The song isn't really about "wife beating" it's about the violence blacks faced from whites in the Jim Crow south. In essence it's a protest song in disguise. Black singers couldn't sing about the abuse they faced from whites without getting arrested or more likely beaten and lynched so they covered the meanings in songs.
It was common for the white man or society to be the "man" in the song because of the powerful position in the relationship. Your southern can is mine = Yer black ass is mine
That is ridiculous, it is a genre of music called Hokum which came from ragtime and blues. It is novelty and dance music, nothing in this song is serious, it is all tongue-in-cheek bravado. Blind willie Mctell was a master of this genre, check out Jim Jackson, Blind Boy Fuller, The Hokum Boys, Papa Charlie Jackson, Daddy Stovepipe and Tampa Red. Although they did do serious songs, this is not one of them and you are reading far too much into it.
the original is a masterpiece and can never be topped. With that said Jack white does give something a little extra to the song, as with all his other blues covers
Yea and its a very old song and its so funny how alot of people dont know what "your southern can belongs to me" really means lol... Your ass belongs to me
@mccarthy9103 THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!! i loved the stripes like crazy then i realized it wasnt him really makin this up on his own. i still love jack white's his playing changed my mindset towards innovation and experimenting w/ tuning and style but hes only ripping the greatest musicians of the blues. real blues. so i've migrated to all the greats instead.
It took me a while to truly understand and love this song. Ive been listening to the stripes since i was 11. They were the first band i became obsessed and addicted to. Their first 4 albums are completely amazing, their first album is like masturbating while drinking water and watching spongebob (which is a good thing)...next to the invention of Jesus Christ and the virgin marry...the white stripes is the best thing that has happened to our existence
@nighteen70nine very true--notice i said the "invention" or better yet the hybrid of "Horus"... I don't believe in God even though I saw him 2 times...once in 1998 at a Dollar General and the other was 2 weeks ago at wal-mart. But yeah I pray to the white stripes and so far...I've had 4 fulfilled wishes, so.....thanks white stripes!!!! :)
the words are so hard to hear at the chorus, ive read a few different versions of them but none seem right , anyone any ideas? been looking for ages....sounds a bit like "baby you should something something to me"???
Southern Can is a "ragtime" song. Obviously you don't know the difference between blues and ragtime. That doesn't surprise me, you don't sound very smart.
A ragtime chord progression is like this
Ragtime Progressions
(I-VI7-II7-V7)
Blues chord progression is like this
Blues progressions
(I-IV-I-V7-IV-I)
I guess it all sounds the same to an idiot like you. XD
I do not "label" things, They are what they are. You just do not know the difference. Ragtime and Blues really are not that similar if you understand anything about music. How ever there are a lot of idiots like you out there who think that it all sounds the same to them. There is an old saying you should adhere to.
"It is better keep you mouth shut and let people think you are stupid, then to open it and remove all doubt".
It is a blues song, not ragtime at all. This is what I am talking about. There is big difference in the genres, to say they are the same is an insult to both and an admission that all old music sounds the same. You should check out ragtimeDorianHenry's channel, tons of great ragtime music. You may be able to differentiate between Blues and Ragtime. I am not "caught up in labeling" things, I correctly identified a ragtime song and you called me a retard. You have the problem.
What the fuck are you talking about. I never said McTell wasn't (if that is what you meant) a "blues" musician, he has done a lot of great blues songs. I commented on this song which is ragtime and covered very well by the White Stripes. I heard Sting singing Irish Celtic songs last night on PBS, that doesn't mean that Celtic music and Rock and Roll are the same thing, or that because he did a good job singing Celtic music that he is not a great rocker. grow up!
As much as I like the idea of contemporary musicians paying homage to past blues masters, this cover sounds like an ineffectual folk hootenany with very little of the original charm, humor, and guitar skill of the original. But it was a nice thought...
I love the old version of this song, but for once I don't think White Stripes have nailed it. Willie sounds like his smiling while he's smiling, Jack don't..
Haha no. I was replying to you that I, personally, don't think this cover is very similar to the original. I've heard Blind Willie's version countless times and I know that this does not sound much like it.
then you are retarded! even the voice is similar. you should listen to it again, it is just over on the right in "related videos". It is almost identical.
what are you, like 6 years old? what the fuck are you saying now? because you were saying that blues and ragtime are very similar and now you are saying they are very different? And sting sucks? you really are an idiot aren't you.

It's about this dude who beats his wife because he's an alcoholic. He's a big shot for this woman. He's got goons and this woman is stuck with this man because he's lonely...That's what I hear...
Im sorry, I read through the comments found that this isn't actually a cover of Souther Can is Mine, but actually a cover of a different version called Southern Can Mama.
Southern Can is Mine, Southern Can Mama, is the same song. Blind Willie has a slower tempo version, but they are the same. You are entitled to you opinion if you don't like the White Stripes version, but it is a hell of a stretch to say that it is not true to the original.
I am not really a White Stripes fan but I am a huge Blind Willie Mctell fan and Southern Can Is Mine from 1931 is one of my favorite BWM songs. They did a pretty good job covering this song and I love the Blind Willie and John Lomax chatter at the end.
stop arguing about whether blues singers are all depressed or poor, it aint about that, cant we just enjoy this song without having to argue about pointless shite?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i lied. i just have to point one last thing out, after weeiepricon said it.
"i won't say that a rich guy can't have the blues, but im sure that not all blues players in history were depressed"
the musicians who he commonly rip off lived and died poor men. alot of them had to work one HELL of a lot more then Jack ever has had to in his life time to get the short end of the stick. i dont think they all were depressed, but i think all of the authentic ones sang about their lives.
It's incredible that you would comment so passionatley on something you clearly know nothing about!!Blind Willie McTell has been a huge influence for Jack White and him covering one of Willie's songs is about respect for the man and his music. If you have ever heard Jack talk about his passion for the blues and how it has influenced his entire musical career you would know this.
Its a cover, very rarley to covers surpass the originals, but its still a great cover... if it wasnt for the White stripes covering song like this I wouldnt know anything about past greats like Robert johnson, Blind Willie and Son house etc.
Ok just looked at some rory Gallagher stuff, its pretty cool actually, but it seemed he played primarlily in the 60-70's, me being born in 1990 I wouldnt have heard of him, so he wouldnt be able to influence me, but The White Stripes are playing now and are now influencing a new generation...
well i can respect that point, but just to clarify, rory played from about 1967 until he died in 1995. Granted I dont think he sounded too good after 1992 because he got pretty bloated from the meds he was on and his drinking, but he was still a class act.
my main issue with the white stripes comes from people telling me how great "Their songs are." what makes me angry is how no one respects where music came from anymore. im truly dissapointed by me generation. I was born in 1992.
Hey now you cant hate on the White Stipes because a couple of ignorant fans havent researched enough or whatever... If you are accusing Jack White of not respecting where music comes from you are very confused
But if you mean the majority of people who listen to music then I totally agree with you... but I suppose we shouldnt be complaining, use it as encouragement to go out there and open peoples eyes to real music!! Watching a couple vids you've already begun =)
well thats just one of my reasons. most people i've talked to like to watch the white stripes because, and i quote, "his wife stomps the bass drum so hard her tits hit her in the chin"
i have alot of reasons to dislike jack. rich people playing blues music just dosnt work. he's married, loaded, and on top of the world. he has no place to be singing about most of what he sings about.. but im sure im going to get a retaliation of "anyone can have the blues" so i'll leave it there.
i won't say that a rich guy can't have the blues, but im sure that not all blues players in history were depressed. don't you think its childish to dislike jack because he's happy?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
generally when you cover a song, you at least try to change it. all i can notice diferent is a worse singing voice, a tambourine (spelling?) and the very occasional bass drum thump.
blind willie mctell's version was 1, pretty well the same, and 2, just.. better. even the recording quality seemed lacking in this. Mctell recorded it in the 30's (1933 i believe) and it still kicks the piss out of this disgraceful peice of shit.
jessupar: There's a psychological aspect in White Stripes music. Everything is basic because it is created and played like a child would. Meg's simple drumming, Jack primarily using basic chords, and his singing/ yelling, sometimes without regard for tone, but for feeling. Those are all infantile qualities. You don't see and hear that? I think people like White Stripes because the child-like mannerisms bring out their inner child.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i appreciate music that requires talent to play. thank you for effectively proving my point that they have none. im done with replying and arguing on these videos, and im sure the poster dosnt appreciate it either, though it has gained it a fair number of comments. goodbye.
Jack White is honestly one of the best guitarists around right now. He obviously doesn't show off on this song, but listen to some others or search "Jack White solo"
looove it!!! The White Stripes are the BEST ever!!!

It's about this dude who beats his wife because he's an alcoholic. He's a big shot for this woman. He's got goons and this woman is stuck with this man because he's lonely...That's what I hear...

What are you talking about, "your southern can is mine"?
bluegsp 1 year ago
That's pretty much the gist of it. It is ridiculously misogynistic but still a good song, and a good cover of McTell.
nichmars 1 year ago
Im sorry, I read through the comments found that this isn't actually a cover of Souther Can is Mine, but actually a cover of a different version called Southern Can Mama.
zezimaowner123 2 years ago
Southern Can is Mine, Southern Can Mama, is the same song. Blind Willie has a slower tempo version, but they are the same. You are entitled to you opinion if you don't like the White Stripes version, but it is a hell of a stretch to say that it is not true to the original.
bluegsp 2 years ago
This is a nice cover, almost sounds like Blind Willie McTell. Don't hear too many covers of old ragtime music. Great Song

Just glad that Jack brings certain music to light: McTell, Beefheart, even The Flamin Groovies! The man's got good taste-

i lied. i just have to point one last thing out, after weeiepricon said it.

"i have alot of reasons to dislike jack. rich people playing blues music just dosnt work. "
You do realize that nearly every musician on the planet plays sad songs, right? This isn't unique to blues.
Seginustemple 3 years ago
every musician doesnt play sad songs...are you stupid there are millions of great blues songs that arent sad...

SmokeyWinters 3 years ago
Its a cover, very rarley to covers surpass the originals, but its still a great cover... if it wasnt for the White stripes covering song like this I wouldnt know anything about past greats like Robert johnson, Blind Willie and Son house etc.
Thank You Jack!

if you have to learn from the white stripes, there is no hope for you. look up rory gallagher.
jessupar 3 years ago
Ok just looked at some rory Gallagher stuff, its pretty cool actually, but it seemed he played primarlily in the 60-70's, me being born in 1990 I wouldnt have heard of him, so he wouldnt be able to influence me, but The White Stripes are playing now and are now influencing a new generation...
blomfield1 3 years ago
well i can respect that point, but just to clarify, rory played from about 1967 until he died in 1995.
I was born in 1992.
jessupar 3 years ago
Hey now you cant hate on the White Stipes because a couple of ignorant fans havent researched enough or whatever... If you are accusing Jack White of not respecting where music comes from you are very confused
But if you mean the majority of people who listen to music then I totally agree with you... but I suppose we shouldnt be complaining, use it as encouragement to go out there and open peoples eyes to real music!! Watching a couple vids you've already begun =)
blomfield1 3 years ago
well thats just one of my reasons. most people i've talked to like to watch the white stripes because, and i quote, "his wife stomps the bass drum so hard her tits hit her in the chin"
i have alot of reasons to dislike jack. rich people playing blues music just dosnt work. he's married, loaded, and on top of the world. he has no place to be singing about most of what he sings about.. but im sure im going to get a retaliation of "anyone can have the blues" so i'll leave it there.
jessupar 3 years ago
i won't say that a rich guy can't have the blues, but im sure that not all blues players in history were depressed. don't you think its childish to dislike jack because he's happy?

jesuppar has a point. The White Stripes version really drags in comparison. I wouldn't call it a "disgusting piece of shit," though.
You really have to hear Blind Willie McTell's original. It's perfect.

generally when you cover a song, you at least try to change it. all i can notice diferent is a worse singing voice, a tambourine (spelling?) and the very occasional bass drum thump.
blind willie mctell's version was 1, pretty well the same, and 2, just.. better. even the recording quality seemed lacking in this. Mctell recorded it in the 30's (1933 i believe) and it still kicks the piss out of this disgraceful peice of shit.

Garage Rock purposely uses low-tech recording techniques
Blucius13 3 years ago 3
jessupar: There's a psychological aspect in White Stripes music.
It is simple for a PURPOSE.

Jack White is honestly one of the best guitarists around right now. He obviously doesn't show off on this song, but listen to some others or search "Jack White solo"
