@SleepoverBeethoven listen to the unedited last waltz and say that. he wasn't "shit" but he is fairly mediocre. In the film "the Last Waltz" Robbie overdubbbed every single guitar solo other than one part of "makes no difference", and the studio version is still choppy and unprofessional sounding, especially for the style he was going for. this is the day of Clapton, BB, and all the blues greats, but in my opinion Robbie really has a pinched sound compared to other guitar players of that time.
@jazzmasterjesus lmfao robbie along with slowhand, Garcia, hendrix are the original guitar players that made guitar what it is today if you where born back then you wouldn't know or play shit... this is one of the worst ideas on the internet. also you wouldn't have the talent on the guitar like you do now.
Great vocal work by Rick. i saw him solo in the 1990s and he'd blown up like a balloon. the shock in the audience was palpable. why would someone with so much to live for self-destruct like that. just a terrible shame.
its amazing you guys, nothing bad said, i love the band and agree with all, this is the first time in you tube history, and it is hard to pick a favorite, but thats what made them great!!!!!!
Don’t Know Where That Is I want to go home But I don’t know where that is I wish I could get lost but I don’t know where that is Wish I could find a daughter or a son But I don’t know where that is Wanna To be left alone but I don’t know where that is M.S. Morrison
I have to speak up. It's pretty clear if you read my posts, few as there may be, that I love The Band. But the bashing of RR has to stop. It is well know that he couldn't sing shit. His sin was that he wanted to sing. But he wasn't given that skill. What he could do was play the guitar and WRITE. The Band is the most amazing group of talent. Combined they played dozens of instrumnets, they had multiple singers, everyone wanted to play with them. They are THE BAND. Get off the RR rant and enjoy.
@thisismyidgdi I totally agree. Robbie Robertson wrote some of the most intelligent and best songs in the history of rock and roll. King Harvest is absolutely brilliant and probably the epitome of their skill. But on the other hand, less famous tracks like Forbidden Fruit and Sleeping are also very good songs; when you listen to Robertson's lyrics in the first case you think "huh, pretty cool lyrics", but when you analyse them, there's a whole different, new, mystical layer to it all.
rick danko stayed a night at a crash house i was living in at the time when the band was in town he regaled us with music of course i sang along loudly;
RR wrote this song about himself. I think he knew he couldn't sing. Danko sings it beautifully. I am not defending RR, just saying he wasn't a complete a-hole. He could write.

Robbie feels as bad about all this as anybody. The real culprit is Albert Grossman who manipulated things to get control of the publishing which is where all the money is in this ratty business.
@naughtmoses Oh really? Robbie is a good guitar player and songwriter, thats IT! Least talented member of the band, yet he thought he was a diva, singing his "backup vocals" when he knew his mic was off. He should have accepted his fate as playing fifth fiddle.
@theatlantisrise I agree with you about the Robbie who =was=. The Robbie who =is= is a different deal altogether. (Did you know what you awere doing when you were 32?)
@naughtmoses --- mmm I don't know about that - ever read the BS, self-serving eulogy he read at Danko's funeral? He may pay lip service to feeling bad now - but even after Grossman was out of the picture he never made right or even tried....Like Levon said - Rick and Richard died with their money in Robertson's pocket....
I always loved The Band, and remember the first time I saw this concert some 30 odd years ago. It wasn't until in the last 10 years or so I even knew why they broke up, and I had no clue about the crap Robertson was doing with this concert or the writing credits.
Then I read Levon's book, and I wish I hadn't. It's hard for me to look at Robertson now without feeling anything but contempt for him as a fraud and an egomaniac.. takes some of the enjoyment of watching this great band away.
@buckfan1969 yeah same, i read neil youngs biography shakey, and it totally ruined crosby stills and nash for me, and neils republican phase really made me detest young. cracking book i reccommend it so so so much
@kingappleblossom Amen You are so right and not just them , them as a Band, THE BAND even w DYLAN Some of the most beautiful music and voices you will ever hear
Everyone talks about Robbie, but I just watched this film earlier tonight, and I think Rick is the real star. Just sings with so much feeling, and his bass playing (along with Levon's drumming) really drives the band. They're all great, though, truly a unit. Garth is just an amazing musician, and I like Robbie's playing because he doesn't overplay, he plays what suits the song.
@ronfowlermusic Rick Danko not only has the best stage presence (sorry, Levon), but also the best rock star name. Mr. Danko, I hope you're jamming with the legends in the afterlife.
@bongrocker yeah, Levon has a totally unique drum style/sound. Great singer, too. It's just mind boggling the talent that was in The Band. I love the parts of the film where Levon is talking about music, he's just a natural in front of the camera, no show biz airs from Levon.
