@spicychickenwing31 check out a recent rice krispies commercial, just search 'rice krispies cocoa' its the one with snap and crackle on the screen grab
It's not really from the 50's, more like late 60's. I remember it as a kid, and loved it. I still do. Great jazzy tune and the lyrics are really funny. And Vanhallen5150 is right: if you weren't careful you might get some cereal in your sugar. I can't believe how much sugar I ate back then.... remember Quisp and Quake? Frosted Flakes still tops the list, and when the cereal didn't have a crapload of added sugar, we'd dump a cup or two on it! Oh, and we used half and half, not 2%....
@andyweisberg7 Pretty sure you're right on the date, there. By the time I first heard this commercial I already knew the words "polyphony" and "counterpoint" and wasn't sure which it was. Those words came from my music theory class in eighth grade (1967) but I think the ad came out around 1968; quite astonishing of it not to be in color. Maybe whoever recorded it, did it with black and white film.
" I say its Crackel the crispy sound gotta have crackel or the clocks not wound, East cackel, Feathers Tickle, Belts buckle, Feet Pickle (?) but Crackel makes the World go round"
Now, there is Rice Krispies Treats cereal, which is basically the same thing. It's just a marketing trick. Little kids see a "new" Rice Krispies cereal, and they just have to have it.
Has anyone ever realized that Cocoa Krispies and Cocoa Pebbles are pretty much the same?
No Snap, Crackle, Pop TV ads predate 1960. Snap, Crackle and Pop's costumes were modified from the original to be less "ethnic" looking. With no explanation I am aware of, Crackle was originally dressed like a Portugese fisherman. Pop's tunic and Shako cap resembled the garb of a 19th Century German student paramilitary corps. Snap dressed as a baker--no mystery there. They first appeared as a threesome in 1939. They were created by Vernon Grant, an illustrator of children's books.
When the cereal company caught the 'but crackle..." at the end of the commercial, it was realized that Snap, Pop and Crackle were homosexual. They lost their contract for awhile.
Pop: "I insist that Pop's the sound/ The best is missed unless Pop's around/ You can't stop hoppin' when the cereal's poppin'/ Pop makes the world go round/ Snap, crackle, pop – Rice Krispies!"
"Snap, what a happy sound/ Snap is the happiest sound I found/ You may clap, rap, tap, slap, but Snap makes the world go round/ Snap, crackle, pop – Rice Krispies!"
Crackle: "I say it's Crackle, the crispy sound/ You gotta have Crackle or the clock's not wound/ Geese cackle, feathers tickle, belts buckle, beets pickle, but Crackle makes the world go round/ Snap, crackle, pop – Rice Krispies!"
The old commercials are artwork, each frame was hand drawn and took a lot of time; as compared to this 21st century that does a lot of computer generated looks, that make it perfect, repeatable, and testable that makes reshoots faster.
The part of PBS Kids this rice krispies commercial is found is PBS Kids Bookworm Bunch because PBS Kids Bookworm Bunch is the only part of PBS Kids that plays TV shows from the 1950, 1960,& 1970.
@Pixelbuddy yes hes saying but crackle but youre just hearing it wrong hes saying, but crackle makes the wrodl go round, not "butt" crackle makes the world go round!
It's nice that at least part of this wonderful jingle lives on in present day Rice Krispies commercials. This was made in the day when we were still amazed at the art that we could present with animation and the advent of monophonic wavelength transmission to television. Amazing !
@dantescratch It's funny; most B&W 50's commercials creep me out. However, I rather enjoyed that 1! They should re-run that commercial today. I bet their sales would soar. Heck; I wanna eat some "Rice Krispies" right now (LOL)!
@SamNLizzyBoyNGirl -- My dad wrote this when I was in high school in the 60s and we sang in a variety of classes but sub-rosa... somebody would start, "Snap, what a happy sound..." and pretty soon the whole English class (or whatever) was doing the song in 3 part harmony. It droves the teachers nuts and was great fun.
@AkwardEmoBunni HAA HAA i agree its like they poured a whole jug over is.. there called rice bubbles here in australia and funny enough some do have that much sugar on em
rice krispies are risky. you have to get the exact right amount of milk. if you put too much they get soggy really fast and if you don't put enough they taste dry
ill think ill Pop my shoulder back in place so i can go snap someones neck with the following act of cracking my skull, Just for that snap, crackle, pop that makes the world go round.
I worked for a NYC ad agency and know this ad. It is 1961 or 1962 from my best recollection. Most had not gone to full color until 1964, but the art work is classic. They used to get about $6,000-$8,000 for a 60 second spot...you cannot get a 1 second spot for that nowadays! Thanks for the post!
@animaniacsrule He was involved with a UK TV ad the Stones did for Rice Krispies before they came here to the States. All of them appear in the ad. You can find it elsewhere on YouTube.
The voice of Snap is Elmer "Len" Dresslar Jr., better known as the voice of the Jolly Green Giant (the Ho Ho Ho's, anyway). Not sure who did the other two voices.
Don Shelton was the voice of "Crackle". He was a member of the Hi-Lo's from the late 50's to early 60's. Don was a Chicago-based singer and multi-reed instrumentalist, now living in Southern California. He sang on hundreds (maybe thousands) of famous jingles in the 60's,70's 80's. He is a friend of mine, and the last time I worked with him in the studio he told me who Pop (Len Dressler) and Snap were, but I've forgotten who Snap was.
@Kujalamuse Thanks for the info! Neat that you worked with him. Bet he has lots of great stories from those days. I'm familiar with the Hi-Los, but never knew any of their names. Thanks again!
@Pixelbuddy What's funny is that he actually is, or almost is. He sings a bunch of words and then finishes with "but crackle makes the world go round".
I used to think that commercials were nice, though brief, escapes from drama (if that's what the ad interrupted). But these days, most commercials are irritating and strung along 4-5 together at once, causing me to givemy TV some drama..
Ah, you young whipper-snappers. I grew up with this commercial in the early '60s. In those days this level of animation was brand new. The jingle shows how pervasive to the American culture small-group jazz combos had become. This is really an artful work, but they went downhill from here (ex. the classic "Let Hertz put You in the Driver's Seat" ad with a guy dropping down from the sky into the car. That was overplayed and has scarred me forever!
I have a related video on YouTube you might be interested in about how television sets were sold from the 1950s-1970s entitled, "TV MAN: THE SEARCH FOR THE LAST INDEPENDENT DEALER."
@cfortunato58 Not sure on the writer's name, but the spot was created by the Leo Burnett agency. They gave us many of our best known TV ads throughout the past 60 years, including this one and the Jolly Green Giant, Charlie the Tuna (Star-Kist), and many others far too numerous to mention.
Hahaha, I remember singing this at Girl Scout camp...didn't know it was from an ad. Awesome. Poor Hubby, I'm going to drive him nuts tomorrow because it is now stuck in my head. >:)
Healings been a slow process for me,many doctors over the past 5 years, but getting better. Now I have a chiropractor working with me to get healthier. In the process, I now sanp, crackle,& pop. As a child I remember seeing & hearing this commercial. It's my new healing mantra.
@leesathepunkin this ad was made back in the good ol' days when cereal manufacturers actually boasted about the amount of sugar in their products!!!.....
