  • Excellent video!! Content was wonderful, and the presentation engaging, clear, and relevant. Excellent!

  • You're correct, themodnoc1213, that some of these apps are no longer available. If I made this video today, it would look different in several important respects. But the basic concept--that of maintaining connectivity to people and institutions from whom I can learn things--stays the same. Apps come and go, and even content comes and goes too, but a PLN will be there through all the changes.

  • Does one have to be a connectivist to buy into this PLN stuff?

After viewing this video, I feel overwhelmed!!! Why do there have to be so many apps in a PLN? Can't we have just one tool that does it all? Some of these apps are not available anymore. What happens when my PLN is gone, and along with it, my support network? It just seems to me that there is too much time spent learning the technology and not enough time learning content.

  • Thanks for the kind words, TLT. You're welcome to use it in any way you see fit. I created the first part with Keynote (Apple's presentation program--great animation tools) and the second part with Prezi. I captured and edited them together with ScreenFlow--a remarkable realtime desktop video program.

  • Very nice video, clear and succinct points. I'm hoping to use parts of it in a couple of weeks if that is OK (duly credited!) with a few teacher-librarians.

I also wondered what tools you used to create it (what applications? what editing suite?) Thanks!

  • Thanks for this - will be useful to show to "the team". :)

  • Excellent resource. Am going to use it in my training video

  • This is wonderful!!!!!! Thanks so very much!!!!!

  • sggc30: You're more than welcome to use the PLN video in any way you see fit. I'm glad it was of use to you.

  • Hello, I have embedded your video in a podcourse and Moodle PD course that I created for my school site titled "PLN 101". It is used as a concrete example of "one educator's PLN; what's in it and how he uses it". As you made the video embeddable, I went ahead and used it. If for some reason you do not want me to use the video, just let me know and I will look for a replacement. Thanks! BTW: If you would like the link just ask! I tried to include it, but got denied. :)

  • Thank you for this informative video. You might enjoy my post along these same lines at ScholarTechOnline.

  • Thank you so much for putting this video together! It was such a clear visual representation of a topic that is not easy for many people to grasp. I am a recently licensed elementary school teacher and I honestly believe that I am responsible for my own professional development. I can clearly see the value of creating my own PLN from this video.

  • @KTorski Thank you, KT. It's so nice to hear that the video is useful for others.

  • Thank you, PattMacc. It's nice to know that I can be of some help to you--sort of a fellow Ohioan (graduated from Oberlin a LONG time ago).

  • Thus far, this is the best explanation and illustration of PLNs I've discovered. I'm an instructor at the U. of Toledo and plan to link to this wonderful resource. Thank you Skip!

  • Nicely done ... congrats !

  • Thanks HighSchoolC and others for the positive comments. I appreciate them very much, and it's fun to see where the video gets shown.

  • Thank you for this. It is graphically pleasing and content rich. It was shared with me via an eLC for Principals across the state of North Carolina. I will be sharing it with our high school faculty.

  • Whoa... huge thanks to Karenne for sharing this gem.

Skip... this is brilliant. A much needed guide for what we believe is the new standard for public ed.

    Thank you.

  • Super video, Skip! I think it's the most professional and easy-to-understand, I've seen... will use in training sessions! Karenne

  • Thanks for the kind words. The first part was done with Keynote (Apple's equivalent of PPT) and the second half was done with Prezi. They were put together on the desktop with ScreenFlow--probably the best video/presentation investment you could make for your Mac.

  • Great explanation, Skip, and well illustrated too. I really like how you visualized the current state of your PLN. Would you remind me of the name of the app you used to create this, please?
