your sexual exploits, and it backfired on you- and here I am am arguing with a poorly educated, unsophisticated moron...what a waste of time.
superbruce 1 year ago
@superbruce LOLSSSS. BUT IN COMPARISON WHOSE THE MORON FOR ARGUING WITH THE MORON? IF YOU WERE SO SMART YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE COMMENT FOR WHAT IT WAS INSTEAD OF SEEING YOURSELF AS AN AUTHORITATIVE FIGURE ON A PUBLIC WEBSITE. SO YOU STOOPED DOWN TO MY LEVEL PAL.

I fell in love with Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66 back in 1967. Love that beat.

Sometime the phrase "timeless" is used to carelessly. This song and album are without a doubt "timeless". Thanks for adding it out here.

Lani Hall is married to Herb Alpert and they still tour together. Here voice is still magical.
jspiker1974 1 year ago 2
@jspiker1974 Lani and Herb are, imo, an unappreciated American prince and princess story....and the coming together of Sergio with Lani and Herb's help with arrangements was a pop music perfect storm of its day..in my thinking

Compare with Dusty Springfield's version. It's like comparing two shiny
diamonds. In the hands of a great artist, this song can do no wrong.
BRUC2016 1 year ago
Well said. Great insight. Great sadness in hearing it again for me, though -- as the world that first heard it, the Milieu of the Old American Republic, is now gone, perished on the greed of the consumer culture. We could have been citizens. We settled for being consumers. And the disparity between this music and today's stands as proof.
408knw 1 year ago
@408knw Yes, I have to agree with you there---you listen to this---and then you see what people are listening to now....well, can we grab some Brazil 66 albums, blast into outer space and create a new untainted musical world somewhere else, right??!!

was this when astrud gilberto was working with him?
hyperman1010 1 year ago
@hyperman1010 This is one of the big misconceptions about Astrud Gilberto: She never worked with Sergio Mendes (she talked about it in a 2002 interview). I think people thought that Sergio worked with every Brazilian artist (or confused Lani Hall with Astrud); the other big misconception was that she was married to Jobim.
jimraw1 1 year ago
@hyperman1010 thanks, jim. i always thought it was astrud that worked with sergio mendes in the 60s. i remember her beautiful voice for the three bars she sang for eastern airlines.
