Nope, its just for looks, if you're trying to avoid tons of pain, I recommend cardboard shields, motorcycle armor, or perhaps just a sweatshirt or two...

@DASKATERKID Chainmail was originally designed to stop slashing weapons. If you bat each out with sticks it will feel the same as if you weren't wearing chainmail. Plate armour was designed for crushing weapons.
