Very interesting video and thanks for putting it together and sharing this. I am about to attempt a similar task and have a lot of highly figured hard (very dry) maple. I understand that one of your handles was also made of maple, would you recommend it for use on a small camp hatchet? Also can you use dry or should it be somewhat green?
You've got my respect. I've tried doing exactly this before in the woods, and it's really freakin' hard! You make this looks incredibly easy. Good job!
Dude. Seriously!? That was AWESOME. One question though, what's with all that traffic yet the image of woodland behind you? You sure you didn't just add in all those motorcycle sounds?
Back in my day we could have built an entire house in the time it took you to make a blamed hatchet handle! Danged youth of today! Lazy, I say! Watch this....BAM....I just mowed the lawn and changed the oil in my car! Took 23 seconds! BAM! Just mowed *your* lawn! BAM! Just plowed the lower twenty! BAM! Just tripped over that damned cat! We slept two hours a night if we were lucky and we were happy! Going to go and build a house now. Third one today. Lazy, I tell you!
great video simon, my wood jewels carving knife still hasn't seen as much use. I'd have to get that secondary bevel out, not sure why the knife came that way. was it the same for you?
Nice work! Watched every second. I'm wanting to do this very thing. How did you cut the handle to accept the wedge that you drove in from the top? Did you have to remove alot of wood to account for the wedge? Great work.
So...explain to me how much sense it makes to use an axe that has a handle already to carve an axe handle! What happens if you are out in the bush and your handle breaks? I am not doubting that you could do it with other tools besides an axe, just think it would have made more sense to not use a good axe to repair a broken one lol. That said, good bushcraft man! You got more skills than I do.
@dmansley1986 If you have a larger heavier knife, like around six inches, its not too hard to lightly chop with it and chip out/chisel pieces like you can do with an axe. I have actually carved an axe handle with just a swiss army knife, it was really hard but it can be done.
@JustinBaker2567 Good call, and actually the point I was trying to make. If your axe handle is broken you wouldn't use a good axe to make a new one. Because unless you're at home or you like to carry extra weight that you don't need to carry in the bush, you're not going to have a 2nd axe to make the new handle with.
pretty decent work. would that be a snow and neally axe? the old ones are way better IMO. they have harder blades. after you rough out the board it goes way faster it you have a draw knife or a proper carpenters hatcet, but either way, good job.
Very nice viideo. Great to watch from start to finish. I was surprised you used glue? Have you tried using linseed oil to soak the handle end and wedge/s (I use 3 wedges) when you do the final wedged assembly? It greatly helps reduce water soaking into the end grain.
Great vid!!! I have a Double bit axe that was my Great Grandfathers but the handle is in very poor condition. This makes me want to try making a handle for it.
Thank YOU! I learn much form you. I'll pass this to my kids.

Also, what was that wood that you made the axe handle with? Here the available wood is TOO hard (I live in Saudi Arabia). Would 4x4 pallet wood work?

@dmansley1986 It's because you should usually carry 2 ax-heads in the bush, or an ax-and-hatchet combo.
