When you think about it, graphically this ident was amazing for 1982. It even holds up well today. I know that it was computer generated, or at least part of it was, but does anyone have information on how it was done?
I think i was watching channel 4 a bit on its 25th birthday, now I have to wait until 2032 until they show these idents again, thats if channel 4 lasts that long that is!
Channel 4 abandoned the "4score" theme because it was costing them a fortune in royalties paid to the composer of 4score, and they had to pay every time it was used... :(
In the description you say that you wonder why they abandoned it, well they didn't really (they replaced it!) but what I want to say is that it did last a considerable amount of time (as well as the other various idents seen in this video). In fact, if my maths serves me right they lasted thirteen years before they were replaced with the circles idents, which only lasted three years before being replaced with the much better square idents, and then being replaced with the 3D logo we have today.
They're still there - the logo's been consistant for 25 years with very little modification (not counting the shapes it's been kept in!) and the idents they've got now have the same thing in common as the original coloured blocks - they both used what was/is the cutting edge technology.
(Same could be said for BBC2, but the nineties ones were a bit better...)
A few years back, I'd agree that the blocks should return. However, the construction 4s' are genius, especially the ones that have actually been made (the one at the music festival, the dockyard, the roller coaster, the motel, the buildings in Dubai), as opposed to the CGI ones like the council estate.
Channel 4 has the best shows. Shameless, The Simpsons, The Friday Night Project, Balls of Steel, Father Ted, The Big Bang Theory, The IT Crowd, My Name is Earl, and many more.
30th Birthday this November!

@twocvbloke I think fourscore is the best, but the replacement was cool in its own way.

That's wrong. They changed all the tunes on the idents to that one tune in late 1992/early 93

They abandoned the blocks as the Fourscore was costing them thousands in fees to David Dunas for the fourscore theme.
However, they have kept the same logo for years, mind you, unlike ITV and BBC who have chnaged theirs!

Not true. They changed the tune in early 1993 to the one at 0:30
