As much as I love trolling fanboys I have to say this, the mac is slightly over priced (you are paying for a screen worth 1000$), and you can't upgrade anything. I am getting one myself and it actully stod between a custom built and this. But personally I am into photshop and I needed a good screen, so I went for iMac. But some might go for a gamming rig
The technology and hardware will last a mac user three years until he/she wants to buy a new one. Since Apple Computers hold their value better than PCs, you can sell your 3 year old Mac for much more than you could with a 3 year old PC and just get the latest and greatest Mac!!!! Plus, we can run windows 7 and play all of your games.
You're looking at the situation from the perspective of short-term ownership.
Which games? Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty: WaW, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 and a bit of Crysis, but not much.
Let me guess, you're a long-time PC user who has never owned a Mac?
I can honestly say that you have defeated me, in a way, with that statement. Though, with a Mac, there comes one great shortcoming to gamers; hardware customization. A Mac is high-end, I will give you that, but very expensive. And, in the future, when software demands higher-end hardware, you'll have to buy a completely new one.
And, no, I do own a Mac, a 27" with a Core i7 and 4850, and I do say it's a good machine, but compared to the price/performance with gaming, a PC defeats it completely.
By the way, I ran out of space on the other comment, and I needed to mention, gaming is my primary use for my computer(s). And, when it comes to gaming, a PC can crush a Mac with the same amount of money spent on one.
Though, admittedly, a Mac is a much better multimedia computer, but my main concern is the price. Mine was well within the 2,000 dollar range, and I'm not that pleased with it, price wise- and, yes, I am planning on selling it, or giving it to a friend.
If you mentioned the fact that your primary computing need was gaming, then I might have understood your argument a bit better. I agree with you on the points you have made relating to price and gaming; a PC can beat a Mac in that department, mostly because Apple aren't wanting to beat it.
Think of it this way; your Mac holds value significantly better than your PC; I'm sure you could make a nice bit of money in a few years when it is time for a replacement.
It holds it's value because it's built to last and be replaced before it's value/performance declines, and probably longer than that. A PC is meant to be upgraded year or so, and thus cannot hold it's value, but it goes in sync with the newest technology coming out, which also arises, again, the positive of customization.
Though I will give you this: a Mac is meant to be good or great at everything a computer can do. A PC is specific at things depending on the one you want. And I'm out of space.
You'd be hardpressed to find a computer system with a WQXGA resolution monitor, Lynnfiield 860 processor, radeon 4600 series gpu and 4 gigs of ddr3 memory for under 2000.
I didn't even include computer fans, keyboard, mouse, power supply, speakers, motherboard and wifi card.
Apple does make price competitive computers believe it or not, the only difference is their updates are few and far between.
Maybe if you're looking at Dell or HP, but you could easily build one with the same specifications, hell, better, for less. And, yes, I would include fans, motherboard, wifi card, etc.
Only if you use a monitor with lower resolution. The screen on the new iMac is the real reason why it's price competitive. Current screens at that resolution are around 1000 usd. Add a 200 usd lynnfield 860, 200 usd worth of ram and so on, and any custom built PC with the same specs will be about same price as these new iMacs.
@muk546 Ummm I can build a quad core i7 with 8gb ram better grfx card bigger hardrive no laptop parts awesome case and more. Of course the monitor I wold get is a 100$ 21.5in monitor and regular mouse an keyboard but hey it is cheaper when was the last time you built a computer? like actually found all the parts yourself and didnt just get the most expensive parts to try to "prove" it was more expensive.
btw I am planning on buying one of these macs dont think I am a mac hater.
Okay, the display is worth 1000$. By your logic, the "computer" part of the iMac costs only 119$ for the baseline model. In my opinion, you're getting a computer free with the display. :)
The baseline model has a screen with only 1920x1080 resolution-- those resolution screens are cheap on the market. So no, the computer aspect of the baseline iMacs is not just $119.
BECAUSE YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO BUY SUCH A GREAT COMPUTER!!!! You wanna know why you can't afford it??
BECAUSE YOUR STUPID ASS DIDN'T GO TO COLLEGE OR IF YOUR YOUNGER, THEN YOUR PARENTS PROLLY DIDN'T GO TO COLLEGE AND JUST FELT LIKE THEY SHOULD MAKE THIS CHILD (WHICH IS YOU BTW) AND HAVE NO MONEY TO FEED HIM....

At, what, 20 FPS?
A GeForce GT250 can't run a game for shit.
DracoX9 2 years ago
No, actually. Macs can run popular games at very smooth frame rates, believe it or not!
Eggyrocks1 2 years ago
That doesn't change the fact they're expensive as hell for the models that can.
Also, tell me, which games exactly? Call of Duty 4? Spore? Gears of War? No shit, because they're formatted for it.
A PC can do anything a Mac can do, but better.

Dell or HP are vendors just like apple, so naturally they will overprice their stuff just as apple does.
You can arguably build a computer that matches the stats of the iMac for a little less, but not by much. I've yet to see you compile a list to do so.
TMRaven 2 years ago
its not arguable for 2k you can get a much better computer than any mac entailing the same price.

uhm 1920 x 1080 is a shit resolution. I can get a full hd monitor in 1920 x 1200 for less than 400.

and monitor's you buy in 2560x1440 res will make the mac look like garbage and yes it will be cheaper.
blankpianist 2 years ago
So far you've been all talk but have yet to give any evidence of your claims.
Show me a monitor that matches the 27" iMac resolution for cheap.

No they aren't. You're forgetting that it's an IPS display, along with a very nice 16:9 aspect ratio. Those displays are not cheap.
Eggyrocks1 2 years ago
IPS 1920x1080 displays are not $1000 and up. Monitors that cost $1000 and up are 2560x1600 resolution.
You can google it yourself. 1920x1080 monitors are around $400, while the much higher 2560x1600 resolution monitors are around $1000.
