@catman5169 Thats not a whine. Its laughing at you!
should have gotten a lawnmower tank and connect it to the fuel pump. Then it would have ran for 20 minutes. A Big Block mopar doesnt like just a drink. It wants a gulp and a half.
@TheStrawberryFeilds my dads 440 with super high compression...needs aviation plane fuel (1/2 tank) then 1/2 a tank of 91 octain and a octain boost to top it off to it not to ping....gets 20 to 23.
never pore gas or hold the can over the engine while cranking ive seen cars backfire thru the carb and shoot a nice size flame more than once... great find good luck :)
why the hell are you pooring all that gas into the carb when its already running?! you are flooding the engine and most of that gas is just getting wasted or else dripping down into the oil pan... if you knew how a carb worked better you wouldnt think that was such a good idea. carbs turn all fuel into a fine mist. raw fuel never goes into an engine. and should never go into one... and it sure doesnt just dump from the carb right down into the intake...!!!
That reminds me of the time I decided to start my old '75 Dodge Monaco after it sat for 3 years. I ended up having to replace the fuel pump, but nothing else was a problem at all. It had a 318 (small block), and ran like a daily driver, got 21 mpg (highway), and the A/C still worked. If it would've had a 400, or 440, I'd probably still have the car.
I think the 383 is the best big block Chrysler ever built, though I think they wasted a lot of iron with the construction of the 361, and 383.
Man, This is nostalgia central of when I picked up my first mopar, 66' Polara 383, I drove it home for 600 bucks with a hose in a can of gas in the passenger seat... God I miss that beast.
some of those older mopars can be cold natured but, so ya need a new fuel pump and maybe need to put on new hoses and belts, but who cares? $500? sounds like money well spent for someone who likes mopar products.. i am trying to get my hands on a 1965 dodge dart myself, it comes with an engine for me to put into it. if all goes well, i will have me a restoration project in my back yard in a few months. i may be addicted to mopar products, LOL.
@bjbuschman2 I once put a 440 together and wired the plugs 180% backwards to the distrib when i was a kiddo and it shot a foot of flames through the carb while idling (horribly) and survived with flying colors after I sprayed the carbon out of the butterflies.... Have you ever worked on an old car? lol. Old mopars are pretty damned bulletproof.
@Manitoum oh yeh.I have worked on many of them.I am a mopar fanantic from a long time ago.I had a 1966 belvedere 383 4 barrel.rebuilt it my self.and must say there was alot blood sweat & tears but i miss that car.did not know what i had at the time so i am sorry for my first comment.Im with you on this one.
Not poring enough gas in the carb thats a big ol motor that needs more gas then those two drops at least fill the bowl on the carb so it well run for atleas 20 sec
@ford1979truck It's either not enough or too much with this guy. Didn't fill the float bowl to begin with but he keeps dumping raw gas straight down the carb after it is already running! The engine is running fine so what does he do? He keeps pooring gas into the carb and bogging down the engine. My guess is this guy has no understanding of how an internal combustion engine works?
I have a ford 600 v8 it a 1953-1964 i forgot the year stock and all it sat for about 28 years and i want to get it going whut do i need to do to get her ruining it has been siting out side in montana weather and i need some advice on how to get it going the engine seems fine it just got parked becuase the use of haling hay was over so it was parked when it was still good
I grew up driving a 68 and 67 newport. Both had the very same body style unlike the 66 which looks like this one, not sure if they changed mid year or if the US and Canada changed on different years but I have seen 67's with either body styles. The 383 is my favorite Chrysler engine, the sound of that short stroke screaming makes goose bumps on the back of my neck.
i have a 1971 mach 1 with 25k original miles on it hasnt been started since 1986 and it has one owner everything is corroded so i put in some motor flush and very thin oil so hopefully it will start this sunday
and its a manuel tranny so hopefully it doesnt drive off

how to start a car thats been sitting for a long time? I wanted to get a 1986 monte carlo supersport thats been sitting for 7 years. How do I go about doing this? I cant take it home as its not mine yet but is there anything I can do to make it run even for a few minutes? while its at the owners house?
if I do get it running and buy the car, once I tow it home what should I be changing/doing on it before regularly driving it?
@KHAN1350 take the plugs out and spray some wd40 in all the cylinders. with the plugs out turn the engine over acouple seconds at a time for acouple minutes to get the oil circulating. put the plugs in , prime the carb and see what happens. worked for me several times
awsome

I heard putting in WD40 in all cylinders and letting it sit for 48 hours is the best idea. Marvel Mystery Oil is great to use too!
danielboone72 6 months ago
@danielboone72 letting the WD-40 sitt for 48 never hurts....pretty safe bet actually if u have the time. Either way works.
