  • Tolkien wrote LOTR for young teens, The Hobbit for 5-8's.

  • The only reason Pippen went to Minus Tirith was because he looked into a Palentir!!! WTF. Thats as bad as PJ!!!

  • @zaprese *Pippin *Minas Tirith *Palantir

  • This is so fucking bad. The character designs horrible. The voice acting is awful. The animation is even worse.

  • @Andreazor You sucks dude, this is 80's. And LOTR is not as the pictures, its about fantasy and child tales. Grow up.

  • @nightnoia LOTR is about child tales? That's funny. The animated movies are obviously targeted to kids, but Tolkien explicitly intended the story to be for adults when he wrote it.

  • @nightnoia no this was bad compared to what they made in 1978 ,which was 2 years before this ,but they changed ditector and team and made this which is very poor compared to the 1st 2 books which where animated and done really well compared to this ...search for laord of the rings cartoon and see the diffeence and it will make you think this is pants in comparrison

  • @Andreazor have you ever seen the ist half of these movies .it was a different director and he took it right up to the battle at helms deep ,but then the took the money ran out ,then a few years later they made this with a different team like a scooby doo cartoon..but the 1st half is actully really good,if your a fan youll like the start, but they totally eeffed the return of the king

  • Gandalf takes undeserved credit for making the Palantiri, too! Ugh!

  • this whole movie was a HUGE pronunciation failure. how dare they defile Tolkien's masterpiece thus?

  • @FanJamesMarsters i know those ppl defiling tolkiens good work

  • Omg this is hilarious xD

  • Seriously I think about Moblins when I see the Orcs :D

  • 2:36 come quickly

    *walks up stairs slowly*

  • Tolkein is rolling over in his fucking grave.

  • You'd think Pippin would know what a palantir is... Oh, wait. That didn't happen in this movie.

  • denethor sounds like a goat mixed with a bear

    man i love the 80's

  • 1:45-1:47, Gandalf looks bored. Even the music shows it.

  • Lol, look at nazgul...wtf....only normal thing in this was the oliphants.

  • Denethor didn't have a seeing-stone!

  • @falutak He did

  • @falutak

    Yes he did.

  • The narrator sounds like he got a mouth full of saliva.

  • "Most useful assistant to me" is Gandalf's way of saying "a barely useful idiot"

  • Oliphaunts look like mammoths and no haradrim on them.

  • @Leonniket yeah, this cartoon was made for kids. The Nazgul did NOT ride on winged horses, for crying out loud, and they got the Witch-King all wrong. Many of the things Denethor says here come from the book, but the delivery is poor. Also, all of the characters are dog-ugly.

Peter Jackson's version was more accurate, at least visually, audibly, and emotionally.

  • this is all wrong

  • Denethor is Mr. Magoo?

  • i love gandalf's voice actor and this old-school animation!

  • WHERES FARAMIR! :(

  • lol.this doesnt contain much of tolkiens dialogue...only some.Pippin definitely doesnt say"HES GONE LOONEY" lol

  • The Nazgul are kin of Skeletor!

    Someone, call 1-800-FriendlyNeighborhoodHeMan quickly!

  • LOL Stoned @ 1:45

  • This is a children's and family special; how dare that word be spoken on a show like this at 0:01-0:10.

  • @67nairb LOL! I am sorry, but you sound like a nut. Is not war hell? i would be outraged if the show glorified war, but because it makes it out as a bad thing, you are up in arms and outraged? No disrespect meant.

  • @ARP7777777 Well this is a family show and maybe Gandalf or John Huston could've said the words:"But now the sparkling gem of Gondor had been dulled and flawed with a 'horror' of war. In another scene from the movie, as he and Sam are walking through the barren wastes of Mordor to get to Mount Doom to accomplish their mission, Frodo says: "This 'hellish' Mordor. First is sears you then it freezes you." It's a pretty scary film for small children. And I wasn't up in arms or outraged by anything.

  • This movie had a lot of narration, still, it was pretty good. I found Denethor's laugh to be especially creepy and yet hilarious.

  • Read the book for God's sake!

  • "He's gone loony I tell you!"

  • epic crazy laugh

  • rofl at crazy laugh again 4:48

  • lmao at crazy laugh 3:09

  • Is that William Conrad's voice as Denethor?

  • @lesababy Yes.

  • A crystal ball. Lol. It would be nice if, just once, someone would read the book before turning it into a movie...

  • @LibertyJusticeTruth Well, really, what else would you call a palantir, especially if you were trying to quickly explain it to simple person like a hobbit.

  • Oh, and they say "Theoh-den"!

  • Jesus Croikey, they can't say a darn thing right in these: Mine-ass Tirith, Rowan, what next, will they call "Gondor" "Condor"?

  • Denethor was technically right.. there WAS a fleet of ships with Black Sails arriving, just it was Aragorn using a ploy and not the Corsairs.

  • well it's unfortunate that rankin-bass had to cut entire characters like legolas and gimli.

  • "king of the friendly nation of Rowan"

    It's Ro-HAN, you dipwad

  • is face is so epic at 1:45

he looks so stoned on the southern star pipe weed LMAO

  • @JavodeOz Lol. I just took a good look at him, too. Can you blame him? End-of-the-world crisis happening all around him? Might as well go out with ease, right? Lol. Just kidding. but yeah Gandalf did look pretty glum.

  • Denethor's ever the optimist.

  • Never mind, let us not go to Minas Tirith it is a silly place

  • @randommoviereviews4 *cues music*

We are knights of the White Tower!

    We sing whilst we glower!

We lose our heads when the Dark Lord treads,

Ere the Steward runs and cowers.

    Great times in Minas Arnor:

Our doom doth come from Pelennooooooooorrr!

    *music dies*

  • @junugustinigan On second thought, let's not go to Minas Tirith...it is a silly place. *Aragorn's ships turn around*

  • Denethor foresaw the downfall of the modern west in the palantir (America, Europe, etc) and the rise of an evil empire in the east (North Korea, Iran). No wonder he committed suicide

  • The REAL Lord of the Rings movies are so much better than this version.

  • Comment removed

  • This is retarded

  • I love how pippins like I'll get gandalf

In a sort of ,"I'm telling" sort of way

  • Sorry for nitpicking, but isn't Denethor in the book described as being tall, noble and like his sons Denethor and Faramir in looks? (Being a Numenorean - albeit a less "pure" Numenorean than Aragorn - we can safely say he would look MORE like John Noble than this...) So how exactly did we get a crooked, bad, crazy-looking kook who actually sounds even more insane than Noble's portrayal of the character?

  • @jamesgravil In the defense of this film, they do actually show WHY Denethor lost his mind. In the PJ movie it just seems that he is mad for no reason.

  • @Hektor88 Can't disagree with you there. I would say that Denethor's MOTIVATIONS are far less clear in this film than in PJ's version - in that film it's just his distrust of Gandalf, his contempt for Aragorn, his dislike of Faramir and a general despair of the growing power of Mordor - but that his PORTRAYAL in the film series is closer to the book.

  • @jamesgravil Hih? In this version his "motivation" was exactly as it was in the book. He used the Palantir to spy on Sauron's strength. Sauron fed him false visions which aged him with worry and drove him mad with fear.

  • @fjccommish True, that's what the PJ version was lacking, but this film doesn't feature Faramir, and it plays less (if at all) on Denethor's distrust of Gandalf - and although it was Denethor's despair at seeing the waxing power of Sauron through the palantir that eventually drove him to madness, it was the apparently mortal wound of Faramir that finally drove him over the edge.

A perfect film interpretation of Denethor would have featured BOTH Faramir and the palantir.

  • @jamesgravil Agreed.

  • @jamesgravil And, the idea that the last true heir to the throne was going to come and try to take it all away from him and his family wasn't exactly helping keep him sane, either.

  • @SkyCE9A Denethor was the king in everything but name, but I do not recall if he really knew about Aragorn or not. But if Boromir had lived, then things would have been VERY different. . .

  • @ARP7777777 He knew, and made a point that even if the claim was legitimate, he thought the line of Isildur was no longer worthy of the throne due to their long time in exile and living as rangers. It also did not help that Denethor had a grudge against Aragon, due to the fact Aragorn came to Gondor in the past (under the alias of Thorongil), when Denthor's father was still Steward and Denethor was jealous of the assumed preference his father showed Aragorn.

  • @jamesgravil Because he was shriveled with worry and madness over the false visions Sauron showed him in the Palantir.

  • So the nazgul are banshees riding black pegasus's not ancient lizard things and the orcs are fat bulldog men crossbreeds?

I need to see this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Andyp12 dog-toad crossbread.

  • @Andyp12 absolutely

  • @Andyp12 in all reality this is probably about equally as close to what was intended in the books as peter jacksons movies.

  • @utubebgay Thats true. But the desciptions of the nameless creatures the Nazgul rode give an impression of being giant featherless birds more than anything else.

  • @Andyp12 I don't recall the books saying the nazgul flew on lizard things, and the orcs here are clearly a corruption of the way the elves are drawn in the same movie - which reflects their history in LOTR lore.

  • @WalterLiddy It is probably more my intepretation of them but im sure there were more than a few passages across both Lord of the Rings and possibly some of the other books that describe them as being a type of leathery bird or lizard type creature.

However I do like that this animation contained most of Tolkeins original dialogue.

  • @Andyp12 No, you are right, they were described as birdlike creatures.

  • @Andyp12 Right you are.

  • @Andyp12 They were actually winged beasts, sort of like pterodactlyls.

  • @Andyp12 It is the 1979 Rankin-Bass TV movie. Done by the same company that did Flight of Dragons, the 1977 TV movie The Hobbit, and the Last Unicorn movie, along with a huge amount of others I cannot think of at the moment.

  • @ARP7777777 1980.

  • @Andyp12 They're actually manbearpigs. Half man, half bear, and half pig. They leave pig like droppings except they are more manbear like.

  • @watchmyshoes22 how can a whole be three halves? Surely you mean just a third of each? ;)

  • @watchmyshoes22

3 halves? Your math is bad.

  • @Andyp12 They are Semi-Sapient Bulldogs indeed :D

  • He read it wrong, didn't he? It was a fleet on THEIR side, not on the side of Sauron.

  • @NaiTaiDai no the fleets were corsairs of Umbar-the evil men, corrupted llong ago by melkor and sauron, but Aragorn has killed them with Army of dead and saved Minas Tirith

  • and oh yeah....flying horses for the Nazgul?? and bony faces?? did anyone bother to read the damn books, or did they just get high and start drawing shit? pfffftt...

  • The gandalf voice actor is not as godd as the one in the animated fellowship of the ring

  • They Mispronounce Minus Tirith. my brother joke is they should be calledPlus Tirith,Arwen Odd star, and Leg-o-loss.

  • to MINUS TIRTH

  • I'll agree that Gandalf's narration & the verbatum book dialogue make this version very good, but I can't believe you're actually making a case that this is a better adaptation of the book than Jackson's. Sure, Jackson did alter some things, but all book-movies do that. Perhaps we can agree to say: this version would have been the better one, if only it had been twice the length & not cut out several major characters.

  • I prefer the nazgul's with their hoods up. Plus where's the witch king of angmar?

  • where is shadowfax?

  • Pippin's voice is disgusting!

  • The narration is wonderful.

  • ehere does it say in the book, that the flying beasts of the nazgul were reptilian?

  • theoden looks like captain on titanic... hahahaha whos played by the same actor as in the new LOTR movies!! HAHAHAHAHA FUNNY

  • Did Pippin really ask what is a Palantir when the whole reason he's there in the first place is because he looked into one?

  • wow, the orcs look like fictional fat cats, the nazgul are on flying...horses, the witch-king is a headless "Starscream", Gollum looks like a fucking ugly toad, and almost EVERY name is mispronounced... did i miss anything else???

  • @AMNlinkinparkfan115 The ugly toad version of Gollum is actually pretty accurate to the book (Especially the Hobbit.). Movie changed Gollum around quite a bit.

  • As bad as I always thought Peter Jackson's orcs were... Like everything about the animated movies, this makes me LOVE PJ's version!

  • 3:36

The palantir is actually a giant olive

  • thank God we have Jackson

  • love the orces, well funny

  • Lol how so little dramatic haha

    -"You must stop'im! -

    - His word is law -

    - I'll find Gandalf -

  • Th imagery and color of this film is great. Except for the nazgul mounts and Denethor and stuff like that. The pronunciation of the names is awful though. It's S-ow-ron, not Sore-on. And it's "Meenas" Tirith, not My-nas Tirith.

  • This narration is about as exciting as a history book. xD

  • lol pippin is like some 21st century teenager

  • Omg, the hands are always so perfectly drawn.

  • LMAO Denethor looks like an evil verson of Whitey from 8 Crazy Nights!!!!!

  • @MythicDude

and looks nothing like john noble who's portrayal of the character is better compared to this.

  • this is my favourite part in the cartoon, other than Eowyn slaying the Witch-King.

  • If this film gets any more credit over the Jackson ones, its that it had more faithful moments in regards to the dialog of the ROTK novel. Presentation wise though, I prefer the live action ones any day of the week.

  • It's just really well written, tight, expressive and beautiful dialogue, the type of dialogue which made Tolkien's characters so fuckin' epic, amazing and REAL. It's unfortunate that PJ decided to cut this.

  • @Ccomaffayod If he put all the dialogue in then he would have had to cut out many of the great action sequences. Which one would you rather have?

  • @ZillaRocks He could have easily included both in the extended editions.

  • @Ccomaffayod Not really. He was focusing on Gandalf and Pippin trying to save Faramir, not extensive dialogue

  • @Ccomaffayod word.

  • @Ccomaffayod Well, let's not go crazy. I'm pretty sure "He's gone loony, I tell you!" wasn't written by Tolkien.

  • @WalterLiddy Well, clearly, yes... It's not 100% Tolkien dialogue, obviously. haha

  • "Didst thou think the eyes of the White Tower were blind??"

"... Against the Dark Power that now rises there is no victory! To this dying city only the first fingers of His hand have yet been stretched! All... the East... is moving, and even now, the wind of thy hope cheats thee, and wafts up an enemy fleet with black sails. Up the River Anduin they come, even now! The river which leads to the edge of the Pelennor Fields!"

    A W E S O M E ! ! !

  • I agree. While I did enjoy John Noble's depiction of Denethor, the Rankin Bass version was more faithful to his speech, which was just amazing. It would've completed John Noble's depiction if they had only included the speech concerning the Black Ships and calling Gandalf "Grey Fool," etc. Little details DO count to those of us to whom this story is a large part of our hearts!

  • Pippin a most valuable assistant? In the book and in Jackson's movie Gandalf considered him more of a pest than any assistant.

  • Denother is the bomb

  • lmao the nazgul are riding pegasus's and the mumakil are fuckin mammoths..wtf

  • My thoughts exactly. That's fucked up. The Nazgul were supposed to be riding reptilian creatures, not My Pretty Ponies.

  • Gandalf sounds like Spock.

  • marz gurl should so reveiw this.

  • This scene has an inaccuracy. Denethor's palantir is in a secret room high in the tower & is never seen up close in the story.

  • Also, Denethor isn't seen burning.

  • Actually, he reveals the Palantir to Gandalf. And yes, Gandalf, Beregrond, and Pippen all see Denethor burn.

  • John Noble's Denethor in Jackson's ROTK movie didn't have palantir with him as this cartoon Denethor did. Noble also didn't say the words: "I know more than thou knowest. Gray fool!" as he should've.

  • Single lines are insignificant as long as they have the same genral meaning.

  • What do you mean by your comment. As far as I know Gandalf did find Pippin as a bit of an annoyance.

  • Does it really matter EXACTLY what Denethor or anyone else says, as long as the quotes convey the same mood & meaning?

  • Perhaps not. But I am a purist by heart and think those words that Denethor said in the book and in the cartoon should've been wrtten in the script in PJ's movie. I thought Denethor's gloomy words of despair were very cool.

  • @xtremespeed128 i'm guessing youre not big on poetry

  • Rankin-Bass' Denethor was a more accurate and better adaptation than PJ's Denethor. I know alot of you will take issue with my comment.

  • Beg pardon. Denethor said the words: "I have seen more than thou knowest, gray fool!" in clip 3:40.

  • It was only seen up close when Denethor held it in his hands in the tombs of the stewards.

  • I love the irony of Gandalf having to explain the palantir to Pippin. Still exposition is needed.

  • Why do the orcs all look like Spike from the Tom and Jerry cartoons?

  • You seriously missed the point of the scene. Some of the dialogue may have been taken from the book, but this scene was never, as it appears here, in the book. Faramir isn't even present and this just speeds through it way too fast. i mean, this is both the first and last time we see denether in any major role.

  • theoden mispronousce minas tirith... the "i" in "minas" is like "mississipi" not like "side"... is that right??

  • wow..this is actually very scary..

really want to see the entire version of this.

it is a lot like P J's version...

    But I like P J's version better..

But this is so awesome still!

  • this part should've been included in the movie, and excluded that Arwen romance crap

  • "He's gone loony I tell you!" haha that is too funny!

  • too true too true

  • So many Scooby Doo voices (Not Gandalf of course)

  • funny that gondorians look same as people of rohan

  • Also the "West has Failed" speech is just awesome

  • Jackson's Denethor is absurd w/out the Palantir

  • Jackson's Denethor is absurd period.

  • I like the nasgul with drakes much more way more hardcore

  • draw... and movement reminds me of the last unicorn movie....drawed by the same artists? does anyone know?

  • Yep, same artists, they also did The Hobbit, and Flight of Dragons. :)

  • Did they make this movie in place of Bakshi?

I don't know the full story, but to my understanding Bakshi only made Fellowship and Two Towers.

  • Officially, no. They made it as a sequel to their Hobbit movie, however, I'm sure they decided to skip Fellowship and Two Towers, because Bakshi's adaptation of those had come out recently. It's really two bad because this way it feels like we have two incompleted cartoon series.

  • "It's really two bad because this way it feels like we have two incompleted cartoon series."

Yeah, that's totally how I feel.

  • Anyone know why the Gondorian infantry is fighting OUTSIDE the walls? In the bok they fought there a little, but this is ridiculous! It's still great animation. Not as weird as Bakshi's.

  • From what I remember in the book most of the fighting did take place outside the walls.

  • Well in the book they sent a force to attack in Osgiliath and did try to fight in the Pellenor. But I mean when the enemy came up to the walls it wouldn't make any sense to fight outside them when they heavily outnumber you and have all those trolls and mumakil.

  • Hmm, this is true. I guess though that the artist may have been like, "hmm... no" :P

  • Yep. On another way of thinking it shows how cool the Gondorians are not worrying about anything and fighting outside the walls.

  • "What about the women and children?"

    "Ah, they're fine..."

    Kidding...

Either way though, I'm really glad they have so much stuff based from the books. Anything from Tolkien is a major plus.

  • Well I think PJ nailed it even more and anything he added on worked. But I grew up watching the Rankin/Bass movies and I loved them then and still do. Bakshi's was okay, but the animation made some of the characters look pretty flawed. Still at least it included Legolas and Gimli. Seeing the elves in these movies though it's probably a good thing we don't have Legolas.

  • I remember the wook elves in The Hobbit movie, you remember the way they looked?

They were like goblin looking things... from Mirkewood. If that is where Legolas came from, imagine what he'd look like in this movie o0

  • Exactly!

  • @balrog13571 lol, gotta agree about the elves, as much as i love the Rankin/Bass version

  • @balrog13571 yes, most of the fighting took place outside the walls in the book, which only makes logical sense anyway, as noone wants the enemy inside their fortress; their last resort. better to keep them away from the walls if possible. the real issue i think most ppl have with this is that in the book it doesnt necessarily go into great detail about the battles, bc they are so huge and epic it would take too long.
