Because it tried to follow Doom1/2, you were completely alone there.

To be succesfull Doom 3 needed some people to actually survive other than the protagonist. It didn't.

I still kind of liked it but could have been infinitely better

That's called a Wraith. It's bottom jaw splits open, like the Vamps in Blade 2, and it has smaller mouths on the ends of the jaws like Aliens. They tend to run on all fours, and you hear a skittering sound when they approach. They're also very cuddly.

I found in doom3 that it's very easy to toss aside the shotgun (not the first few levels though) so i think doom3 makers put a special place for the shotgun, the hell. there you take on a hellknight with only your shotgun. (you could also use the pistol..) Honestly i felt bad finding in alpha labs that i had piles of shells in the shotgun not being used at all.
