I should add ... The president of the AMT is from a rich and well known family from Rigaud. He was born and raised in Rigaud. Like a lot of others; power has made him forgot his heritage, n'est-ce pas Joël?
Also, If you eliminate the trains the capital investment is lost forever. If you cut half the trains, the fixed costs of the right-of-way and the shops just increase the losses on what is left. Trains costs far less money per passenger-mile than most bus systems any where. The rider decline is the result of less service of less service over time. Trains are far more energy efficient.
RE: "I agree with the AMT and Rigaud's decision to cut the service."
Your comments are misleading. It is true that the Rigaud service was losing money but it would have lost less with more riders. It is also true that a convenient train schedule would have does more work than all the entire CITPI bus system which loses far more money than than the Rigaud leg.
I agree with the AMT and Rigaud's decision to cut the service. It is utterly inefficient to operate a train for 10-20 people a day. It is expensive and also environmentally unfriendly. The real shame in all this is that the CITPI bus service that has been extended to Rigaud is only a bit better than the train was at two departures instead of one. That is where the town let its people down. They could have afforded much better on $160000.
This is a real shame....what will be next the closure of the Hudson train? With the influx of the increasing population in this region, the closure of this service is senseless and absurd.
The AMT has taken a very, very bad decision to remove this train at the town of Rigaud. We are in 2010 and the train is a good symbol to fight against greenhouse gases and pollution.
I cannot understand the argument of the AMT and the town of Rigaud to remove this commuter train.
