Oh, Victor20376, the Rhinegold beer advert is one of those things from my youth that I would gladly forget (but cannot). That is the way I learned this tune.
@gguerrasio I agree with you, but it may just a because Strauss wrote so many walzes. I've also read that while very famous during his lifetime, his type of music fell out of favor after his death during WWI.
My father taught me this on piano (a very simplified version) when I was around five. This song will always be dear to my heart and I'll never forget the evenings I spent playing this with him. I've only just now found htis song again.
@presbyterosBassI If you want to taste beer... then drink real beer, please.
Falsely called "belgian beer" is mostly Flemisch beer (North of Belgium, where the people speak Dutch: Vlaams !)
Try : Palm, Duvel, Hoegaerden, Trappist Westmalle, and...the world-wide best beer Trappist van Westvleteren... it's the taste from angels who are peeing in your mouth.
A lovely friend of mine played this song on piano for my birthday, dedicating it to me because he said that the melody represented our beautiful relationship... he warmed my soul just hearing him play…

I HEARD THIS GORGEOUS PIECE FIRST AT AGE 7 RIDING ON A BEAUTIFUL CAROUSEL IN ASBURY PARK NJ,I AM NOW 64 AND IT IS STILL MY VERY FAVORITE MUSICAL SELECTION!
Thanks for uploading this gem ! Of Waldteufel I only knew of the Skaters Waltz but this has been an absolutely splendid surprise and so also is the Espana.
Estudiantina is the Spanish word for a group of mardi-gras mummers who, dressed as medieval students, go about playing traditional student songs, often in the jota rhythm.
At times this waltz almost sounds like a Jota. Very charming.
In the 1950's, this waltz was used for a television commercial for Rheingold beer.
It went "my beer is Rheingold the dry beer, think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer. Not bitter or sweet, but an extra dry treat, won't you try extra dry Rheingold beer"
Magnificent!!! I recall that in England the BBC had a programme {radio} called Your Hundred Best Tunes which hardly ever featured this magnificent work. You would`nt believe some of the junk that was played on a regular basis.
I first came across this wonderful waltz at the age of six when it was played on a programme called "Marching and Waltzing" in 1967/68. The "light programme" had just become Radio Two following the setting up of Radio One in1967. The Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross episode involving Andrew Sachs is merely symptomatic of the great height from which both stations have fallen. Radio One now no longer plays either the Beatles or Status Quo.

Curioso notare come autori francesi hanno saputo dipingere così bene la Spagna: Chabrier, Waldteufel, Bizet........

By the way, Estudiantina is not from Waldteufel, it is from Paul Lacôme, a french composer. Waldteufel just made an arrangement as a Waltz.
