God, this man's singing is even more contrived than "Saint" Gabriel's. This airless, groove-less, insipid song was probably the best tune on the album, alarmingly. I'm off to listen to Abacab, an album that still maintains its vitality all these years on.
I really like some of this album, though too many songs have a similar tempo and most fade out very quickly as if they though "that'll do". I would've liked a slight return to the varied interludes and sounds of the old Gabriel era Genesis. I thought Ray had a great voice for the band, quite close to my favourite, Peter Gabriel. I certainly wish they'd stuck it out and tried a second CD once Ray had settled in.
Some may not know it : This was filmed at the Rock am Ring, the last Gig during the Calling all Stations Tour... After that in 2000, Genesis played again in 2000 for their Manager Tony Smith and Ray Wilson got history for Genesis...
One of my favourites...cannot understand that people who don`t like this album...its just as great as the best older album......what a pity they not made a second one with Ray
@ChocolateHoneycomb Actually, I think that the main problem was that the audience changed during the 90's. The concept of "good music" changed. We started having Britney Spears by the late 90's and from this time onwards pop music got worse and worse. The good musicians were overshadowed by new fabricated mediocre artists and lost space in the music scene. Apart from that, Calling All Stations isn't THAT good. It's a reasonable album that lacked identity. Ray's voice didn't match Genesis also.
F*ck the haters! I love this period in their career! In my mind there's no bad Genesis album, and this is no exception! Ray Wilson's a great singer and songwriter, and they went for a heavier sound that combined their early prog-rock period, their poppier period in the 80s & now they're adding Ray's alt-rock background to the mix in a way that just works so well. Phil's gone, and he's not coming back. So deal with it!
@maalbe987 Well most Gene-fans didn't like it, and Tony and Mike kicked Ray out of the band and deemed the band dead after the poor sales and poor tour feedback, so it can't have worked... We Can't Dance is the real end of Genesis in my eyes, Fading Lights closes the band's discography perfectly.
@SoundsofRuneScape I see where you're coming from. They did kinda do a 180 in the span of those 2 albums. I just think it's unfair how overlooked this album is. The pop fans were confused, and the fans of the alternative rock sound that the album presented were thrown off by the Genesis album the album came with. It's a lose-lose situation.
What a great statement of Banks/Rutherford's talent! The previous album, 'We Can't Dance' (or write music so it seemed) was a heap of caca. Then this came along and it was some of the freshest material they had put out in years. Great album!
While Ray is a different to Phil .. they shouldn't EVER be compared. I discovered this song only just recently when I bought the Genesis Platinum Collection 3CD set and just love it.
So as much as I will ALWAYS LOVE phil's voice i am VERY impressed with Ray's :-) and believe he works well with Tony and Mike.
I think we should stop comparing Ray with Phil. Ray only did an album with Genesis and a one year tour with probably 40 gigs, and how can we judge a singer when he stayed such a short period with a band? Maybe if he did another album or the tour were longer, then we could say something. But If you say that Ray can't sing,I may have to disagree with you, If he couldent sing then how did he joined them?
I don't understand the harsh critic, I love this album, great songs. new ideas that echo great moments of the past. I'm sad the neverwas have bagged it cause it's not what was and is gone. Get over it! Now we may never hear the likes again. DividingLine wonderful, shipwrecked full o passion, NotAboutUs, MustBe SomeOtherWay, wow! great emotionalpassionate tracks, Fool, Calling, there are NO dud tracks. Wilson has a great sound on the studio album. Get over yourselves. We are all the loosers.
I think someones right about when Peter left- I thought my world had ended..then along came some fantastic albums- until the silly lyrics about 'my wifes run off' appeared- but the music was still there in parts- CAS was an album witout a duff track-IMHO.
I'm a fan of CAS,but this version just feels lifeless and flat. Also Mike and Tonys body language says a lot too,I think they already knew the band's time was up,I think in hindsight I'd have preferred if We can't dance had been their last album..the final track fading lights was as good as anything they had ever recorded.
@splicer45 Fading Lights is one of the BEST things they've recorded. I think Tony said he wrote that while realizing an era was coming to an end. The lyrics certainly reflect that.
Groundfxdude- Youve got it! Mike and Tony always stated and it was obvious from their stage-shows that they didnt want to sing, talk or prank about - and with PC not there , spat his dummy out, or whatever- that Album was a fresh change and gave the Musicians a chance to be creative without ties-once more.
@patrickjmorgan Phil left and he no more spat his dummy out than Peter or Steve. This album/tour was a mistake and in hindsight all involved seem to regret ever doing it. Thank god it wasn't the last we heard from them - this would have been a dud note to end on.
i used to have that album and i lost it, I never seen it before but this is one of the best albums I have heard in rock history. i doesnt know why people never listen with all senses... for this special song it never explode in extasis but doesnt matter cause is very cool and feeling for me.. good job ray wilson and genesis
I agree with this..... Genesis 1st edition with P.Gabriel, second Edition with Phil Collins... why not à third edition with R. Wilson ?.... Calling all sation is a good song, and the album is a good one....
Remeber when Peter splits..... what did we said ?...
It's been a long time since this album came out and I can now reflect upon it with a different view. When CAS came out I really like most of the tracks but as the album went on... I would get a little bored. Basically Tony and Mike didn't give Ray a chance as well as the fans. After saying this I find my self listening to this album more than ever before.
The album is kinda uneven, with interesting pieces like this, Alien Afternoon, There Must Be Some Other Way and The Dividing Line, but with some less interesting pop like Shipwrecked, If Thats What You Need and Small Talk. Overall, i like the album though.
This LP was so deeply under-rated, and was so truly well done, that it is a shame this project didn't do better. It gave Banks and Rutherford a chance to actually play some interesting music again - for a change. It gave us - the audience an opportunity to see a Genesis front man - whose name was not Peter - with some actual charisma. Oh, and the fact that Ray could ACTUALLY SING in a non-nasal Collins tone, was really refreshing and exciting to this Yank. Great Album. Almost a Great Genesis era
@groundfxdude YOU SAID IT ALL!! SHAME RAY WAS'NT AT THE r&ROLL HALL O' (BL)AME (THX TO STEVE HACKETT!!,HEY RAY AND STEVE SHOULD WORK TOGETHER, THAT WULD BE COOL!!!!!!
@groundfxdude Lovely to read some positive comments on this album AT LAST!
Grew up with Genesis and was never really a fan, BUT i fell in love with Ray Wilson's wonderful voice. Every song on CAS is superb and i am so disappointed to find many missing on Youtube. Where is 'If That's What You Need' ????!! Will never understand why CAS was a so-called 'flop'.......
@deadhardy it was no easy for ray to take the place from such a Icon as Phill collins.
ok, it was not the album you expected to hear, but now you can see the difference between the choise of music from phil and the ideas of mike and tony. not a bad album at all, loved most of the songs
@groundfxdude I don't agree much with this point of view. Ray's singing style is not convincing to me. He sings well but it's a style that does not match Genesis at all. Phil's singing could be a bit annoying sometimes but the energy and emotion he put out was very convincing. Also, his voice is very distinct, while Ray's is very generic and "too cool".
a great song from a great, but great album...a one very far from the pop oriented Genesis of the 80's!!..it is a pity that after a respectable success in the Europe tour during that time, the tour in the US was a wreck...this was the reason why this proyect was aborted and Rutherford and Banks let go Wilson.
What a big petty that Genesis is losing good voice of Ray Wilson, it gave Genesis another dimension. I loved all the songs by Ray Wilson, a true good sustitue for Peter Gabriel.
It's such a same they only released the one album with ray as lead singer. Calling all stations was a good album and took the band in a different direction. i saw the Calling all stations tour, i felt ray performed the songs from phil collins era well, but was better suited to the peter gabriel era, as it was more in keeping with his vocal range.
I would have loved to attend to a Genesis concert with Ray as the vocalist... it was a shame they did not follow through with him as the vocalist, I thought it was awesome.
Calling all stations is great, at least I saw Stiltskin live and was able to enjoy Ray's, Stiltskin's and Genesis' best music.
Ray Wilson, he's better than Phil Collons, and genesis has return to good music with him cause Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford were free to write songs they alwayls like. Phil Collins is not a great writer, he must have stay on drums and no more, he ji so good on drumming, but he's so poor in singing and writing songs...
It's a shame that Ray wilson was fired of Genesis...
I hope someday he will return ! And i Hope that Peter Gabriel too...so Phil Collins could retrun to play drums... ;)
Very pedestrian boring drumming. It's not Phil is it? Ray Wilson's vocals are monotonous and uninspiring. Hardly any dynamic range.
This song's enough to cure insomnia. I know it's a pretty harsh statement, but I'm so glad I've replaced most of my Genesis vinyl LPs on CD now.
IMHO Genesis produced their best material in the 70s. Personally I would love to see another Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Banks & Hackett collaboration.
i think its a shame they were not given a proper chance by the fans i thought that they were brave for carrying on after phil left.
why should'nt they. i liked this album and they were great live. bands have to changed there sounds, music, albums to stay alive and they did i thought it still sound like genesis. why cant people live without phil he is not the be all and end all of this band,
i think its a shame they were not given a proper chance by the fans i thought that they were brave for carrying on after phil left.
why should'nt they. i liked this album and they were great live. bands have to changed there sounds, music, albums to stay alive and they did i thought it still sound like genesis. why cant people live without phil he is not the be all and end all of this band,
you are right we lost the chance of hearing them carrying on ; and beleive it or not it was the stupid response of many supposed genesis fans that were supposed to have good taste and see a lot of beauty in calling all station.
in calling all station phil is not missing with his vocals, hi is missing in his drums of course; but anyway the no son of mine album(the least beautiful genesis album)phil's drums were missing ,they were just old repetition. So phil left after the invisible touch album i mean before no son of mine...
yes you are right this is the first time ever that i make a mistake when it comes to genesis. i think i consider we can't dance the only genesis album that is not up to their artistic level. listen to the drums for example, there is no new phil creativity as usual but only old bits repetition. and tony where is he and his keyboards colours?and mike he was my bass player hero... but still i love we can't dance it is still genesis and there is nothing as beautiful as genesis.
well i believe they lost their true artistic genius at the abacab stage but i do like all their albums, especially a trick of the tail and yes i agree with you on we cant dance. Invisible touch and the 'mama' album were far better. Whats ur favourite album?
it is really hard to tell as all their 1970 to 1980 are a real solid work of art . You can see and smell (not only hear)the amount of energy spent there. i dont know, this year i have a preferance tendancy for selling england by the pound.20 years ago it was wind and wuthering, 30 years ago it was and then there were three and the lamb; and i really cannot disagree with you:i can be easily convinced(with pleasure) that trick of the tail is their best.( the keyboard solo in robbery oh my god...
Awesome! I love this song, great performance too. CAS is the most underated album in the entire Genesis catalogue. It's a pity some people - like Squonky below - are too f*cking pompous to give it a chance. Idiots...
the album is not misunderstood. What people dont like is the fact that its called Genesis. When you hear the Name genesis, your looking for a specific sound. When ppl saw Genesis and listened to this they said, what the hell is this, this is not genesis, and they are correct.
This album with a different band name it would be ok, yes there are some good songs, but this is not genesis
I didn't say misunderstood, I said underated. Your argument about the Genesis "sound" is pretty shaky - their sound was *always* changing. If you actually listen to CAS for its musical content - the melodic and formal structures, harmonic progressions, etc - it's pure Banks/Rutherford through and through, and they were always the heart and soul of Genesis musically. At the end of the day, complaining that they should/should not have used the Genesis name is a pretty weak criticism of an album.
sry u did say underated i misread. The fact is, if they wanted to keep the name genesis with ray singing they should have did what Queen did
Queen+Paul Rogers..Should have been Genesis+Ray wilson.. Actually what i said is pretty accurate, from gabriel era to phil era they have kept most of the same sound, changed a few here and there but always had the same type of sound. Listen to Can-Utility and the coastliners off foxtrot. Then listen to Seconds out...Alot of the same sounds...
different from any of this classic and loved sound. When Genesis moved away from this sound it was when Phil decided to go a different route and pretty much make it pop (kinda)
Yes that is Banks/Rutherford up there but it lacks everything. Its still not even close to the same sound. I take that back, there is like 1 song, Uncertin weather i think it is, you can can hear Genesis in it, but thats the only one.
Before Calling All Stations Genesis didn't have a "specific" sound. Listen to Watcher of the Skies then Abacab and tell me they sound the same.
And, I don't know all the details, but the reason Queen has that name is because they weren't planning on carrying on with Paul Rogers, just the one show. But they decided to carry on afterwards. I think it's simply Paul wasn't going to be a full member.
Ray is. He was the new singer of Genesis. Deal with it. And they released an album. It is Genesis, becuase the band called Genesis made it. They're a band, and they can write whatever music they want. As kylehudson00 said, it's a very weak criticism.
Seriously, if you despise Ray Wilson so much, stop watching the Calling All Stations videos. Some like Peter, some Phil, some Ray. I appriciate all 3 lead singers for their contributions to the band whether they were popular for it or not. So if you don't like it, simply don't watch it.
Ray didnt contribute to the band, sorry to tell you. He was the worst singer and should have never been brought in. The only reason ray was even in the band was because mike and tony tried to keep it together. This was bound to fail and should have stopped at phil leaving
He did indeed contribute to the band. He wrote three of the songs on the album including Not About Us which he still performs today on his solo tours. As for the rest of what you said, to each his own.
God, this man's singing is even more contrived than "Saint" Gabriel's. This airless, groove-less, insipid song was probably the best tune on the album, alarmingly. I'm off to listen to Abacab, an album that still maintains its vitality all these years on.

And i Hope that Peter Gabriel too...so Phil Collins could retrun to play drums... ;)

Man, you are SO right. Phil was best on drums and Ray Wilson could have been the great new hope for Genisis. What are they no but a vintage band

Wilson was punished cause was-is/n't of Genesis's Gang!!
He is perfect in Calling All Stations's Album!
Thus, Wilson is another way/(to me, the better) to sing the Genesis' song

i think its a shame they were not given a proper chance by the fans i thought that they were brave for carrying on after phil left.
why should'nt they. i liked this album and they were great live. bands have to changed there sounds, music, albums to stay alive and they did i thought it still sound like genesis. why cant people live without phil he is not the be all and end all of this band,
the other two are great song writers as well.
give them a break!

you are right we lost the chance of hearing them carrying on ; and beleive it or not it was the stupid response of many supposed genesis fans that were supposed to have good taste and see a lot of beauty in calling all station.
amirhamra 3 years ago
in calling all station phil is not missing with his vocals, hi is missing in his drums of course; but anyway the no son of mine album(the least beautiful genesis album)phil's drums were missing ,they were just old repetition. So phil left after the invisible touch album i mean before no son of mine...
amirhamra 3 years ago
u mean the 'we cant dance' album wen u say the no son of mine album
nintendo64isking 3 years ago
yes you are right this is the first time ever that i make a mistake when it comes to genesis. i think i consider we can't dance the only genesis album that is not up to their artistic level. listen to the drums for example, there is no new phil creativity as usual but only old bits repetition. and tony where is he and his keyboards colours?and mike he was my bass player hero... but still i love we can't dance it is still genesis and there is nothing as beautiful as genesis.
amirhamra 3 years ago
well i believe they lost their true artistic genius at the abacab stage but i do like all their albums, especially a trick of the tail and yes i agree with you on we cant dance. Invisible touch and the 'mama' album were far better. Whats ur favourite album?
nintendo64isking 3 years ago
it is really hard to tell as all their 1970 to 1980 are a real solid work of art .

Idiots...
kylehudson00 4 years ago 4
the album is not misunderstood. What people dont like is the fact that its called Genesis. When you hear the Name genesis, your looking for a specific sound. When ppl saw Genesis and listened to this they said, what the hell is this, this is not genesis, and they are correct.
This album with a different band name it would be ok, yes there are some good songs, but this is not genesis
blindpirate82 3 years ago
I didn't say misunderstood, I said underated. Your argument about the Genesis "sound" is pretty shaky - their sound was *always* changing. If you actually listen to CAS for its musical content - the melodic and formal structures, harmonic progressions, etc - it's pure Banks/Rutherford through and through, and they were always the heart and soul of Genesis musically. At the end of the day, complaining that they should/should not have used the Genesis name is a pretty weak criticism of an album.
kylehudson00 3 years ago
sry u did say underated i misread.
CAS is wayyyyy
blindpirate82 3 years ago
different from any of this classic and loved sound. When Genesis moved away from this sound it was when Phil decided to go a different route and pretty much make it pop (kinda)
Yes that is Banks/Rutherford up there but it lacks everything. Its still not even close to the same sound. I take that back, there is like 1 song, Uncertin weather i think it is, you can can hear Genesis in it, but thats the only one.
blindpirate82 3 years ago
Ok first off:

As kylehudson00 said, it's a very weak criticism.
renoo27 2 years ago
Seriously, if you despise Ray Wilson so much, stop watching the Calling All Stations videos. Some like Peter, some Phil, some Ray. I appriciate all 3 lead singers for their contributions to the band whether they were popular for it or not. So if you don't like it, simply don't watch it.
awesomedude1133 4 years ago 6
Ray didnt contribute to the band, sorry to tell you. He was the worst singer and should have never been brought in. The only reason ray was even in the band was because mike and tony tried to keep it together. This was bound to fail and should have stopped at phil leaving
blindpirate82 3 years ago
He did indeed contribute to the band. He wrote three of the songs on the album including Not About Us which he still performs today on his solo tours. As for the rest of what you said, to each his own.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Pathetic.
