Sounds to me like he just broke up with his girl... And in the beginning he obviously knows deep down that he still loves her...but they're broken up...and he has to deal...and move on with his life..."In my way, there's you". So he gets angry and tries to push her out of his thoughts with anger... That's why he starts yelling "I don't care!"
