The song isn't really about "wife beating" it's about the violence blacks faced from whites in the Jim Crow south. In essence it's a protest song in disguise. Black singers couldn't sing about the abuse they faced from whites without getting arrested or more likely beaten and lynched so they covered the meanings in songs.

It was common for the white man or society to be the "man" in the song because of the powerful position in the relationship. Your southern can is mine = Yer black ass is mine

That is ridiculous, it is a genre of music called Hokum which came from ragtime and blues. It is novelty and dance music, nothing in this song is serious, it is all tongue-in-cheek bravado. Blind willie Mctell was a master of this genre, check out Jim Jackson, Blind Boy Fuller, The Hokum Boys, Papa Charlie Jackson, Daddy Stovepipe and Tampa Red. Although they did do serious songs, this is not one of them and you are reading far too much into it.

It took me a while to truly understand and love this song. Ive been listening to the stripes since i was 11. They were the first band i became obsessed and addicted to. Their first 4 albums are completely amazing, their first album is like masturbating while drinking water and watching spongebob (which is a good thing)...next to the invention of Jesus Christ and the virgin marry...the white stripes is the best thing that has happened to our existence

generally when you cover a song, you at least try to change it. all i can notice diferent is a worse singing voice, a tambourine (spelling?) and the very occasional bass drum thump.

blind willie mctell's version was 1, pretty well the same, and 2, just.. better. even the recording quality seemed lacking in this. Mctell recorded it in the 30's (1933 i believe) and it still kicks the piss out of this disgraceful peice of shit.
