He was my FDO, Platoon Commander, and XO while assigned to L 3/12 in Okinawa from 1993-1995. He's one of the finest officers and certainly one of the finest men I have ever known. He was a living example of what a man, and a Marine should be. He lived a hero, and died a hero. He will forever hold a place in my heart as a mentor, a friend, and a fellow Devil Dog. I just finished reading the book "Horse Soldiers," that chronicles the incident at Qala-i-Jangi. Mike Span was an incredibly brave man.
